Book Synopsis Resolving Structural Conflicts by : Richard E. Rubenstein
Download or read book Resolving Structural Conflicts written by Richard E. Rubenstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how certain types of social systems generate violent conflict and discusses how these systems can be transformed in order to create the conditions for positive peace. Resolving Structural Conflicts addresses a key issue in the field of conflict studies: what to do about violent conflicts that are not the results of misunderstanding, prejudice, or malice, but the products of a social system that generates violent conflict as part of its normal operations. This question poses enormous challenges to those interested in conflict resolution, since the solution to this problem involves restructuring social, political, and cultural systems rather than just calling in a mediator to help people arrive at an agreement. This study breaks new ground in showing how local conflicts involving crime, police, and prisons; transnational conflicts involving religious terrorism by groups like ISIS; and international conflicts involving Great Power clashes are all produced in large part by elite-driven, exploitative or oppressive social structures. It also presents new ideas about the implications of this ‘structural turn’ for the practice of conflict resolution, emphasizing the need for conflict resolvers to embrace a new politics and to broaden their methods far beyond traditional forms of facilitation. Written by a leading scholar, this book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, peace studies, war and conflict studies, sociology, political science and international relations in general.

Book Synopsis The Structure of Conflict by : Clyde H. Coombs
Download or read book The Structure of Conflict written by Clyde H. Coombs and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory that attempts to bring order to the chaotic variety of conflict usually begins by distinguishing types of conflict and formulating general explanatory principles that relate and integrate them. In contrast to traditional methods, this book describes and explores the structural aspects of different types of conflicts, and discusses the important implications involved for both choosing and achieving methods for resolving conflict. Two important facets of conflict structure are recognized: the individuals involved and the behavioral principles that govern them; and the existence of options and their structural relation. This monograph will be of interest to researchers and practitioners of conflict resolution, such as mediators, lawyers, diplomats, counselors and psychologists, and students in experimental and social psychology, labor relations, poilitical science and law.
Book Synopsis Structural Idealism by : Douglas Mann
Download or read book Structural Idealism written by Douglas Mann and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we determine our actions, or are our actions ruled by the structure of our society? Does our culture create us, or do we create our culture? Within history and social theory there is a fundamental division of opinion between those who explain human action by considering the intentions, reasons and motives of individuals and those who use broader social structures. Structural Idealism presents a theory of social and historical explanation which argues that “idealists” such as Hegel, who champion human agency, and “materialists” such as Marx, who support social structure, have grasped but part of a larger truth. The book contends that we have to explain human actions simultaneously by both the ideas human actors bring to a situation and the way in which previous actions have created social structures that condition those ideas. Through this realization we can see how all forms of knowledge, from the historical roots of modern philosophy to today’s popular culture, both condition and are conditioned by structural ideals. This book challenges our perception of how cultures and ideals are formed, and shows that while structural ideals allow people to co-operate as they work toward goals — their own or those of their community — these images of perfection, so easily accepted as the unalterable structure of our society, can be changed, and are changed, by individuals. Structural Idealism asks us to think beneath the surface of our society, and will be of special interest to philosophers, sociologists, historians and cultural theorists.
Book Synopsis Structural Lie by : Charles C. Lemert
Download or read book Structural Lie written by Charles C. Lemert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structural Lie tackles one of social science's most mysterious problems. How is it possible to derive statements about the grand structures of social life from their effects in the small movements of everyday life? Prominent sociologist Charles Lemert shows how Marx and Freud provide some answers to this question. Marx derived from the commodity his picture of the capitalist system, Freud diagnosed the character of psyches from the details of dreams, slips and jokes. This wonderfully readable and engaging book lays the foundation for a new social science in an age where a microchip can convey a world of information.
Book Synopsis Structural Prevention of Ethnic Violence by : C. Scherrer
Download or read book Structural Prevention of Ethnic Violence written by C. Scherrer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-07-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, ethnic violence accounts for the majority of the world's conflicts. The question is how ethnic difference is to be recognized. The task is to pre-empt destructive forms of interaction between states and peoples. Autonomy arrangements have, since the 1920s, helped to resolve ethno-national conflicts in Europe. Measures include cultural independence and political representation. Outside Europe, the demand for self-governance led to a deepening of the classic form of minority protection. Federalization, decentralization, and territorial self-governance are proven means of averting conflict. Conflict prevention means a turning-away from the cultural monopolism of nation-states.

Book Synopsis Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS by : Barbara M. Byrne
Download or read book Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS written by Barbara M. Byrne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses. Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by: a statement of the hypothesis being tested; a schematic representation of the model under study; the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus; a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files; a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; and the published reference from which each application was drawn.

Book Synopsis Ethnicity and Intra-State Conflict by : Håkan Wiberg
Download or read book Ethnicity and Intra-State Conflict written by Håkan Wiberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text examines domestic wars, looking at inter-state relations only in as far as they are directly relevant to understand such wars. The book aims to indicate how intra-state war differs from the inter-state war, and focuses primarily on such domestic armed conflicts that at least have significant ethnonational components. The book assesses how heterogeneous a category "ethnic conflict" is in terms of causes and consequences, and gauges the complex interplay between class, regionalism and ethnicity. It is not limited to description and causal analysis, but also attempts to assess suggestions as to what types of actors may contribute in what ways to avoiding ethnonational mobilization/polarization, avoiding militarization of manifest conflicts, and de-escalating militarized conflicts by looking for tenable generalizations on what types of approaches are fruitful in bringing about de-escalation, ceasefires, political compromises, peaceful division or peaceful integration, reconciliation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert K. Merton is unarguably one of the most influential sociologists of his time. A figure whose wide-ranging theoretical and methodological contributions have become fundamental to the field, Merton is best known for introducing such concepts and procedures as unanticipated consequences, self-fulfilling prophecies, focused group interviews, middle-range theory, opportunity structure, and analytic paradigms. This definitive compilation encompasses the breadth and brilliance of his works, from the earliest to the most recent. Merton's foundational writings on social structure and process, on the sociology of science and knowledge, and on the discipline and trajectory of sociology itself are all powerfully represented, as are his autobiographical insights in a fascinating coda. Anchored by Piotr Sztompka's contextualizing introduction, Merton's vast oeuvre emerges as a dynamic and profoundly coherent system of thought, a constant source of vitality and renewal for present and future sociology.
