Book Synopsis Rural Development in the Third World by : Chris Dixon
Download or read book Rural Development in the Third World written by Chris Dixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rural landscape of the Third World is generally seen as one worked by the impoverished. Chris Dixon shows that this is an increasingly inaccurate picture. Wealth does exist, with the landed often maintaining lifestyles comparable to their richest urban neighbours. And while land remains the basis of real wealth, the rural workforce is diversifying its activities away from agriculture becoming involved in a range of manufacturing, processing, trading and service industries. Yet still rural poverty persists, and the book illustrates just how difficult it is to assess the success of development initiatives adopted to eliminate it. This book, first published in 1990, provides a general introduction to the approaches, policies, and problems associated with Third World rural development. Rural Development in the Third World is relevant to students of geography, the environment and developmental issues.

Book excerpt: This report, based on an overview of recent regional developments, summarizes the revised World Bank assistance strategy for rural development in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. The rural sector includes the people; the economic development activities; the institutional, economic, and social infrastructure; and the natural resources of rural areas, and is thus not confined to agricultural alone. But this report focuses principally on Bank activities that support rural development and policy reforms designed to improve well-being and increase the competitiveness of all rural enterprises. Natural resources and social issues are addressed separately. Chapter 2 looks at the reform process in the rural sector, particularly the increasing differentiation between Central Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Chapter 3 examines the Bank's strategy for rural development as manifested in its Country Assistance Strategies (CAS) and existing loan portfolio in ECA countries. Chapter 3 ends by discussing the Bank's achievement targets and components of its regional strategy.

Book excerpt: Despite the fact that three quarters of the world's poor live in rural areas, the level of international development aid directed at rural areas has continued to decline over the last decade, particularly in terms of the agricultural sector. In 2001, lending for agricultural projects was the lowest in the World Bank's history. This publication presents the World Bank's new rural development strategy based upon a results oriented approach which stresses practice, implementation, monitoring and empowerment aspects. The strategy seeks to highlight rural development efforts, focusing on the needs of the rural poor, fostering a broad-based economic growth and addressing the impact of global developments on client countries.

Book Synopsis Strategies for Third World Development by : John S Augustine
Download or read book Strategies for Third World Development written by John S Augustine and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The raison d'etre of this collection of essays is both academic as well as pragmatic. While development seems to have acquired a purely economic connotation, the contributors to this book argue that it should actually be understood as a qualitative, directional adjunct of social change entering into the intangible and multidimensional area of the `human'. It has, therefore, a much deeper and fuller significance which can be readily explicated through the use of religion as an important parameter and component in its understanding. Development should be an endeavour to increase the `humanness' of the human. This collection of essays tries to bring about some sort of clarity to the understanding of this concept. By bringing together the various aspects that are imperative for building effective strategies for third world developement in its widest sense, it endeavours to introduce a pragmatic dimension to the concept.
