Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as core text or handy reference on two key areas of metallic materials: (i) mechanical behavior and properties evaluated by mechanical testing; and (ii) different types of metal working or forming operations to produce useful shapes. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into two parts. The first part contains nine chapters which describe tension (including elastic stress – strain relation, relevant theory of plasticity, and strengthening methods), compression, hardness, bending, torsion – pure shear, impact loading, creep and stress rupture, fatigue, and fracture. The second part is composed of seven chapters and covers fundamentals of mechanical working, forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing of flat strip, round bar, and tube, deep drawing, and high-energy rate forming. The book comprises an exhaustive description of mechanical properties evaluated by testing of metals and metal working in sufficient depth and with reasonably wide coverage. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and includes many solved problems. More than 150 numerical problems and many multiple choice questions as exercise along with their answers have also been provided. The mathematical analyses are well elaborated without skipping any intermediate steps. Slab method of analysis or free-body equilibrium approach is used for the analytical treatment of mechanical working processes. For hot working processes, different frictional conditions (sliding, sticking and mixed sticking–sliding) have been considered to estimate the deformation loads. In addition to the slab method of analysis, this book also contains slip-line field theory, its application to the static system, and the steady state motion, Further, this book includes upper-bound theorem, and upper-bound solutions for indentation, compression, extrusion and strip drawing. The book can be used to teach graduate and undergraduate courses offered to students of mechanical, aerospace, production, manufacturing and metallurgical engineering disciplines. The book can also be used for metallurgists and practicing engineers in industry and development courses in the metallurgy and metallic manufacturing industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile strength, fatigue strength and ductility are important properties of nanostructured metallic materials, which make them suitable for use in applications where strength or strength-to-weight ratios are important. Nanostructured metals and alloys reviews the latest technologies used for production of these materials, as well as recent advances in research into their structure and mechanical properties. One of the most important issues facing nanostructured metals and alloys is how to produce them. Part one describes the different methods used to process bulk nanostructured metals and alloys, including chapters on severe plastic deformation, mechanical alloying and electrodeposition among others. Part two concentrates on the microstructure and properties of nanostructured metals, with chapters studying deformation structures such as twins, microstructure of ferrous alloys by equal channel angular processing, and characteristic structures of nanostructured metals prepared by plastic deformation. In part three, the mechanical properties of nanostructured metals and alloys are discussed, with chapters on such topics as strengthening mechanisms, nanostructured metals based on molecular dynamics computer simulations, and surface deformation. Part four focuses on existing and developing applications of nanostructured metals and alloys, covering topics such as nanostructured steel for automotives, steel sheet and nanostructured coatings by spraying. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Nanostructured metals and alloys is a standard reference for manufacturers of metal components, as well as those with an academic research interest in metals and materials with enhanced properties.

Book excerpt: Strength of Metals and Alloys is a collection of papers presented at the 5th International Conference on the Strength of Metals and Alloys held in Aachen, Germany, on August 27-31, 1979. Contributors explore advances that have been made in understanding the strength of metals and alloys and cover topics ranging from plasticity and crystal structure to microstructural models for friction and wear; dynamical effects in deformation; and microscopic mechanisms of metal fatigue. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an analysis of the differences between the plastic deformation of face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centered cubic metals in relation to intrinsic dislocation mobilities resulting from the interaction of the dislocation core with the crystal lattice. The reader is then introduced to dislocation models for fatigue and their application to cases of friction and wear. The following chapters focus on the mechanisms controlling the creep of single phase metals and alloys; precipitation and dispersion hardening; deformation of polycrystals; solid solution hardening; and superposition of alloy hardening, strain hardening, and dynamic recovery. The results of in situ deformation experiments using high-voltage electron microscopy are also presented. The final chapter is devoted to the mechanisms underlying the recovery and recrystallization of doped tungsten. This monograph will be a valuable resource for metallurgists and materials scientists.

INCORPORATING THE COMMERCIAL TEXT BOOK COMPANY PITMAN HOUSE, 381383 CHURCH STREET, TORONTO PREFACE THIS book is the outcome of a series of articles on Testing Machines and their Applications which I contributed to Machinery during the years 1931-1932. On considering requests for the publication of the articles in book form, I felt that, while a number of books on the testing of materials were in existence, there was room for one that coupled descriptions of modern testing equipment with its mode of use and which at the same time embraced in a practical way the theory underlying present-day developments in the testing of metals and their alloys. Consequently, the original articles form but a small part of the book. Only such types of testing equipment are described as may be found in up-to-date works, testing rooms, and laboratories. Moreover, some attempt has been made to keep within the range of tests already standardized by the British Standards Institution, or which bear closely on commercial testing. As the demand on engineering practice becomes more severe, it is reflected in the test room and its personnel. It is hoped, therefore, that the book will be helpful to those whose work brings theminto close touch with mechanical testing, and for whom, in fact, the book is mainly intended. Students of Strength of Materials should also find the book of service. I have adopted the plan of placing references at the end of the book and of indexing them, each with the number of the page to which it refers. My acknowledgments must be made with respect to sources of information and help. Especially must I thank Professor W. R. D. Jones, D. Sc., for his assistance and criticism through out the progress of the work. I have also to thank Mr. J. G. Grodsell for allowing me to draw upon his extensive experience in matters concerning sheet metals and Professor W. N. Thomas, M. A., D. Phil. To the Editor of Machinery for permission to make use of bhe articles contributed to that Journal to the Institution of A. utomobile Engineers and The American Society for Testing Materials for allowing me to extract from Papers published vi PREFACE in their respective Proceedings and which are included among the list of references, I have pleasure in also making acknow ledgment. Book excerpt: The completely revised Second Edition of Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist provides a solid understanding of the basic principles and current practices of metallurgy. This major new edition is for anyone who uses, makes, buys or tests metal products. For both beginners and others seeking a basic refresher, the new Second Edition of the popular Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist gives an all-new modern view on the basic principles and practices of metallurgy. This new edition is extensively updated with broader coverage of topics, new and improved illustrations, and more explanation of basic concepts. Why are cast irons so suitable for casting? Do some nonferrous alloys respond to heat treatment like steels? Why is corrosion so pernicious? These are questions that can be answered in this updated reference with many new illustrations, examples, and descriptions of basic metallurgy.
