Book Synopsis String Figures as Mathematics? by : Eric Vandendriessche
Download or read book String Figures as Mathematics? written by Eric Vandendriessche and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the mathematical rationality contained in the making of string figures. It does so by using interdisciplinary methods borrowed from anthropology, mathematics, history and philosophy of mathematics. The practice of string figure-making has long been carried out in many societies, and particularly in those of oral tradition. It consists in applying a succession of operations to a string (knotted into a loop), mostly using the fingers and sometimes the feet, the wrists or the mouth. This succession of operations is intended to generate a final figure. The book explores different modes of conceptualization of the practice of string figure-making and analyses various source material through these conceptual tools: it looks at research by mathematicians, as well as ethnographical publications, and personal fieldwork findings in the Chaco, Paraguay, and in the Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea, which all give evidence of the rationality that underlies this activity. It concludes that the creation of string figures may be seen as the result of intellectual processes, involving the elaboration of algorithms, and concepts such as operation, sub-procedure, iteration, and transformation.

He may be fascinated but the feeling was not returned, as his friendly advances were meet with a wall of solid frozen stone, something that was considered very rude in a small southern town. The last thing medically retired FBI profiler Fleming wanted or needed was attention. Any attention. She had fled her former life because she just couldnt stand the whispers and the looks of pity from her friends and co-workers. Like a willing Rapunzul in her tower all Amanda wanted was to be left alone. The hand of Fate had been very cruel to Amanda but she gives as well as takes. Amanda and Martin may hate each other on sight but the heart chooses as it chooses and what you think you want isnt what you need at all.
Book Synopsis Strings, Gauge Fields, and the Geometry Behind by : Anton Rebhan
Download or read book Strings, Gauge Fields, and the Geometry Behind written by Anton Rebhan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains exclusively invited contributions from collaborators of Maximilian Kreuzer, giving accounts of his scientific legacy and original articles from renowned theoretical physicists and mathematicians, including Victor Batyrev, Philip Candelas, Michael Douglas, Alexei Morozov, Joseph Polchinski, Peter van Nieuwenhuizen, and Peter West.Besides a collection of review and research articles from high-profile researchers in string theory and related fields of mathematics (in particular, algebraic geometry) which discuss recent progress in the exploration of string theory vacua and corresponding mathematical developments, this book contains a pedagogical account of the important work of Brandt, Dragon, and Kreuzer on classification of anomalies in gauge theories. This highly cited work, which is also quoted in the textbook of Steven Weinberg on quantum field theory, has not yet been presented in full detail except in private lecture notes by Norbert Dragon.Similarly, the software package PALP (Package for Analyzing Lattice Polytopes with applications to toric geometry), which has been incorporated in the SAGE (Software for Algebra and Geometry Experimentation) project, has not yet been documented in full detail. This book contains a user manual for a new thoroughly revised version of PALP.By including these two very useful original contributions, researchers in quantum field theory, string theory, and mathematics will find added value in a pedagogical presentation of the classification of quantum gauge field anomalies, and the accompanying comprehensive manual and tutorial for the powerful software package PALP.
