Book Synopsis Critical Infrastructure by : Robert Radvanovsky
Download or read book Critical Infrastructure written by Robert Radvanovsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Infrastructure: Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Fifth Edition represents a continuation of research and recommendations from the past editions that spans nearly twenty years of focusing on critical infrastructure (CI) protection. Over that time, the operating, threat, and technical environments have changed drastically. The doctrines that have guided practitioners across various domains have also evolved due to changing demands. This is a natural result when doctrines collide and gradually evolve toward, and coalesce into, a singular understanding of an issue. Those who have practiced in this domain have seen these collisions in the past - an example being the convergence of physical security and cyber information and operational) technologies security. It is with this backdrop and understanding of the domain that the authors not only describe the current state of affairs, but also provide a means through which researchers and participants - such as practitioners, students, industry stakeholders, owners, and operators in various government and private CI sectors - can look at trends and changes the in the domain that may not be apparent elsewhere. The authors identify shifts in today’s environment that move the thinking away from simply the robustness of systems to their adaptability and resilience. They outline design processes that, likewise, are evolving away from the simple adoption of best practices to risk-based management and even towards structures based on engineering-driven principles. These changes are not occurring at a unified pace and the differences can result in tensions between certain communities. However, the debate itself is indicative of the critical thinking that is beginning to take hold within each infrastructure domain. Critical Infrastructure, Fifth Edition continues to critically examine the evolving importance of our critical infrastructure to our society - recognizing the underpinning value of cyber technology and how physical infrastructures and delivery models impact and affect people and society.
Book Synopsis Metaphor and Emotion by : Zoltán Kövecses
Download or read book Metaphor and Emotion written by Zoltán Kövecses and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are human emotions best characterized as biological, psychological, or cultural entities? Many researchers claim that emotions arise either from human biology (i.e., biological reductionism) or as products of culture (i.e., social constructionism). This book challenges this simplistic division between the body and culture by showing how human emotions are to a large extent "constructed" from individuals' embodied experiences in different cultural settings. The view proposed here demonstrates how cultural aspects of emotions, metaphorical language about the emotions, and human physiology in emotion are all part of an intergrated system and shows how this system points to the reconciliation of the seemingly contradictory views of biological reductionism and social constructionism in contemporary debates about human emotion.

Book Synopsis Critical Infrastructure by : Robert S. Radvanovsky
Download or read book Critical Infrastructure written by Robert S. Radvanovsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Critical Infrastructure presents a culmination of ongoing research and real-work experience, building upon previous editions. Since the first edition of this work, the domain has seen significant evolutions in terms of operational needs, environmental challenges and threats – both emerging and evolving. This work expands upon the previous works and maintains its focus on those efforts vital to securing the safety and security of populations. The world continues to see a shift from a force-protection model to one more focused on resilience. This process has been exacerbated and challenged as societies face increased instability in weather and arguably climate, a destabilized geopolitical situation, and continuing economic instability. Various levels—ranging from international oversight to individual actions—continue to work towards new approaches and tools that can assist in meeting this challenge. This work keeps pace with the key changes that have occurred since previous editions and continues to provide insight into emerging and potential issues. Expanding from historical research, major areas of interest such as climate change, regulatory oversight, and internal capacity building are explored. This work provides a reference for those that are working to prepare themselves and their organizations for challenges likely to arise over the next decade. In keeping with the fast-changing nature of this field, Critical Infrastructure: Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Fourth Edition has been completely revised and fully updated to reflect this shift in focus and to incorporate the latest developments. Presents an overview of some of the emerging challenges and conflicts between the public and private sector; Continues to build the case for organizations to adopt an intelligence-driven and adaptive approach to protecting infrastructure; Presents a unique and new perspective of re-examining baseline requirements against a range of shifting factors, taking a balanced approach between risk-based planning and consequence management; Expands upon the issue of internal and lone-wolf threats that pose additional challenges to a system that continues to focus largely on external threats; and An enhanced and improved view of interdependencies in an increasingly inter-connected and network-enabled world. Preparing for the challenges of increasingly unstable threat and operating environments will pose challenges at all levels. Those involved in ensuring that critical infrastructure protection and assurance efforts function effectively and efficiently—whether as government regulators, business operators, clients of various infrastructure sectors or those seeking to maintain an accountable system – will find insights into less-explored aspects of this challenging field.
