Book excerpt: William Taylor (1821-1902) was a Methodist minister specializing in "street preaching" in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., when the Methodist church sent him to California as a missionary evangelist in 1849. He remained in the West for seven years, going on to become one of the church's most tireless worldwide evangelists. He later conducted crusades in Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa. In 1884 he was named Missionary Bishop for Africa and he focused his energies on missionary activities on that continent. Taylor spent his last years in California, the site of his first mission. Seven years' street preaching in San Francisco (1857) offers Taylor's memoirs of his career in the West, concentrating on open-air evangelism in general and experiences on the street corners of San Francisco and Sacramento and in camp-meetings in the mine fields, 1849-1856. The book focuses on the nature of the sinners who repented at Taylor's words: drunkards, gamblers, seamen; and on the moral and political depravity of San Francisco that culminated in the creation of the Vigilance Committee. Unlike most recent work on popular music, Peters concentrates largely on lyrical content to defend the provocative claim that the Welsh band pushes the critical message shaped in their lyrics to the forefront. Their music, this suggests, along with sleeve art, body-art, video-clips, clothes, interviews and performances, serves to emphasise this critical message and the primary role played by the band’s lyrics. Blending the disciplines of popular music studies, culture studies and philosophy, Peters confronts the ideas of German philosopher and social critic Theodor W. Adorno with the entire catalogue of Manic Street Preachers, from their 1988 single ‘Suicide Alley’ to their 2018 album Resistance is Futile. Although Adorno argues that popular music is unable to resist the standardising machinery of consumption culture, Peters paradoxically uses his ideas to show that Manic Street Preachers releases shape ‘critical models’ with which to formulate social and political critique. This notion of the ‘critical model’ enables Peters to argue that the catalogue of Manic Street Preachers critically addresses a wide range of themes, from totalitarianism to Holocaust representation, postmodern temporality to Europeanism, and from Nietzsche’s ideas about self-overcoming to reflections on digimodernism and post-truth politics. The book therefore persuasively shows that Manic Street Preacher lyrics constitute an intertextual network of links between diverse cultural and political phenomena, encouraging listeners to critically reflect on the structures that shape our lives.

He gives a chapter on his own English roots and background where he says his Saviour showed him the first signs of sin of which he needed to take to His cross. He mentions first hand experience of Jesuit and Christian Brother school teachers, who not surprisingly, he is no fan of. Yet his criticisms again are not left to Roman Catholicism alone. As in his first book, often humorous, often tragic words, but now not just in sermon notes but observations, experiences, speaking notes, modern parables, one or two poems and also in his own mostly pen and ink illustrations. He gives a little more detail than in his first book of his working for his Saviour in missionary organisations such as Prison Fellowship, SASRA and local church work. Through it all, he leaves the same message for all: look to the Bible for inspiration but especially to unbelievers for salvation only in the Bibles Author ,The Holy Spirit and the Word of God Jesus Christ!
