Book excerpt: In the United States, antisocial behavior represents a significant threat to the mental health of young persons. As such, it appears that the problem is most acute among minority youth, particularly young African-American and Hispanic males (Guerra, Eron, Huesmann, Tolan, and Van Acker, 1992; Rodriguez and Zayas, 1990). Although the literature on this topic remains scarce, the majority of the research has focused on urban populations. A recent study documented the mental health problems and the needs of youth living in rural areas (American Psychological Association Monitor, 1993). Findings suggest that the problems most frequently encountered among these youth include behavioral problems, stress, and substance abuse. To date, there is scant empirical research that investigates the problems of stress and delinquency in a rural setting. The present study explored the relationship between stress and delinquency among Hispanic rural youth.The role of moderator variables--coping, social resources, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and gender--were examined to determine important factors that may affect the relationship between stress and delinquency. Four main questions were examined: (1) What are the life stressors, social resources, and coping strategies identified by high school students living in a rural setting? (2) Is there a relationship between stress (life events) and delinquency? (3) Do self-esteem, self-efficacy, social resources, and the type of coping used by the adolescent moderate stress, promote or hinder healthy functioning the presence or absence or delinquency? (4) Are there gender differences in reported life stressors, resources, and coping strategies identified by adolescents?Data from all the subjects, including demographic information and all the questionnaires administered, formed the pool for final analysis. ANOVAS were performed to determine the significance of moderator effects. Analysis revealed that life stressors, namely, school, peer, and family stressors, related to violent behavior amoung youth. Moreover, moderator variables, primarily social resources and self-esteem, buffered the relationship between stress and delinquency. Gender differences were observed with female youth experiencing less stress and maintaining more resources than their male counterparts. Implications and future directions for research are discussed.

However, despite the demonstrated efficacy of many prevention programs, variability in response is the rule with some participants responding very little and others accounting for the bulk of the positive impact of the program. Better understanding the processes associated with better and worse response to prevention is a critical first step in refining and adapting existing programs, or alternatively designing new prevention programs with enhanced outcomes. Because vulnerabilities to substance use, emotional problems, risky sexual behavior and other behavioral problems are influenced by a combination of environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors, mediated in part through psychological processes (Kreek et al., 2005; Rutter et al., 2006), the study of genetic and epigenetic vulnerability and susceptibility factors provides an important starting point for efforts to address this critical need. A growing body of research on differential genetic susceptibility indicates that efforts to enhance prevention impact may benefit from consideration of the contribution of individual genetic differences to treatment response (Brody et al., 2013). In addition, the recent expansion of genetic research to include a focus on epigenetic change provides considerable promise for the development of indicated prevention and individually tailored prevention efforts. However, before this promise can be realized, a number of theoretical and practical challenges remain. Thus, through this special section, we propose to provide a foundation for a new era of prevention research in which the principles of prevention science are combined with genomic science. In the current special section we will bring together authors to deal with genetic and epigenetically driven processes relevant to depression, substance abuse, and sexual risk taking. Together they will comment on, and provide data relevant to, assessment, research and statistical methods, development of biomarkers, and implementation strategies with disadvantaged and high-risk populations.