Book Synopsis Customer Relationship Management by : Chaturvedi
Download or read book Customer Relationship Management written by Chaturvedi and published by Excel Books India. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book: Customer Relationship Management CRM was born in the 1990s in the West. In the initial phases, the over enthusiastic businesses invested almost US$ 400 billion. But, the very same businesses were disheartened very soon primarily because there were no * visible. And, there were no quick results mainly because 80 per cent of the investments were made in technology. 'CRM' meant 'technology' to them then; 'CRM' means 'technology' to them even today. However, no business need bother so long as it is ready to go by the 'human' aspect of CRM, and take technology only as a facilitator. This book is an attempt to present this 'human' side of CRM. The authors' belief is that, in the long-term, CRM can be successful only due to its 'human' face. The book is arranged in three Parts. Part I, Customer Relationship Management, contains the academic inputs titled as Customer is King, Customer Managed Relationships MINI-Marketing, Types of CRM, Building Blocks of CRM & CRM Strategies, Customer Relationship Management by Indian Firms, Customer Retention Strategies, HRM in CRM, and Implementing a Technology-based CRM Solution. Part II, Call Centre Management, covers the areas concerning the working of a call centre titled as The Call Centre, Call Centre Functionality, Team Building, Customer Relationship Management, Web-based Customer Support, and Contact Centre Glossary. Part III, Cases, gives a first-hand idea of the working of CRM in the more peculiar contexts, like public sector undertakings through five well documented cases. Contents Part I: Customer Relationship Management, Customer is King, Customer Managed Relationships-Mini-Marketing, Types of CRM, Building Blocks of CRM & CRM Strategy, Customer Relationship Management by Indian Firms, Customer Retention Strategies, HRM in CRM, Implementing a Technology-based CRM Solution, Future Trends in CRM Part II: Call Centre Management, The Call Centre, Call Centre Functionality, Team Building, Customer Relatio
Download or read book Paper Chemistry written by J.C. Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the title of this book is Paper Chemistry, it should be considered as a text about the chemistry of the formation of paper from aqueous suspensions of fibre and other additives, rather than as a book about the chemistry of the raw material itself. It is the subject of what papermakers call wet-end chemistry. There are many other excellent texts on the chemistry of cellulose and, apart from one chapter on the accessibility of cellulose, the subject is not addressed here. Neither does the book deal with the chemistry of pulp preparation (from wood, from other plant sources or from recycled fibres), for there are also many excellent texts on this subject. The formation of paper is a continuous filtration process in which cellulosic fibres are formed into a network which is then pressed and dried. The important chemistry involved in this process is firstly the retention of colloidal material during filtration and secondly the modification of fibre and sheet properties so as to widen the scope for the use of paper and board products. As is the fashion these days, each chapter is written by an internationally recognised expert in the field, and my thanks are extended to all of the contributors. for their hours of patient and unseen research during the preparation of their manuscripts.

Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Awakening by : Julius Evola
Download or read book The Doctrine of Awakening written by Julius Evola and published by Inner Traditions / Bear & Co. This book was released on 1996-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian philosopher Julius Evola pares away centuries of adaptations to reveal Buddhist practice in its original context. Most surprisingly, he argues that the widespread belief in reincarnation is not an original Buddhist tenet. Evola presents actual practices of concentration and visualization, and places them in the larger metaphysical context of the Buddhist model of mind and universe.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Chemistry by : G. Reniers
Download or read book Sustainable Chemistry written by G. Reniers and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the demands of society increase in their quest for safer, better and more convenient products, the chemical industry is faced on the one hand with the possible depletion of natural resources and on the other with a large share of responsibility for the damage that may be caused to the environment and the population by their products. The main area of chemical activity consists of the conversion of various base metals into substances and materials with new chemical and physical properties. A substantial amount of research is being carried out regarding this conversion process, which now must incorporate sustainability requirements. In addition, other associated activities, such as the chemical supply chain, performance measurements and different types of management tasks, must meet sustainability standards. Achieving sustainable chemistry based on clean processing routes, efficient use of resources, renewable materials, adequate management systems and other activities is not only essential for the future of a competitive chemical industry but also for a sustainable and healthy society and environment. Key to sustainable chemistry are innovative and cleaner technologies and the development of appropriate business models, performance measurements, and better integrated management. This book contains papers on the latest academic and industrial research in the field presented at the first international conference convened on the sustainable chemistry.
