Book Synopsis Orbital Debris by : National Research Council
Download or read book Orbital Debris written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-07-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of space flight, the collision hazard in Earth orbit has increased as the number of artificial objects orbiting the Earth has grown. Spacecraft performing communications, navigation, scientific, and other missions now share Earth orbit with spent rocket bodies, nonfunctional spacecraft, fragments from spacecraft breakups, and other debris created as a byproduct of space operations. Orbital Debris examines the methods we can use to characterize orbital debris, estimates the magnitude of the debris population, and assesses the hazard that this population poses to spacecraft. Potential methods to protect spacecraft are explored. The report also takes a close look at the projected future growth in the debris population and evaluates approaches to reducing that growth. Orbital Debris offers clear recommendations for targeted research on the debris population, for methods to improve the protection of spacecraft, on methods to reduce the creation of debris in the future, and much more.
Book Synopsis Engineering Models In High-speed Penetration Mechanics And Their Applications (In 2 Volumes) by : Gabi Ben-dor
Download or read book Engineering Models In High-speed Penetration Mechanics And Their Applications (In 2 Volumes) written by Gabi Ben-dor and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 1116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume, 1100 pages, 38 chapters book is a significantly expanded, revised and updated version of the monograph by the authors published in 2013 (Ben-Dor, G, Dubinsky, A, Elperin, T, 'High Speed Penetration Dynamics: Engineering Models and Methods,' Singapore: World Scientific Publishing Company). The contents increased by 60%, the number of titles in bibliography doubled and reached 1600; and the scope covers a range of new topics related to hypervelocity penetration, along with high-speed impact.Presented material is structured into two parts. The first part includes description and analysis of practically all known engineering models for calculating high-speed penetration of projectiles into concrete, metals, geological shields, adobe, and gelatine. The second part focuses on the use of approximate models for solving conventional and non-standard problems of penetration mechanics including prediction and optimization of protective properties of monolithic and multi-layered shields against high-speed projectiles and space debris; shape optimization of high-speed projectiles penetrating into various media; modelling of penetration and optimal control of penetrators equipped with jet thrusters; and investigation of the efficiency and optimization of segmented projectiles. The book includes comprehensive overviews on basic classes of problems in high-speed penetration mechanics. This is a indispensable reference guide for scientists, engineers, and students specializing in the field of high-speed and hypervelocity penetration mechanics.
Book Synopsis Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures by : Serge Abrate
Download or read book Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures written by Serge Abrate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.
Book Synopsis The Space Environment by : Alan C. Tribble
Download or read book The Space Environment written by Alan C. Tribble and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breakup of the Space Shuttle Columbia as it reentered Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003, reminded the public--and NASA--of the grave risks posed to spacecraft by everything from insulating foam to space debris. Here, Alan Tribble presents a singular, up-to-date account of a wide range of less conspicuous but no less consequential environmental effects that can damage or cause poor performance of orbiting spacecraft. Conveying a wealth of insight into the nature of the space environment and how spacecraft interact with it, he covers design modifications aimed at eliminating or reducing such environmental effects as solar absorptance increases caused by self-contamination, materials erosion by atomic oxygen, electrical discharges due to spacecraft charging, degradation of electrical circuits by radiation, and bombardment by micrometeorites. This book is unique in that it bridges the gap between studies of the space environment as performed by space physicists and spacecraft design engineering as practiced by aerospace engineers.

Download or read book Bird Strike written by Reza Hedayati and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bird strikes are one of the most dangerous threats to civil and military flight safety: between 1960 and 2014, they were responsible for the destruction of approximately 150 civil aircraft and the deaths of 271 people. Bird Strike presents a summary of the damage imposed on the aviation industries by their avian counterparts. This book first presents and analyzes the statistics obtained from bird strike databases and offers various methods for minimizing the overall probability of bird-strike events. The next chapters explore how to analyze the ability of aero-engine critical structures to withstand bird-strike events by implementing reliable experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods. Finally, the book investigates the impact of bird strikes on different components of aircrafts, such as the metal fuselage, composite fuselage, engines, wings, and tail, and proposes two new bird models, with explanations of their use. - Provides up-to-date information for aviation staff and researchers working on aircraft safety - Offers comprehensive investigations on all the statistical, theoretical, experimental, and numerical aspects of bird strike - Includes studies carried out on bird strike and provides the reader with the important findings of each paper
