Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quartz is the major porosity-reducing cement in many sandstonesequences. Therefore, Quartz cements represent a key source ofpetrographic and geochemical information about diagenetic history. They are also the major determinant of sandstone reservoirquality. While the ultimate goal of research in this area is to makerobust predictions about the amount and distribution of quartzcements in a wide variety of depositional and burial settings, there are nevertheless large areas of the subject that are poorlyunderstood and remain the subject of controversy. The aim of this Volume, which is based partly on paperssubmitted to a 1996 workshop in Belfast, and partly on invitedcontributions, is to bring together some of the main strands ofresearch into quartz cements and provide a focus for debate anddirection for future research. This book will be welcomed by sedimentologists, petrographersand geochemists involved in sandstone digenesis, as well as bypetroleum geologists seeking a deeper understanding of the factorsinfluencing reservoir porosity and permeability. Contributors from 11 countries and 4 continents. Represents the benchmark in quartz cement research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the principles of Sequence Stratigraphy were first published 20 years ago, it was not immediately clear that this concept would revolutionise the way we look at deposition and architecture of sedimentary rocks. Perhaps in retrospect it should not have been so surprising. For the first time seismic data were clear enough that large scale depositional geometries could be resolved; geometries that were not evident from well data alone, and in outcrop work visible only in the largest cliff sections. The observations from seismic data made by the Exxon workers in the 1960's and 1970's were a crucial "piece of the jigsaw" in our knowledge of the way sediments are deposited, and formed the basis for the new paradigm of Sequence Stratigraphy.Gradually through the 1980's the tool of Sequence Stratigraphy was applied to a wide variety of subsurface problems; most commonly large-scale regional reviews of 2D seismic data. Geologists and geophysicists in the oil industry began to realise that here was a way of thinking about rocks that could be used in a true predictive sense. The paradigm implied, that one systems tract should follow another in a predictable way, that observations in one part of a basin had implications in another part, and that undetected play systems could be inferred, and targeted with exploration programs.Sequence Stratigraphy has now gone through a second phase of evolution. The initial concepts have been applied to well and core data. Methodologies have evolved for identifying systems tracts from trends in logs and depositional facies, and from (often subtle) observations in core. The resolving power of 3D seismic data has increased considerably, and we can now see depositional bodies on a relatively small scale, and map their internal character using attribute analysis. Sequence Stratigraphy has entered its High Resolution phase.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are poised to embark on a new era of discovery in the study of geomorphology. The discipline has a long and illustrious history, but in recent years an entirely new way of studying landscapes and seascapes has been developed. It involves the use of 3D seismic data. Just as CAT scans allow medical staff to view our anatomy in 3D, seismic data now allows Earth scientists to do what the early geomorphologists could only dream of - view tens and hundreds of square kilometres of the Earth's subsurface in 3D and therefore see for the first time how landscapes have evolved through time. This volume demonstrates how Earth scientists are starting to use this relatively new tool to study the dynamic evolution of a range of sedimentary environments.

Book excerpt: Exchange of information in the field of earth sciences is increasingly needed to stay informed about advances. However, the continuous increase in the number of journal articles and books is very noticeable, while the available time to keep up is decreasing. Such a large flow of information commonly necessitates professionals to search selec tively for material and special publications in one's sub-discipline that have more specific coverage. In addition to surveying research needs, earth scientists working in a pure or applied research environment collect and produce information that often is of interest to the much larger group of industry-employed geologists and geophysicists, to professionals employed by agencies, and to students. To accommodate this exchange of needed information, Springer-Verlag is launching a monograph series entitled "Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology." This series will cover a number of subjects related to sediments and sedimentary rocks in a manner that both the researcher and the industrially oriented earth scientist can use constructively. Pub lications in this monograph series may fit one or more of the following main categories: Topical A topical subject will cover either the different aspects of a selected environment of deposition, or present a world tour of a particular depositional environment to dem onstrate its variability and its commonalities. The author(s) or editor(s) accepts the responsibility to guide the reader as to the state of knowledge, rather than providing a set of independent chapters.

Book excerpt: Integration of ichnological information into sedimentological models, and vice versa, is one of the main means by which we can improve our understanding of ancient depositional environments. Mainly intended for sedimentologists, this book aims to make ichnological methods as part of facies interpretation more popular, providing an analytical review of the ichnology of all major depositional environments and the use of ichnology in biostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic analysis. It starts with an introduction to the historical aspect of ichnology, introducing common concepts and methods, and then continues with parts treating the main depositional systems from continental, shallow-marine and deep-marine siliciclastics, and marine carbonates. The last part is dedicated to the ichnology in hydrocarbon reservoir and aquifer characterization. - First overview in 25 years of the status of ichnological studies in facies reconstructions of all major depositional environments - Written by a selected, well-experienced and specialized international authorship - Provides easy access to the comprehensive and widespread literature

Book excerpt: The vertebrate fossil record extends back more than 500 million years, and bonebeds—localized concentrations of the skeletal remains of vertebrate animals—help unlock the secrets of this long history. Often spectacularly preserved, bonebeds—both modern and ancient—can reveal more about life histories, ecological associations, and preservation patterns than any single skeleton or bone. For this reason, bonebeds are frequently studied by paleobiologists, geologists, and archeologists seeking to piece together the vertebrate record. Thirteen respected researchers combine their experiences in Bonebeds, providing readers with workable definitions, theoretical frameworks, and a compendium of modern techniques in bonebed data collection and analysis. By addressing the historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of bonebed research, this edited volume—the first of its kind—provides the background and methods that students and professionals need to explore and understand these fantastic records of ancient life and death.
