Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the international edition of the proceedings of IS-Seoul 2011, the Fifth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, held in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2011.The book includes 7 invited lectures, as well as 158 technical papers selected from the 182 submitted. The symposium explored ideas about the complex load-deformation response in geomaterials, including laboratory methods for small and large strains; anisotropy and localization; time-dependent responses in soils; characteristics of treated, unsaturated, and natural geomaterials; applications in field methods; evaluation of field performance in geotechnical structures; and physical and numerical modeling in geomechanics. These topics were grouped under a number of main themes, including experimental investigations from very small strains to beyond failure; behavior, characterization and modeling of various geomaterials; and practical prediction and interpretation of ground response: field observation and case histories. Both the symposium and this book represent an important contribution to the exchange of advanced knowledge and ideas in geotechnical engineering and promote partnership among participants worldwide.

Book Synopsis Consolidation Characteristics and Undrained Strength of Saturated Soft Clay Under Repeated Impact Loading by : B. Bai
Download or read book Consolidation Characteristics and Undrained Strength of Saturated Soft Clay Under Repeated Impact Loading written by B. Bai and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consolidation characteristics of saturated soft clay under repeated impact loading are studied by laboratory tests. Particularly, the influence of drainage conditions on consolidation and reconsolidation of soft clay are analyzed in detail. The uniqueness of the relationship between pore water pressure and reconsolidation volumetric strain is described, and the methods for determining the coefficient of reconsolidation volume compressibility and the reconsolidation compression index are given. It is demonstrated that the samples undergoing several stages of impact and reconsolidation show an apparent quasi-overconsolidation state, and have an increased shear strength. Models for predicting the deformation and the undrained strength of soft clay foundation from impact loading are also suggested. In the models, the conditions of partial drainage and stages of impact are taken into account. Calculated results by the present models are in good agreement with the test data.

Book Synopsis Advanced Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics by : Alessandro Tarantino
Download or read book Advanced Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics written by Alessandro Tarantino and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of experimental unsaturated soil mechanics has grown considerably over the last decade. In the laboratory and in the field, innovative techniques have been introduced into mechanical, hydraulic, and geo-environmental testing. Normally, this information is widely dispersed throughout journals and conference proceedings and it is often difficult to identify suitable equipment and instrumentation for research or professional purposes. In this volume, however, the authors bring together the latest research in laboratory and field testing techniques, and the equipment employed, and examine the current state-of-the-art in a forum devoted solely to experimental unsaturated soil mechanics. The papers published in the proceedings were peer-reviewed by internationally-recognized researchers. The topics tackled by the papers include suction measurement, suction control, mechanical and hydraulic laboratory testing, geo-environmental testing, and field-testing.

Book Synopsis Soil Strength and Slope Stability by : J. Michael Duncan
Download or read book Soil Strength and Slope Stability written by J. Michael Duncan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the critical issue of slope stability and safety Soil Strength and Slope Stability, Second Edition presents the latest thinking and techniques in the assessment of natural and man-made slopes, and the factors that cause them to survive or crumble. Using clear, concise language and practical examples, the book explains the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering as applied to slopes and embankments. The new second edition includes a thorough discussion on the use of analysis software, providing the background to understand what the software is doing, along with several methods of manual analysis that allow readers to verify software results. The book also includes a new case study about Hurricane Katrina failures at 17th Street and London Avenue Canal, plus additional case studies that frame the principles and techniques described. Slope stability is a critical element of geotechnical engineering, involved in virtually every civil engineering project, especially highway development. Soil Strength and Slope Stability fills the gap in industry literature by providing practical information on the subject without including extraneous theory that may distract from the application. This balanced approach provides clear guidance for professionals in the field, while remaining comprehensive enough for use as a graduate-level text. Topics include: Mechanics of soil and limit equilibrium procedures Analyzing slope stability, rapid drawdown, and partial consolidation Safety, reliability, and stability analyses Reinforced slopes, stabilization, and repair The book also describes examples and causes of slope failure and stability conditions for analysis, and includes an appendix of slope stability charts. Given how vital slope stability is to public safety, a comprehensive resource for analysis and practical action is a valuable tool. Soil Strength and Slope Stability is the definitive guide to the subject, proving useful both in the classroom and in the field.
