Book Synopsis Psychoanalysis, Culture and Social Action by : Dieter Flader
Download or read book Psychoanalysis, Culture and Social Action written by Dieter Flader and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-26 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dieter Flader explores how current social and cultural concerns are connected to the unconscious, and how this affects our responses to them. Flader focuses on the role of the ego, assessing how our feelings about these issues in adulthood grow from childhood fears and desires, and integrating the existing psychoanalytic theories of Winnicott, Lacan, Kohut, and others with sociological and political theory. The interdisciplinary approach not only analyses current social issues but also generates new perspectives and solutions, and examines examples including climate change, bullying, and vegetarianism.

Book excerpt: Men who use violence against women (ex- ) partners, constitutes a problem not only for the women but for all of society. Different kinds of approaches are necessary to protect victims, stop ongoing violence, and prevent both repetition and initiation of violent acts to control, frighten and dominate women. Efficient programs have been developed and tried in different countries. In this volume comprehensive assessments of needed interventions are presented together with research on the efficacy of programs by an international group of scholars from the field. Altogether there are obvious differences in legal contexts, philosophies, and experiences in different countries, results show that the combination of a legal and a re-educational approach is both necessary and most effective for reforming most groups of violent men. The combination of a carefully planned approach based on current knowledge and equally careful assessments and follow-ups over longer periods of time seems to give the best results. Research from a broad social and cultural perspective, including gender in-equalities, can also be a tool for application and refining knowledge to improve interventions and reform violent men.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Sexual Harassment by : Kathrin S. Zippel
Download or read book The Politics of Sexual Harassment written by Kathrin S. Zippel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual harassment, in particular in the workplace, is a controversial topic which often makes headline news. What accounts for the cross-national variation in laws, employer policies, and implementation of policies dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace? Why was the United States on the forefront of policy and legal solutions, and how did this affect politicization of sexual harassment in the European Union and its member states? Exploring the way sexual harassment has become a global issue, Kathrin Zippel draws on theories of comparative feminist policy, gender and welfare state regimes, and social movements to explore the distinct paths that the United States, the European Union and its member states, specifically Germany, have embarked on to address the issue. This comparison provides invaluable insights on the role of transnational movements in combatting sexual harassment, and on future efforts to implement the European Union Directive of 2002.

Book Synopsis How NATO Adapts by : Seth A. Johnston
Download or read book How NATO Adapts written by Seth A. Johnston and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-02 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite momentous change, NATO remains a crucial safeguard of security and peace. Today’s North Atlantic Treaty Organization, with nearly thirty members and a global reach, differs strikingly from the alliance of twelve created in 1949 to “keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down.” These differences are not simply the result of the Cold War’s end, 9/11, or recent twenty-first-century developments but represent a more general pattern of adaptability first seen in the incorporation of Germany as a full member of the alliance in the early 1950s. Unlike other enduring post–World War II institutions that continue to reflect the international politics of their founding era, NATO stands out for the boldness and frequency of its transformations over the past seventy years. In this compelling book, Seth A. Johnston presents readers with a detailed examination of how NATO adapts. Nearly every aspect of NATO—including its missions, functional scope, size, and membership—is profoundly different than at the organization’s founding. Using a theoretical framework of “critical junctures” to explain changes in NATO’s organization and strategy throughout its history, Johnston argues that the alliance’s own bureaucratic actors played important and often overlooked roles in these adaptations. Touching on renewed confrontation between Russia and the West, which has reignited the debate about NATO’s relevance, as well as a quarter century of post–Cold War rapprochement and more than a decade of expeditionary effort in Afghanistan, How NATO Adapts explores how crises from Ukraine to Syria have again made NATO’s capacity for adaptation a defining aspect of European and international security. Students, scholars, and policy practitioners will find this a useful resource for understanding NATO, transatlantic relations, and security in Europe and North America, as well as theories about change in international institutions.
Book Synopsis Gender Based Violence in University Communities by : Anitha, Sundari
Download or read book Gender Based Violence in University Communities written by Anitha, Sundari and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPUB and EPDF available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Until recently, higher education in the UK has largely failed to recognise gender-based violence (GBV) on campus, but following the UK government task force set up in 2015, universities are becoming more aware of the issue. And recent cases in the media about the sexualised abuse of power in institutions such as universities, Parliament and Hollywood highlight the prevalence and damaging impact of GBV. In this book, academics and practitioners provide the first in-depth overview of research and practice in GBV in universities. They set out the international context of ideologies, politics and institutional structures that underlie responses to GBV in elsewhere in Europe, in the US, and in Australia, and consider the implications of implementing related policy and practice. Presenting examples of innovative British approaches to engagement with the issue, the book also considers UK, EU and UN legislation to give an international perspective, making it of direct use to discussions of ‘what works’ in preventing GBV.
