Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains exclusively invited contributions from collaborators of Maximilian Kreuzer, giving accounts of his scientific legacy and original articles from renowned theoretical physicists and mathematicians, including Victor Batyrev, Philip Candelas, Michael Douglas, Alexei Morozov, Joseph Polchinski, Peter van Nieuwenhuizen, and Peter West. Besides a collection of review and research articles from high-profile researchers in string theory and related fields of mathematics (in particular, algebraic geometry) which discuss recent progress in the exploration of string theory vacua and corresponding mathematical developments, this book contains a pedagogical account of the important work of Brandt, Dragon, and Kreuzer on classification of anomalies in gauge theories. This highly cited work, which is also quoted in the textbook of Steven Weinberg on quantum field theory, has not yet been presented in full detail except in private lecture notes by Norbert Dragon. Similarly, the software package PALP (Package for Analyzing Lattice Polytopes with applications to toric geometry), which has been incorporated in the SAGE (Software for Algebra and Geometry Experimentation) project, has not yet been documented in full detail. This book contains a user manual for a new thoroughly revised version of PALP. By including these two very useful original contributions, researchers in quantum field theory, string theory, and mathematics will find added value in a pedagogical presentation of the classification of quantum gauge field anomalies, and the accompanying comprehensive manual and tutorial for the powerful software package PALP.

This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces two-dimensional supersymmetric field theories with emphasis on both linear and non-linear sigma models. Complex differential geometry, in connection with supersymmetry, has played a key role in most developments of the last thirty years in quantum field theory and string theory. Both structures introduce a great deal of rigidity compared to the more general categories of non-supersymmetric theories and real differential geometry, allowing for many general conceptual results and detailed quantitative predictions. Two-dimensional (0,2) supersymmetric quantum field theories provide a natural arena for the fruitful interplay between geometry and quantum field theory. These theories play an important role in string theory and provide generalizations, still to be explored fully, of rich structures such as mirror symmetry. They also have applications to non-perturbative four-dimensional physics, for instance as descriptions of surface defects or low energy dynamics of solitonic strings in four-dimensional supersymmetric theories. The purpose of these lecture notes is to acquaint the reader with these fascinating theories, assuming a background in conformal theory, quantum field theory and differential geometry at the beginning graduate level. In order to investigate the profound relations between structures from complex geometry and field theory the text begins with a thorough examination of the basic structures of (0,2) quantum field theory and conformal field theory. Next, a simple class of Lagrangian theories, the (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models, are discussed, together with the resulting renormalization group flows, dynamics, and symmetries. After a thorough introduction and examination of (0,2) non-linear sigma models, the text introduces linear sigma models that, in particular, provide a unified treatment of non-linear sigma models and Landau-Ginzburg theories. Many exercises, along with discussions of relevant mathematical notions and important open problems in the field, are included in the text.

Book excerpt: The juxtaposition of 'machine learning' and 'pure mathematics and theoretical physics' may first appear as contradictory in terms. The rigours of proofs and derivations in the latter seem to reside in a different world from the randomness of data and statistics in the former. Yet, an often under-appreciated component of mathematical discovery, typically not presented in a final draft, is experimentation: both with ideas and with mathematical data. Think of the teenage Gauss, who conjectured the Prime Number Theorem by plotting the prime-counting function, many decades before complex analysis was formalized to offer a proof. Can modern technology in part mimic Gauss's intuition? The past five years saw an explosion of activity in using AI to assist the human mind in uncovering new mathematics: finding patterns, accelerating computations, and raising conjectures via the machine learning of pure, noiseless data. The aim of this book, a first of its kind, is to collect research and survey articles from experts in this emerging dialogue between theoretical mathematics and machine learning. It does not dwell on the well-known multitude of mathematical techniques in deep learning, but focuses on the reverse relationship: how machine learning helps with mathematics. Taking a panoramic approach, the topics range from combinatorics to number theory, and from geometry to quantum field theory and string theory. Aimed at PhD students as well as seasoned researchers, each self-contained chapter offers a glimpse of an exciting future of this symbiosis.

Book excerpt: 'This book presents a timely set of academic and intellectual views on Salam’s scientific passion, contribution and personality, and will be of great interest to academics in the fields of particle physics, high energy physics and scientific history of the developing world.'Contemporary PhysicsIn honor of one of the most prolific and exciting scientists of the second half of the last century, a memorial meeting was organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University for Professor Abdus Salam's 90th Birthday in January 2016.Salam believed that 'scientific thought is the common heritage of all mankind' and that the developing world should play its part, not merely by importing technology but by being the arbiter of its own scientific destiny. That belief saw him rise from humble beginnings in a village in Pakistan to become one of the world's most original and influential particle physicists, culminating in the 1979 Nobel Prize (shared with Glashow and Weinberg) for contributions to electroweak unification, which forms an integral part of the Standard Model. The book collected the papers presented at this memorable event which saw many distinguished scientists participating as speakers to reflect on Prof Salam's great passion for the science and achievements.

