Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book excerpt: Most service failures by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in copper alloys are caused by the conjoint action of five factors, (1) water, (2) oxygen, (3) tensile stress, (4) alloy composition and structure, and (5) ammonia or perhaps alternatively ammonia-like complexing agents. Sulfur dioxide can also be responsible for SCC in industrial atmospheres. Alloys have been classified in four categories of susceptibility. Examples have been given illustrating the roles of each of the five factors. The model widely believed responsible for most service failures involves the periodic formation and rupture of a film of Cu2O. Mercury and its compounds must be kept away from copper alloys.

Book excerpt: Four factors that cause stress corrosion cracking are sufficient stress, a suitable corrodent, a susceptible alloy, and time. The nature and sources of both applied and residual stress are discussed. The sources of residual stress that are peculiar to the brass industry are described. The copper (Cu) metals are listed in order of their relative susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. Zinc (Zn) in Cu contributes to the probability of its cracking; nickel (Ni) in Cu metals tends to inhibit it. Stress corrosion cracking is not instantaneous, so time is a factor in its occurrence. Various methods for the prevention of stress corrosion cracking are discussed. Some examples of stress corrosion cracking in service are described. Probability is discussed in relation to its role of predicting the stress corrosion cracking of Cu metals. Testing of Cu metals for their resistance to stress corrosion cracking may employ loops or U-bends. Applied stress may be effected by dead weight loading or by the use of springs. Corrodents may be chemical solutions, natural environments (atmosphere, sea water) or exposure to service environments. The metallographic appearance of stress corrosion cracks in Cu alloys is described as are the crack paths in brass and in other metals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the stress-corrosion cracking of aluminum alloys, and it represents an effort by DMIC to expand on the information contained in DMIC Memorandum 202, 'Stress-Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys', dated February 15, 1965. DMIC Report 228 begins by presenting a comprehensive definition of stress-corrosion cracking. This is followed by sections dealing with (1) the historical development and growth in awareness of the problem, (2) the mechanisms involved, and (3) the theory of stress-corrosion cracking. A section on experimental techniques is presented. These techniques include test methods used to determine the susceptibility of alloys to stress-corrosion cracking, as well as more refined methods of studying the fundamental mechanisms of the problem. Different evaluation methods, applicable to obtaining the different objectives of stress-corrosion testing, are also presented. All of the foregoing serve as background to the sections on stress-corrosion-cracking behavior of aluminum alloys and preventive measures. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been proposed that the lattice mismatch between a dealloyed layer and the substrate alloy may play a role in the transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TSCC) of copper alloys. This investigation uses the single-exposure X-ray technique to measure the residual stress in a dealloyed layer formed by the selective dissolution of copper (Cu) from a copper-gold (Cu-18Au) alloy. The gold-rich dealloyed layer was found to have an average compressive stress of 39.3 MPa, indicative of a lattice mismatch at the alloy/dealloyed layer interface. Polycrystalline specimens of Cu-18Au that were dealloyed and then stressed during anodic polarization to relatively large overpotentials for copper dissolution showed cracking that propagated well into the substrate alloy. The cracking was predominantly transgranular, and the fracture surfaces showed features consistent with a transgranular cleavage mechanism. On the other hand, specimens that were dealloyed and then stressed while polarized to relatively low overpotentials for copper dissolution, formed cracks in the dealloyed layer that were always arrested at the alloy/dealloyed layer interface. Lateral resolution was a fraction of a micrometre (?m), so that it was obvious that within this resolution limit there was no propagation into the bulk alloy. These results suggest that the lattice mismatch by itself is not sufficient to propagate a crack into the substrate alloy. However, results for a wider range of conditions and with improved resolution are now needed to more completely address this issue.
