Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper I develop a model of international duopoly, where firms invest in product differentiation. I show that firms have an incentive to free-ride on the investment of their rival, due to an externality generated by product differentiation. A further effect of product differentiation is the market-expansion effect, which induces consumers to increase their aggregate spending in the market. Depending on the strength of the two effects, the investments are either strategic substitutes or strategic complements. I link this result to strategic trade policy and show that the optimal policy depends on the strength of the market-expansion effect.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is a high-quality book on an important and central topic in the theory of industrial organisation. It is a cohesive and extremely well written volume which is destined to become a standard work on the subject.' - Mark Casson, University of Reading, UK This original new book offers a comprehensive and engaging perspective on the theory of vertical differentiation. It enables the reader to grasp the key concepts and effects that product quality has both on firms' behaviour and market structure, and the ways in which this relationship has evolved. With contributions from prominent figures in the field, the book investigates a number of important topics, such as the choice of the optimal product range, profit sharing, the existence of equilibrium in duopoly games, positional effects attached to status goods, international trade, collusion, advertising and the dynamics of capital accumulation for quality improvement and product innovation. Using both static and dynamic approaches, these aspects are assessed in relation to the manifold issues of regulation, competition policy and trade policy. Product differentiation and its influence on consumer behaviour and the performance of firms is a core topic in the existing literature in the fields of industrial organization, international trade and economic growth. This book will be an essential read for researchers, students and professional scholars working in these areas, especially those with an interest in antitrust regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few industries in modern market economies that do not manufacture differentiated products. This book provides a systematic explanation and analysis of the widespread prevalence of this important category of products. The authors concentrate on models in which product selection is endogenous. In the first four chapters they consider models that try to predict the level of product differentiation that would emerge in situations of market equilibrium. These market equilibria with differentiated products are characterised and then compared with social welfare optima. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between horizontal and vertical differentiation as well as to the related issues of product quality and durability. This book brings together the most important theoretical contributions to these topics in a succinct and coherent manner. One of its major strengths is the way in which it carefully sets out the basic intuition behind the formal results. It will be useful to advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in industrial economics and microeconomic theory.

Book excerpt: The competition between firms from developed (DC) and less developed countries (LDC) is typically in vertically differentiated products. We consider a model of price competition between DC and LDC firms with quality choice and imitation, and study the effects of ex post tariffs. The government faces a choice between commitment to free trade and imposing a tariff. Tariffs can lead to change in the rank of qualities compared to free trade. We identify conditions under which this quality reversal takes place, and show that quality reversal is necessary for trade policy to be superior to free trade in welfare terms.

Book Synopsis Strategic Trade Policy and Vertical Structure by : Steffen Ziss

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We introduce intermediaries into the Brander-Spencer model of strategic trade policy. A key finding is that in regimes involving independent retailers, output competition and linear pricing (and two-part tariffs under certain restrictions) the optimal policy involves an export tax instead of a subsidy. If firms commit to vertical structure before governments commit to policy, then under output competition firms choose integration, whereas if policy precedes structure, then at least one firm chooses separation. Under price competition separation is a dominant strategy regardless of whether the structure decision is made before or after the policy decision.

Book Synopsis Three Essays on Oligopolistic Competition, Product Differentiation and International Trade by : Fayçal Régis Sinaceur
Download or read book Three Essays on Oligopolistic Competition, Product Differentiation and International Trade written by Fayçal Régis Sinaceur and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thesis presents three essays in the area of strategic trade theory and policy. The first essay presents an analysis of trade and welfare between countries with asymmetric conditions. A two-period two-country address model of product differentiation is examined in which firms face an initial period of autarky. Trade takes place in the subsequent period and firms fully anticipate switches in trade regimes. Results suggest that historical (domestic) conditions matter a lot on the international market place. Firms that come from countries with a larger market tend to develop longer product lines, which puts that country in a dominant position in international competition. The model is also used to analyse gains/losses from trade in relation to country size. The second essay investigates the differential effects of specific and ad-valorem tariffs on quality, price and welfare in an oligopolistic industry consisting of foreign and domestic firms. These effects are shown to depend on the location of the home and foreign firms in the quality spectrum. Both tariffs are ranked and conditions for either tariff to be welfare superior are derived. Finally, the third essay presents an analysis of trade policy with endogenous market structure. A "third market model" is specified. Using a simple framework in which industry structure is derived endogenously as the outcome of product line decisions by firms, we show that governments have an incentive to affect the equilibrium product composition by setting non-zero subsidy rates in order to maximize domestic welfare. Subsidies may be uniform or non-uniform across goods and the optimal policy exhibits strong discontinuities as domestic welfare maximization implies a switch of regimes.
Book Synopsis Essays on Strategic Trade Policies, Differentiated Products, and Exhaustible Resources by : Jui-Hsien Stephen Chou

This book was released on 2007 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis consists of three essays. The firsts essay looks at the optimal export policy in the context of an vertically related industry with differentiated products, and analyze effects of the degree of product substitutability and market structure on the determination of such policy. It is shown that results obtained in a similar model with homogenous goods rivalry no longer hold when the goods are differentiated. Indeed, the degree of product substitutability plays an important role in the determination of export policies, it also determine whether a country can be better off under a trade policy war compared to free trade. The use of differentiated product setting also allows one to compare export policies and countries' welfare between Cournot and Bertrand competitions. It is found that the results of the comparison are also sensitive to the degree of product substitutability." --
