This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes analytical methods for calculating stresses and damage caused by degradation of the matrix constituent in polymer matrix composite materials. Laminate geometry, material properties, and matrix degradation states are specified as functions of position and time. Matrix shrinkage and property changes are modeled as functions of the degradation states. The model is incorporated into an existing composite mechanics computer code. Stresses, strains, and deformations at the laminate, ply, and micro levels are calculated, and from these calculations it is determined if there is failure of any kind. The rationale for the model (based on published experimental work) is presented, its integration into the laminate analysis code is outlined, and example results are given, with comparisons to existing material and structural data. The mechanisms behind the changes in properties and in surface cracking during long-term aging of polyimide matrix composites are clarified. High-temperature-material test methods are also evaluated. Book Synopsis Environmental Degradation of Industrial Composites by : Celine A Mahieux
Download or read book Environmental Degradation of Industrial Composites written by Celine A Mahieux and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Book Synopsis Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures by : Rikard Benton Heslehurst
Download or read book Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures written by Rikard Benton Heslehurst and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.
Book Synopsis Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems by : Kenneth L. Reifsnider
Download or read book Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems written by Kenneth L. Reifsnider and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 2002-04-24 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daring, original approach to understanding and predicting the mechanical behavior of materials "Damage is an abstraction . . . Strength is an observable, an independent variable that can be measured, with clear and familiar engineering definitions." -from the Preface to Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems Long-term behavior is one of the most challenging and important aspects of material engineering. There is a great need for a useful conceptual or operational framework for measuring long-term behavior. As much a revolution in philosophy as an engineering text, Damage Tolerance and Durability of Material Systems postulates a new mechanistic philosophy and methodology for predicting the remaining strength and life of engineering material. This philosophy associates the local physical changes in material states and stress states caused by time-variable applied environments with global properties and performance. There are three fundamental issues associated with the mechanical behavior of engineering materials and structures: their stiffness, strength, and life. Treating these issues from the standpoint of technical difficulty, time, and cost for characterization, and relationship to safety, reliability, liability, and economy, the authors explore such topics as: * Damage tolerance and failure modes * Factors that determine composite strength * Micromechanical models of composite stiffness and strength * Stiffness evolution * Strength evolution during damage accumulation * Non-uniform stress states * Lifetime prediction With a robust selection of example applications and case studies, this book takes a step toward the fulfillment of a vision of a future in which the prediction of physical properties from first principles will make possible the creation and application of new materials and material systems at a remarkable cost savings.

Book Synopsis Time Dependent and Nonlinear Effects in Polymers and Composites by : Richard Allan Schapery
Download or read book Time Dependent and Nonlinear Effects in Polymers and Composites written by Richard Allan Schapery and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 2000 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Improved reliability in commercial and military applications requires improved understanding of and predictive models for the time- dependent and nonlinear mechanical behavior of polymeric composites. The May 1998 American Society for Testing and Materials symposium sought to fuse the efforts in this direction of specialists in polymers and composites; these 18 papers are therefore grouped under the subheadings of polymers and composites. Primary polymer topics are chemical and physical aging, nonlinear viscoelasticity, and viscoplasticity. Composites' issues include: the effect of physical aging on time-dependent behavior, multiaxial nonlinear effects, compressive behavior, nonlinear viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity, failure mechanisms, hygrothermal effects, durability, and accelerated strength testing. Schapery is affiliated with the U. of Texas at Austin, and Sun is at Purdue U. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
