Download or read book Ii-Vi Semiconductor Blue/Green Light Emitters written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1997-03-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides one of the first comprehensive reviews combining recent breakthroughs in blue/green semiconductor lasers based on II-VI materials and fundamentally important issues about the development and extension of these lasers to commercial applications. These lasers are on the cutting-edge of technology and could revolutionize areas such as optical information storage and color displays in the next few years. An important focus of this book is on the recent laboratory development of an entirely new class of diode lasers, based on a different family of semiconductor materials, which emit at much shorter wavelengths in the green and blue portion of the spectrum. These new and exciting developments in optoelectronics, which are still undergoing laboratory testing, have the potential of providing a major increase in storage capacity over current CD technology.Besides applications in high-density digital optical storage, other possible aplications for the compact blue-green lasers will be in areas ranging from flat panel displays to multicolor printing to medical diagnostics. - Details practical issues of the growth of laser structures by molecular beam epitaxy by pioneers in the industry - Explains how the barriers of doping and electrical contact were overcome by using wide bandgap II-VI semiconductors - Documents thirty years of research

Book Synopsis Semiconducting Chalcogenide Glass II by : Robert Fairman
Download or read book Semiconducting Chalcogenide Glass II written by Robert Fairman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chalcogenide glass is made up of many elements from the Chalcogenide group. The glass is transparent to infrared light and is useful as a semiconductor in many electronic devices. For example, chalcogenide glass fibers are a component of devices used to perform laser surgery. The properties of chalcogenide glass result not only from their chemical composition and atomic structure, but also from the impact of numerous external factors. A comprehensive survey is presented of the properties of chalcogenide glass under various external impacts. Practical recommendations are presented for a wide range of applications. Part II is the second part of a three-volume work within the Semiconductors and Semimetals series.* The first collective monograph written by Eastern European scientists on the electrical and optical properties of chalcogenide vitreous semiconductors (CVS).* Contributions by B.G. Kolomiets, who discovered the properties of chalcogenide glass in 1955!* Provides objective evidence and discussion by authors from opposing positions.

Book Synopsis Properties of Aluminium Gallium Arsenide by : Sadao Adachi
Download or read book Properties of Aluminium Gallium Arsenide written by Sadao Adachi and published by IET. This book was released on 1993 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alloy system A1GaAs/GaAs is potentially of great importance for many high-speed electronics and optoelectronic devices, because the lattice parameter difference GaAs and A1GaAs is very small, which promises an insignificant concentration of undesirable interface states. Thanks to this prominent feature, a number of interesting properties and phenomena, such as high-mobility low-dimensional carrier gases, resonant tunnelling and fractional quantum Hall effect, have been found in the A1GaAs/GaAs heterostructure system. New devices, such as modulation-doped FETs, heterojunction bipolar transistors, resonant tunnelling transistors, quantum-well lasers, and other photonic and quantum-effect devices, have also been developed recently using this material system. These areas are recognized as not being the most interesting and active fields in semiconductor physics and device engineering.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Winter School on "Heterostructures and Two-Dimensional Electronic Systems in Semiconductors". The school took place in Mauterndorf, Austria, from February 26 - March 2, 1984, and was the third one in a series of winter schools on "New Develop ments in Solid-State Physics", organized by the Austrian Physical Society, Solid State Physics Division. The school was attended by about 150 scientists from 12 countries, including the United States of America, Japan and Poland. Most of the research groups of Western Europe working in this field participated and demonstrated the still increasing interest in the topics. These topics cover the wide area ranging from fundamental phenomena in solid-state physics, like the quantum Hall effect, to new semiconductor devices, all based on two-dimensional elec tronic systems. We hope that the spirit of this school, the combination of basic and applied physics (including skiing) will stimulate further progress in this field of research. This conference was sponsored by the Austrian Physical Society, Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research, European Research Office of the US Army, European Office of Aerospace Research and Development, Federal Province of Salzburg, and Osterreichische Forschungsgemeinschaft Further financial support came from the following companies: Balzers, IBM Austria, Messer-Griesheim, Oxford Instruments, Klaus Schafer & Co., Siemens Osterreich and Varian.

Book Synopsis Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides by : Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D
Download or read book Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides written by Xingcun Colin Tong Ph.D and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.

Download or read book Wide Gap II-VI Semiconductors, Proceedings of the E-MRS Advanced Research Workshop, Montpellier, 16-18 January 1991 written by R. Triboulet and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-09 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide Gap II-VI Semiconductors presents the proceedings of the E-MRS Advanced Research Workshop which was held at Montpellier between 16-18 January 1991. These proceedings will stimulate ideas and interest for the future development of the wide bandgap II-VI compounds and major new device applications. To this end, contributions from some 70 scientists (mainly from France, Germany and the UK, but also, and most importantly, a few leading USA and Japanese researchers) discuss and examine the potential of the II-VIs, especially ZnSe and related materials, as blue light emitters and laser diodes. The current status of the role of these materials is the subject of considerable interest and is featured in two lively round table discussion papers: 'Doping in II-VIs' and 'Practical devices for blue emission'. In the face of major research programmes on II-VI compounds in the USA and Japan, this volume explores European research and new initiatives in this field. Wide Gap II-VI Semiconductors is an essential record of the present state of research and of the factors governing the future. The papers presented here are reprinted from Semiconductor Science and Technology (1991, Volume 6, Number 9a), an Institute of Physics journal.