Download or read book Israeli Identities written by Yair Auron and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of identity is one of present-day Israel’s cardinal and most pressing issues. In a comprehensive examination of the identity issue, this study focuses on attitudes toward the Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora; the Holocaust and its repercussions on identity; attitudes toward the state of Israel and Zionism; and attitudes toward Jewish religion. Israeli Arab students (Israeli Palestinians) and Jewish Israeli students were asked corresponding questions regarding their identity. It was found that, rather than lessening its impact over the years, the Holocaust has become a major factor, at times the paramount factor in Jewish identity. Similarly, among Palestinians the Naqba has become a major factor in Palestinian-Israeli identity. However, the overall results show that the identity of a Jewish citizen of Israel is not purely Israeli, nor is it purely Jewish. It is, to varying degrees, a synthesis of Jewish and Israeli components, depending on the particular sub-groups or sub-identities. The same holds for Israeli-Arabs or Israeli-Palestinians who have neither a purely Israeli identity nor a purely Palestinian (or Arab) one.
Book Synopsis Oxygen: The Key to Stereoelectronic Control in Chemistry by : Igor Alabugin
Download or read book Oxygen: The Key to Stereoelectronic Control in Chemistry written by Igor Alabugin and published by American Chemical Society. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although carbon is considered the central element of organic chemistry, the broader chemical world has one more star player—oxygen. Billions of years of evolution have filled your room with oxygen as countless cyanobacteria and plants work on changing our planet. Oxygen is everywhere—from geology to biology, from the Earth's crust to the ozone layer. This digital primer aims to analyze chemical reactivity through the prism of oxygen chemistry. The key to understanding this chemistry is the lone pairs of oxygen (i.e., the underutilized "idle" electrons that do not directly contribute to the Lewis structure of molecules). By highlighting the many roles of oxygen, we will illustrate how chemistry rises above the limitations of Lewis structures and how electrons stay neither idle nor "lone" even if they are in "lone pairs" when an oxygen atom is near a reaction center. This digital primer will introduce important types of chemical bonding that transcend undergraduate textbooks but that are likely to drive the development of new chemical reactions in the future.
Download or read book Lost and Found written by Paul Florsheim and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past six decades, there have been dramatic changes in the dynamics of family life in the United States. Today, about half of all babies born to mothers under the age of 25 will not live with their fathers for much of their childhood. From the perspective of many social scientists and politicians, this change has wreaked havoc on society by trapping women and children in poverty and loosening the civilizing bond between men and their families. But what is causing the phenomenon? Some place blame at the feet of the young men themselves, together with eroding cultural and family values. Others point to systemic failures in our economy or social support programs. Rather than assign blame, the first goal of Lost and Found is to tell the stories of young men as they struggle (with varying degrees of success) to become fathers. The second goal is to outline a strategy for helping young fathers remain constructively involved with their partners and children. Drawing from their research with over 1,000 young parents in Chicago and Salt Lake City, Paul Florsheim and David Moore focus on a group of about 20 young fathers, whose stories-conveyed in their own words-help the reader make sense of what is happening to fatherhood in America. Having interviewed young fathers and their partners before and after their children were born, these accounts provide a dynamic perspective on the development of young men and their relationships. Young mothers-the partners of these young men-both corroborate and sometimes offer alternative or contradictory perspectives. Oriented to undo stereotypes, the authors introduce the notion of "good-enough" fathering, tempering the tendency to think simply in terms of good or bad fathers. They go on to provide concrete recommendations for strengthening fathers' roles and helping young fathers and mothers create stable home environments for their children, whether the parents are together or not.
