Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve post-tensioned prestressed concrete I-beams and three hollow box beams were loaded to failure. Four I-beams were tested at 21 days; all others were tested after 10 to 12 years of live load. Live load ranged from zero to 1.5 times the design live load. The I-beams were straight, 42 feet long, and 24 inches deep. Five I-beams were post-tensioned with ungrouted cables. Seven I-beams were post-tensioned with steel bars; four were grouted. The hollow box beams were gable-shaped with straight tendons. The box beams were 42 feet long, 33 inches deep, 18 inches wide, and post-tensioned with ungrouted, stranded-wire cables. In general, the flexural stiffness of all beams was less than the stiffness computed from the ACl code. The ultimate moment capacity of all beams was greater than values computed from the ACl code; the ultimate moment capacity was 13% greater for I-beams with bar tendons; 14% greater for I-beams with cable tendons, and 11% greater for the box beams. The difference was least 7% for beams with bonded tendons. The average ratio of clear span to collapse deflection for all I-beams was 64; the ratio was 52 for the box beams. The average factor of safety against collapse was 2.46 for the I-beams and 2.05 for the box beams. Prestress loss, type of tendon, time variation of concrete strength, and live-load history did not significantly affect the ultimate moment capacity of the beams. (Author).

Download or read book Expedient Upgrading of Existing Structures for Fallout Protection written by William L. Huff and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted in support of the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency's (DCPA) Crisis Relocation Planning (CRP) program in which existing structures will be upgraded to provide fallout shelters for a relocated population. A demonstration test was conducted in which a residential dwelling was upgraded by placing soil against the walls and on the roof of the structure. The shelter was large enough to house 80 people. Upgrading was accomplished partially by hand labor and machinery. The test showed that a conventional structure could be upgraded and that the shelter occupants using tools and materials found in most homes could if necessary upgrade their shelter during the expected 2- or 3-day period of crisis relocation preceding a nuclear attack.

Download or read book Effects of Long-time Loads on Prestressed Concrete Beams written by R. A. Breckenridge and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty post-tensioned concrete beams were loaded for 10 to 12 years, and changes in deflections, prestressing forces, and concrete strains were recorded. All of the beams were simply supported on a 40-foot span. Twenty-two of the beams were straight and had an I cross-section. Eight of these were prestressed with cables. The other fourteen were prestressed with high-strength steel bars, and eight of these beams were grouted after being post-tensioned. The twenty-two I-beams were subjected to loads varying in magnitude from dead load only to dead load plus 1.5 design live load. Eight of the beams had a gabled shape with a hollow-box cross section and were post-tensioned with wires running straight through. Six of these beams were uniformly loaded with concrete weights to provide four different loading conditions. The beams with no live loads continued to deflect upward for about 1 year. Their total camber was about 2.1 times their initial camber due to prestressing. The loaded beams continued to deflect downward for several years. In 6 1/2 years the I-beams had undergone about 94% of their total deflection due to live loads, and the hollow-box beams had reached their maximum. The maximum midpoint deflections due to live loads were from 2.2 to 2.8 times the initial deflections due to those loads. Loss of prestress was a function of the magnitude of the sustained loads. It was highest for beams with no live loads, reaching its maximum of 24% in 7 years.

Book Synopsis Simplified LRFD Bridge Design by : Jai B. Kim
Download or read book Simplified LRFD Bridge Design written by Jai B. Kim and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed to comply with the fifth edition of the AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Specifications [2010]––Simplified LRFD Bridge Design is "How To" use the Specifications book. Most engineering books utilize traditional deductive practices, beginning with in-depth theories and progressing to the application of theories. The inductive method in the book uses alternative approaches, literally teaching backwards. The book introduces topics by presenting specific design examples. Theories can be understood by students because they appear in the text only after specific design examples are presented, establishing the need to know theories. The emphasis of the book is on step-by-step design procedures of highway bridges by the LRFD method, and "How to Use" the AASHTO Specifications to solve design problems. Some of the design examples and practice problems covered include: Load combinations and load factors Strength limit states for superstructure design Design Live Load HL- 93 Un-factored and Factored Design Loads Fatigue Limit State and fatigue life; Service Limit State Number of design lanes Multiple presence factor of live load Dynamic load allowance Distribution of Live Loads per Lane Wind Loads, Earthquake Loads Plastic moment capacity of composite steel-concrete beam LRFR Load Rating Simplified LRFD Bridge Design is a study guide for engineers preparing for the PE examination as well as a classroom text for civil engineering students and a reference for practicing engineers. Eight design examples and three practice problems describe and introduce the use of articles, tables, and figures from the AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Specifications. Whenever articles, tables, and figures in examples appear throughout the text, AASHTO LRFD specification numbers are also cited, so that users can cross-reference the material.

Book Synopsis Modern Prestressed Concrete by : James R. Libby
Download or read book Modern Prestressed Concrete written by James R. Libby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with a dual purpose, as a reference book for practicing engineers and as a textbook for students of prestressed concrete. It represents the fifth generation of books on this subject written by its author. Significant additions and revisions have been made in this edition. Chapters 2 and 3 contain new material intended to assist the engineer in understanding factors affecting the time-dependent properties of the reinforcement and concrete used in prestressing concrete, as well as to facilitate the evaluation of their effects on prestress loss and deflection. Flexural strength, shear strength, and bond of prestressed concrete members were treated in a single chapter in the of flexural strength has third edition. Now, in the fourth edition, the treatment been expanded, with more emphasis on strain compatibility, and placed in Chapter 5 which is devoted to this subject alone. Chapter 6 of this edition, on flexural-shear strength, torsional strength, and bond of prestressed reinforce ment, was expanded to include discussions of Compression Field Theory and torsion that were not treated in the earlier editions. In similar fashion, expanded discussions of loss of prestress, deflection, and partial prestressing now are presented separately, in Chapter 7. Minor additions and revisions have been made to the material contained in the remaining chapters with the exception of xv xvi I PREFACE Chapter 17. This chapter, which is devoted to construction considerations, has important new material on constructibility and tolerances as related to prestressed concrete.
