The strength and behavior of restrained reinforced concrete slabs were investigated under both static and dynamic loads. Nine 6-foot-square slabs were tested: six under uniform static pressure and three under long-duration dynamic loads. Steel reinforcement ranged from zero to 1.33 percent. The slabs failed initially in a flexural mode, followed by total collapse at a much greater deflection. The thinner slabs deflected more than 2.5 times their thickness under both types of loading. The theoretical study deals with a square slab, restrained against rotation and longitudinal movement at the edges. The study covers static resistance, failure criteria, size and extent of fragments, and design recommendations. An analytical method is developed to predict the static resistance, deflection, and longitudinal restraining thrust at ultimate failure. The resistance and behavior of longitudinally restrained square slabs are predictable, and if properly designed can resist dynamic loads effectively and more economically than those with no longitudinal edge restraint. Book excerpt: Increases in ultimate strengths of 23.7 (Series I) and 24.6 (Series II) percent under dynamic loading were obtained. Theoretical slab strengths were determined. Modification of the equations used allowed good predictions of tensile membrane resistance of the static slabs. The equations were used to predict peak pressures sustained by the dynamic slabs.

Book excerpt: Behaviour of Building Structures Subjected to Progressive Collapse gives in-depth and up-to-date quantitative and numerical analysis of building structures against progressive collapse. It does so at various levels, including bare steel joints, composite joints and sub-assemblages and frames under quasi-static loading conditions. The book provides analysis of the force transfer mechanisms of composite structures and reinforced concrete structures, along with detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive collapse resistances. It includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse-resisting mechanisms. The collapse of the World Trade Center in New York has spurred extensive experimental study and numerical analysis of the structural behavior of buildings under progressive collapse scenarios. Although design guidelines have been published by governments, most are missing up-to-date numerical and experimental results, quantitative accounts of force transfer mechanisms, and numerical guidelines. - Offers in-depth analysis and numerical modeling for building structures against progressive collapse - Provides analysis of the force-transfer mechanisms of composite and reinforced concrete structures - Gives detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive resistances - Includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse resisting mechanisms - Offers a comprehensive reference for progressive collapse analysis and the design of building structures

Book excerpt: The objectives of this investigation were to study the strength and behavior of slowly (statically) loaded reinforced concrete slab-column connections and to determine the effect of rapid (dynamic) loading on the strength and behavior by comparison with the static test results. Nineteen full-scale models of a connection and adjoining slab area, consisting of a simply supported slab 84 or 94 inches square and 6-1/2 inches thick loaded concentrically on a 10- or 20-inch-square stub column at the center of the slab, were tested. The main variables were the amounts of reinforcement in the slab (p = 0.75 and 1.50 percent), the column size, and the loading speed. Eight specimens were loaded to failure statically, two were subjected to a very rapidly applied load of short duration, and nine were loaded to failure by a rapidly applied load with a rise time chosen to represent the conditions in a blast-loaded structure. The static test results are compared with 12 shear strength prediction methods. Differences between the mechanism of shear failure in slabs and beams are examined. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study was performed in conjunction with a Federal Emergency Management Agency program to plan, design, and construct keyworker blast shelters which would be used in high-risk areas of the country during and after a nuclear attack. The shelters considered in this study were box-type structures in which damage is much more likely to occur in the roof slab than in the walls or floor. In this part of the program, the effect of edge restraint on slab behavior was investigated. The primary objective was to determine the effects of partial rotational restraint on slab strength, ductility, and mechanism of failure. Sixteen one-way, reinforced concrete plate elements were tested in a reaction structure under uniform static water pressure.
