A total of 295 medical students (226 male & 69 female) are included in this study to determine prevalence of depression & type D personality among medical students of Midnapore Medical College, West Bengal to find out whether they have any significant association or not. Moreover, Perceived Stress Score Index (PSSI) among study population was carried out to compare it among students with and without depression.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Abstract: Background Metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of metabolic dysfunctions denoting a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. The key risk factors include insulin resistance and obesity. In recent decades psychological factors, including Type A personality, Type D personality, anxiety, and depression, have been found to be additional risk factors of metabolic syndrome. As people's behaviours and personalities are often influenced by cultural values, it would seem to be necessary to examine the associations between Type A and Type D personalities and metabolic syndrome within the context of culture. This study specifically examines the issue in the context of Chinese culture. In addition, people with Type A personality who tend to feel impatience or time urgency, anger or hostility, and competitiveness, were reported to be positively associated with anxiety. People with Type D personality who would easily have negative affectivity and social inhibition were reported to be positively associated with anxiety as well as depression. Therefore, anxiety or depression might have an effect on the associations between Type A and Type D personalities. However, to my best knowledge, no previous studies have examined the associations among Type A and Type D personalities, metabolic syndrome, and anxiety/depression. Objective This study examines associations among Type A and Type D personalities, metabolic syndrome, and anxiety/depression. It includes: 1) validating the Chinese versions of the Type A personality scale (Adolescent/Adult Type A Behaviour Scale, AATABS-3) and Type D personality scale (DS-14); 2) assessing the associations between Type A and Type D personalities with metabolic syndrome; 3) investigating the associations between anxiety/depression and metabolic syndrome; 4) measuring the association between Type A personality and anxiety; 5) testing the association between Type D personality and anxiety, as well as depression; and 6) determining the associations among Type A and Type D personalities, metabolic syndrome, and anxiety/depression. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted on a random community sample of 741 adults in Hong Kong recruited by cluster sampling. Participants meeting the screening criteria of metabolic syndrome were offered further physical examination for confirming the diagnosis. Results For the Chinese version AATABS-3 scale (revised-AATABS-3), exploratory factor analysis (EFA) produced an 11-item 3-factor solution. The three factors were: 1) impatience/time urgency; 2) hostility/anger; and 3) competitiveness. The revised-AATABS-3 scale showed satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.74). For the Chinese version DS-14 scale (revised-DS-14), EFA provided a 10-item 2-factor solution. The two factors were: negative affectivity and social inhibition. The revised-DS-14 scale showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.90). Gender differences appeared in the associations between Type A and Type D personalities and metabolic syndrome. In the total population and female participants, there were no significant associations between Type A personality and metabolic syndrome. Chronic negative emotions such as depression and anxiety place cardiac patients at greater risk for death and recurrence of cardiovascular disease. In 2008 the editor published a book related to this topic, titled Psychotherapy with Cardiac Patients: Behavioral Cardiology in Practice (American Psychological Association). Aside from that book, there are very few resources specifically written for clinicians who treat psychologically distressed cardiac patients. Unlike other medical specialty areas such as oncology, the field of cardiology has been slow to integrate behavioral treatments into the delivery of service. Perhaps because the field has been largely defined and dominated by researchers, mental health clinicians are only starting to recognize behavioral cardiology as a viable arena in which to practice. There is a large void in the practitioner literature on behavioral cardiology. In a review of Psychotherapy with Cardiac Patients, Paul Efthim, Ph.D. wrote, "Her new book goes well beyond previous works by giving specific and detailed guidance about how to tailor psychological interventions with this variegated population." He added, "It would benefit from even more details about treatment approaches." This proposed volume goes beyond the editor’s previous volume by providing in-depth descriptions of behavioral treatments for distressed cardiac patients written by eminent leaders in behavioral cardiology. This book describes a wide range of behavioral treatments for the common psychologically based problems encountered by clinicians who treat cardiac patients. The book is organized as follows: Part I focuses on the most psychologically challenging and common presentations of cardiac diagnosis; coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. This section also includes a chapter on heart transplantation, which is a treatment, not a diagnosis, but a treatment that incurs profound psychological impact for the individual. In Part II, behavioral interventions for the general cardiac population are described. Mainstream therapies such as stress management, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medical family therapy are described, along with approaches that have less empirical support but considerable practical significance such as personality-guided therapy and interventions aimed at altering type D personality traits. The literature in behavioral cardiology has a rich history of investigating maladaptive personality traits and thus it is important to include behavioral approaches that target personality in this volume. Part III focuses on common behavioral problems encountered by clinicians who work with this patient population. Most patients who seek psychological help do so because they perceive themselves to be stressed due to their job or overextended in all areas of their life. Other people with heart disease present with sleep problems and/or an inability to motivate themselves to exercise or quit smoking. There are many practical behavioral approaches that can be helpful for patients with these difficulties and these are detailed in this section of the book. The conclusion of the book focuses on how to integrate the behavioral treatments described in the preceding chapters into a comprehensive treatment model.

Thus, with an immense interest in exploring the mind-body relationship in lifestyle diseases, the thought of various psychological aspects influencing the wellness of people battling T2DM emerged. The researcher was always fascinated with exploring how personality dimensions influence people's behaviour and lifestyle. Therefore, with the help of the supervisor and guidance from the Doctoral Committee, the researcher narrowed down the psychosocial aspects down to personality, gender and life stress. Currently, Type II diabetes is addressed as "Type 2 diabetes" or "T2DM". Therefore, in the following text and chapters, the researcher decided to use the term T2DM. The current study focused on identifying the relevant variables that are related to depression in T2DM. The emotional issues in lifestyle disorders are topic for recent research in the field of health psychology. Among them, depression in diabetes has been extensively studied. Empirical studies establish a relationship between diabetes and depression. Review of the literature revealed many studies that focused on the relationship of various parameters of this population with depression. The researcher has selected personality, gender and life stress based on these empirical studies. There are certain types of personalities with sensitivity to depression (Boyce & Mason, 1996). Life stress is the perception of an acute stressor (Naliboff et al., 2004). Gender is an easily identifiable social variable. The researcher attempted to study the relationship of these variables with depression in People with T2DM. The researcher decided to understand the significance of a bio psychosocial model in understanding depression in T2DM. The Diatheses Stress Model heavily inspired the current study. In the following paragraphs, the researcher attempted to explain the parameters of the study and the relevant literature for each one. The first section of this chapter introduces Type 2 Diabetes mellitus by explaining the history, epidemiology, and risk factors, criteria for screening and diagnosis, and consequences of T2DM. The second section explains the history, types, causes and symptoms of depression. It also presents relevant literature on the relationship between depression and T2DM. The researcher has justified the use of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in this current study with the help of empirical research studies. In the third section, the researcher has explained the concept of personality, which includes various theories of personality, history of personality assessment and type theories of personality. As this study utilises the Type A, B, C and D personality theories for identifying the participants with Type D personality, relevant literature of the measure used in the study has been provided. The fourth and fifth section of this chapter provides introduction, details, relationship with depression and literature of life stress and gender in T2DM respectively. The last section explains the rationale of the study, followed by the objectives identified and hypotheses formulated from the relevant literature.