This book addresses the question: how far are we from such discovery? Over the last few decades, multiple roads to finding a quantum theory of gravity have been proposed but no obvious description of nature has emerged in this domain. What is to be made of this situation? This volume probes the state-of-the art in this daunting quest of theoretical physics by collecting critical interviews with nearly forty leading theorists in this field. These broad-ranging conversations give important insights and candid opinions on the various approaches to quantum gravity, including string theory, loop quantum gravity, causal set theory and asymptotic safety. This unique, readable overview provides a gateway into cutting edge research for students and others who wish to engage with the open problem of quantum gravity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gathers the lecture notes of the Les Houches Summer School that was held in August 2011 for an audience of advanced graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in particle physics, theoretical physics, and cosmology, areas where new experimental results were on the verge of being discovered at CERN. Every Les Houches School has its own distinct character. This one was held during a summer of great anticipation that at any moment contact might be made with the most recent theories of the nature of the fundamental forces and the structure of space-time. In fact, during the session, the long anticipated discovery of the Higgs particle was announced. The book vividly describes the fruitful and healthy "schizophrenia" that is the rule among the community of theoreticians who have split into several components: those doing phenomenology, and those dealing with highly theoretical problems, with a few trying to bridge both domains. The lectures by theoreticians covered many directions in the theory of elementary particles, from classics such as the Supersymmetric Standard Model to very recent ideas such as the relation between black holes, hydrodynamics, and gauge-gravity duality. The lectures by experimentalists explained in detail how intensively and how precisely the LHC collider has verified the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model, predictions that were at the front lines of experimental discovery during the 70's, 80's and 90's, and how the LHC is ready to make new discoveries. They described many of the ingenious and pioneering techniques developed at CERN for the detection and the data analysis of billions of billions of proton-proton collisions.

Specifically, we define a Jacobi form on SL (~) to be a holomorphic function 2 (JC = upper half-plane) satisfying the t\-10 transformation eouations 2Tiimcz· k CT +d a-r +b z) (1) ((cT+d) e cp(T, z) cp CT +d ' CT +d (2) rjl(T, z+h+]l) and having a Four·ier expansion of the form 00 e2Tii(nT +rz) (3) cp(T, z) 2: c(n, r) 2:: rE~ n=O 2 r ~ 4nm Here k and m are natural numbers, called the weight and index of rp, respectively. Note that th e function cp (T, 0) is an ordinary modular formofweight k, whileforfixed T thefunction z-+rjl( -r, z) isa function of the type normally used to embed the elliptic curve ~/~T + ~ into a projective space. If m= 0, then cp is independent of z and the definition reduces to the usual notion of modular forms in one variable. We give three other examples of situations where functions satisfying (1)-(3) arise classically: 1. Theta series. Let Q: ~-+ ~ be a positive definite integer valued quadratic form and B the associated bilinear form.

Observations of the cosmic microwave background have revealed strong evidence for inflationary expansion in the very early universe, while new insights about compactifications of string theory have led to a deeper understanding of inflation in a framework that unifies quantum mechanics and general relativity. Written by two of the leading researchers in the field, this complete and accessible volume provides a modern treatment of inflationary cosmology and its connections to string theory and elementary particle theory. After an up-to-date experimental summary, the authors present the foundations of effective field theory, string theory, and string compactifications, setting the stage for a detailed examination of models of inflation in string theory. Three appendices contain background material in geometry and cosmological perturbation theory, making this a self-contained resource for graduate students and researchers in string theory, cosmology, and related fields.

Book excerpt: This book intends to construct a theory of modular forms for families of Calabi-Yau threefolds with Hodge numbers of the third cohomology equal to one. It discusses many differences and similarities between the new theory and the classical theory of modular forms defined on the upper half plane. The main examples of the new theory are topological string partition functions which encode the Gromov-Witten invariants of the mirror Calabi-Yau threefolds. It is mainly written for two primary target audiences: researchers in classical modular and automorphic forms who wish to understand the q-expansions of physicists derived from Calabi-Yau threefolds, and mathematicians in enumerative algebraic geometry who want to understand how mirror symmetry counts rational curves in compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. This book is also recommended for mathematicians who work with automorphic forms and their role in algebraic geometry, in particular for those who have noticed that the class of algebraic varieties involved in their study is limited: for instance, it does not include compact non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds. A basic knowledge of complex analysis, differential equations, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry is required for a smooth reading of the book.

Book excerpt: This work is motivated by and develops connections between several branches of mathematics and physics--the theories of Lie algebras, finite groups and modular functions in mathematics, and string theory in physics. The first part of the book presents a new mathematical theory of vertex operator algebras, the algebraic counterpart of two-dimensional holomorphic conformal quantum field theory. The remaining part constructs the Monster finite simple group as the automorphism group of a very special vertex operator algebra, called the "moonshine module" because of its relevance to "monstrous moonshine."

Not only does it open possibilities for new forms of computing but it also calls into question the peaceful coexistence between classical space-time and quantum physics with scenarios that reopen the relationships between locality and nonlocality in the foundational structure of physics. Curated by two international experts Ignazio Licata and Fabrizio Tamburini, this volume hosts a selection of particularly significant essays for the new territories, and is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Prof. Ignazio Licata.
