This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From within complex structures of organisms and cells down to the molecular level, biological processes all involve movement. Muscular fibers slide on each other to activate the muscle, as polymerases do along nucleic acids for replicating and transcribing the genetic material. Cells move and organize themselves into organs by recognizing each other through macromolecular surface-specific interactions. These recognition processes involve the mu tual adaptation of structures that rely on their flexibility. All sorts of conformational changes occur in proteins involved in through-membrane signal transmission, showing another aspect of the flexibility of these macromolecules. The movement and flexibility are inscribed in the polymeric nature of essential biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. For instance, the well-defined structures formed by the long protein chain are held together by weak noncovalent interac tions that design a complex potential well in which the protein floats, permanently fluctuating between several micro- or macroconformations in a wide range of frequencies and ampli tudes. The inherent mobility of biomolecular edifices may be crucial to the adaptation of their structures to particular functions. Progress in methods for investigating macromolecular structures and dynamics make this hypothesis not only attractive but more and more testable.

Book Synopsis Protein-protein Complexes by : Martin Zacharias
Download or read book Protein-protein Complexes written by Martin Zacharias and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the immense progress achieved in elucidating protein-protein complex structures and in the field of protein interaction modeling, there is great demand for a book that gives interested researchers/students a comprehensive overview of the field. This book does just that. It focuses on what can be learned about protein-protein interactions from the analysis of protein-protein complex structures and interfaces. What are the driving forces for protein-protein association? How can we extract the mechanism of specific recognition from studying protein-protein interfaces? How can this knowledge be used to predict and design protein-protein interactions (interaction regions and complex structures)? What methods are currently employed to design protein-protein interactions, and how can we influence protein-protein interactions by mutagenesis and small-molecule drugs or peptide mimetics? The book consists of about 15 review chapters, written by experts, on the characterization of protein-protein interfaces, structure determination of protein complexes (by NMR and X-ray), theory of protein-protein binding, dynamics of protein interfaces, bioinformatics methods to predict interaction regions, and prediction of protein-protein complex structures (docking and homology modeling of complexes, etc.) and design of protein-protein interactions. It serves as a bridge between studying/analyzing protein-protein complex structures (interfaces), predicting interactions, and influencing/designing interactions.

Book Synopsis Advanced Technologies for Protein Complex Production and Characterization by : M. Cristina Vega
Download or read book Advanced Technologies for Protein Complex Production and Characterization written by M. Cristina Vega and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This edited volume discusses the identification, discovery, characterization, structure determination and modeling of multicomponent macromolecular complexes, and as such, it fully complements the first volume (ISBN 978-3-319-27214-6), which targeted methods of recombinant production of protein complexes. This book is divided in 8 sections offering a selection of technologies widely used in the characterization of protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes for different purposes and at different scales. From native electrophoresis methods, that are accessible to any reasonably well-equipped laboratory, to the sophisticated setup required for structure determination by cryo-electron microscopy or X-ray crystallography, this book contains a wide variety of clearly explained analytic and preparative approaches, connected with the production techniques developed on the previous volume. The readers will find an integral connection between this book and the first volume, which ensures a comprehensive and updated discussion of the main topics of the discipline. Taken together, these volumes constitute a cohesive and authoritative source of the research on multicomponent macromolecular complexes. In here, we focus on characterization of protein complexes in the broadest sense, which is not typically covered in other sources. Moreover, all chapters are carefully written by world renowned scientists and active researchers, making this volume ideal, not only as a reference source, but also as a companion book for the daily laboratory work. This book is aimed for a wide range of scientists, from science students to experienced researchers, working on protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes, who need a thorough understanding of protein production and complex characterization.
Book Synopsis Computer Assisted Modeling by : National Research Council
Download or read book Computer Assisted Modeling written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1987-02-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of biology, the search for understanding the relation between structure and function is now taking place at the macromolecular level. Proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides are macromolecule--polymers formed from families of simpler subunits. Because of their size and complexity, the polymers are capable of both inter- and intramolecular interactions. These interactions confer upon the polymers distinctive three-dimensional shapes. These tertiary configurations, in turn, determine the function of the macromolecule. Computers have become so inextricably involved in empirical studies of three-dimensional macromolecular structure that mathematical modeling, or theory, and experimental approaches are interrelated aspects of a single enterprise.
