Book excerpt: Like some other Native teens on Montana reservations, Rhonda Runningcrane attempted suicide. To her, life seemed bleak and pointless. But when she learns that donations are needed to support a large protest against an oil company running a pipeline through sacred Native land, something inside her clicks. Unlike her friends, Rhonda is inspired to join the fight, even though she knows it could be dangerous. Using skills she learned from her uncle, Rhonda becomes part of the crew that keeps the protesters' camp running. With inspiration from a wise Native elder, the teen commits herself to an important cause, dedicating her life to protecting the sacred waters of Mother Earth. Book excerpt: Suicide prevention initiatives are part of much broader systems connected to activities such as the diagnosis of mental illness, the recognition of clinical risk, improving access to care, and coordinating with a broad range of outside agencies and entities around both prevention and public health efforts. Yet suicide is also an intensely personal issue that continues to be surrounded by stigma. On September 11-12, 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in Washington, DC, to discuss preventing suicide among people with serious mental illness. The workshop was designed to illustrate and discuss what is known, what is currently being done, and what needs to be done to identify and reduce suicide risk. Improving Care to Prevent Suicide Among People with Serious Mental Illness summarizes presentations and discussions of the workshop.

Book excerpt: As the national war on drugs continues, children and youth are told to "just say no" but are seldom given the information and skills to sort out the mixed signals coming from peers, adults, and the mass media. This guidebook presents examples of three approaches to community "storytelling" projects through which children and youth can explore conflicting information and feelings about the use of drugs and alcohol. These examples are drawn from projects in rural, American Indian, and Alaska Native communities. Participatory research is a process in which the people affected by an issue or problem develop the information to support action. They learn new skills, undertake the necessary research, and come to their own conclusions. Activities for applying participatory research to substance abuse study include brainstorming, researching drug effects, simple surveys, community surveys, and developing a local resource guide. Cultural journalism can contribute to understanding by looking for both the roots and the cure of substance abuse within personal and collective histories. Activities include private reflection, group discussion, oral history interviews, and shaping the story in written form. Experiential writing activities encourage students to express their own experiences and must take place in a safety zone that guards confidentiality and supports the generation of ideas. This booklet contains 77 references and additional resources. (SV)

Book excerpt: A powerful presentation of the impact of colonization of American Indian tribes on the safety of Native American women and the changes to address such violence under the Violence Against Women Act. This essential reading reviews through the voices and experiences of Native women the systemic reforms under the Act to remove barriers to justice and their safety. It places the historic changes witnessed over the last twenty years under the Act in the context of the tribal grassroots movement for safety of Native women. Legal practitioners, students and social justice advocates will find this book a powerful and inspirational resource to creating a more just, humane, and safer world.
