This book shows that the definitions and implications of the concept of balanced growth vary significantly among the different disciplines in economic science, but are not exclusive at all. Terms such as sustainability or balanced growth have become buzzwords. In practice, they are often a desirable vision rather than an achievable objective. Why? Doubts may arise about the extent to which such concepts are compatible with a modern market economy. Is balanced growth possible at all? Is it reasonable to accept balanced growth as a norm? Why should a balanced growth path be a desirable strategy to pursue for policymakers, managers, employees, and other societal stakeholders? Empirical evidence suggests that the actual worldwide economic growth is not balanced at all. Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of the financial and economic crisis in 2007 and its accompanying spillover effects, our globalizing world has uncompromisingly shown the flip side of its coin. Its crisis-prone character has intensified the discussion about our economic system’s sustainability. Questions related to acceptable sovereign debt levels, suitable trade deficits and surpluses, firms’ growth targets, resource management and efficiency have aroused high interest. What is the cause of the observed imbalances? In our opinion, this debate must involve rethinking the qualitative and quantitative dimension of our present understanding of the nature of economic growth. Schwerpunkt bestehender Literatur zu strategischen Initiativen war bisher die Untersuchung von Faktoren, welche den Erfolg einzelner Initiativen beeinflussen. Trotz ihrer Bedeutung wurden Portfolios von strategischen Initiativen wenig untersucht. Ein besseres Verständnis von Initiativen-Portfolios ist wichtig, da im Zusammenspiel der Initiativen auf Portfolio-Ebene ein Effekt - positiv wie negativ - über die Summe der Effekte der einzelnen Initiativen hinaus bestehen kann. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation ist Portfolios von strategischen Initiativen zu untersuchen und damit zu einem besseren Verständnis beizutragen. Aus einer Komplexitäts- und Koordinationssicht betrachtet diese Dissertation zum einen die Auswirkungen mehrerer Design-Prinzipien von Portfolios auf den Unternehmenserfolg großer, diversifizierter Konzerne. Zum anderen beleuchtet diese Dissertation das Phänomen von Konzernprogrammen als eine wesentliche Managemententscheidung hinsichtlich der Organisation von Portfolios von Initiativen. Konzernprogramme bündeln als temporäre Organisationseinheiten mehrere strategische Initiativen und koordinieren diese. Dabei werden Faktoren, welche Firmen veranlassen Konzernprogramme einzurichten, und die Auswirkungen solcher Programme auf den Unternehmenserfolg analysiert. Die empirischen Analysen beruhen auf einen Datensatz in der europäischen Finanzindustrie von 2000 bis 2009. Zusammenfassend ist die Hauptaussage dieser Dissertation, dass Portfolio von Initiativen eine wichtige Analyseebene ist, da ein Portfolio-Effekt existiert, der über die Summe der einzelnen Initiativen hinausgeht. Damit ergänzt diese Dissertation Literatur zu strategischen.

The chapters here explore the reactions of different Western allies to the announcement of the SDI in 1983 and especially the 1985 invitation to participate. While existing studies have explored the origins of the American programme and the role it may have played in ending the Cold War, this volume breaks new ground by considering the impact of the SDI on transatlantic relations in the 1980s. Based on newly available archival sources, this volume re-evaluates the responses of eight NATO member-state governments, as well as the Soviet leadership, to the SDI. In addition to looking at ‘top-down’ governmental reactions, the volume also explores the ‘bottom-up’ response to the SDI of civil society and peace activists on both sides of the Atlantic. The volume examines how the American initiative – derisively named ‘Star Wars’ by its detractors – provoked a crisis in relations with its allies during the final decade of the Cold War and how those tensions within NATO were ultimately resolved. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War history, strategic studies, foreign policy and international history.
