Part memoir, part journey into the compelling world of Thoroughbred horse racing, My Racing Heart gallops headlong into the wild culture and fabulous creatures that rise up around a racetrack. Nan Mooney looks at the horses, jockeys, and trainers; the gambling and corruption; and racing's age-old history and forever offbeat society. From the dusty backstretch at a small-town track to the stands at magnificent Churchill Downs, Nan Mooney captures the risks and the glory, the excitement and the passion, for horse lovers, sports fans, and anyone who has ever craved a place to run wild.

Chapter III FIRST FAMILIES OF VIRGINIA The greater number of thoroughbreds in the entire South find probably in the United States, in 1883, traced to some of the Virginia horses named in this chapter. This statement is made after a careful study of the pedigrees of the 88 principal stallions in service in the United States in 1883, and the pedigrees selected, at random, of 139 thoroughbreds, bred or owned in Tennessee and Kentucky between 1888 and 1896, the full tide period of post-bellum activities in the thoroughbred industry in the United States, especially in Tennessee and Kentucky. He got many fine stallions and brood mares and his blood became a favorite cross in Virginia. Janus, a chestnut and, from his shoulders back, the most perfect horse ever seen in Virginia, was foaled in England in 1746. His sire was Janus (by the Godolphin) dam by Fox; g. dam by the Bald Galloway. Janus was imported by Mordecia Booth of Gloucester County in 1752. In the third and fourth generations his descendants exhibited the same compactness of form, strength and power that characterized their progenitor. The Janus stock exceeded all others in the United States for speed, durability and uniformity of shape and were noted as the producers of more good saddle horses than any other stock. Celer, son of Janus, foaled in 1774, the property of Mr. Mead, of Virginia, propagated a stock equal in every quality to that of his sire....

As independent breeders, as salesmen and promoters, as innovators and as conservators of racing and breeding, four generations of the Hancock family have played a vital role in the development of the Thoroughbred. From the original Ellerslie Farm in Virginia to Claiborne Farm and Stone Farm in Kentucky, the Hancocks have been a dominant force in the American and, indeed, the international racing scene. It has been said that the secret to the success of the Hancocks was the philosophy that success lies not in breeding the occasional champion, but rather in controlling the bloodlines of the champions of the future. Here are the business strategies, the breeding theories, the champion horses of the generations of diligent, insightful men who have given so much to the industry
