Download or read book Globalization [2 Volumes] written by Ashish Vaidya and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 2006 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge scholarship on the economic, international business, political, legal, and environmental ramifications of globalization--one of the hottest topics of the day. International trade is as old as nations. During the last five decades, however, advances in technology and transportation have changed the scope and method of international trade. Disputes rage about the effects of these changes; advocates for different positions offer argument, but little factual or theoretical analysis. Globalization offers all the information readers need to sort out the arguments. Written with the highest degree of scholarship, intended for college students or working professionals, the encyclopedia provides both introductory material to broad economic, legal, political, and environmental theory, and in-depth analysis of how theory interacts with practice in the framework of global trade. A trader in New York can, in a matter of seconds, execute a billion-dollar currency transaction in Hong Kong. What does this transaction mean to New Yorkers, to residents of Hong Kong, and to the rest of the world? This book gives readers the tools to answer those questions. 100 A-Z entries covering the major issues of globalization Reproduces the founding documents for the World Trade Organization and other international trade organizations Maps of trade blocs and regional organizations such as the European Union, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and Mercado Común del Sur (MERCOSUR) Charts, figures, and graphs illustrating data trends and statistical information Includes contributions from more than 100 specialists in economics, law, business, and other applicable fields

Book Synopsis Signing Italian/American Cinema by : Anthony Julian Tamburri
Download or read book Signing Italian/American Cinema written by Anthony Julian Tamburri and published by Ovunque Siamo Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book all share a common notion that a greater awareness of the potentiality of signification of sign functions is an indispensable tool for a more extensive understanding of how a film might signify-indeed, about how any text might signify. That said, I should state here at the outset that my use of the binomial "extensive understanding" is by no means evaluative; my only intention is to underscore that through semiotics and its various components of interpretation we can testify to the greater potentiality of signification that any text-e.g., cinematic, written, figurative-may produce with respect to a more conventional analytical process that, as well, does not take into consideration secondary or tertiary functions of the signs in question. -- from the Introduction In Signing Italian/American Cinema: A More Focused Look Anthony Tamburri means it. His new work employs the concentration of a neurosurgeon with the precision of a guided missile as he dissects, shatters and reexamines such films as the well-known and well-loved Big Night and not as well- known but equally beguiling Dinner Rush. Culture matters and his explanations of these films plus the classic Nuovomondo and the iconic Mean Streets makes you want to screen them a second and a third time. -- Richard Vetere, Playwright and film writer. Anthony Julian Tamburri's collection of essays about Italian American cinema will change the way you look at movies. Whether you study the form, teach cinema or watch for enjoyment, there is a rich garden of ideas in these essays that will challenge and delight you. Dr. Tamburri is one of the leading Italian American voices of our times. You will savor this collection. It's an intellectual Moviola by a man who knows movies. -- Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author The Shoemaker's Wife . Anthony Julian Tamburri is Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute and Distinguished Professor of European Languages and Literatures. Concentrating on cinema, literature, and semiotics, he has authored 14 books in both English and Italian. His books on Italian/American cinema include, Italian/American Short Films & Music Videos: A Semiotic Reading (Purdue, 2002) and Re-viewing Italian Americana: Generalities and Specificities on Cinema (Bordighera, 2011).

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurship Education by : Calvin A. Kent
Download or read book Entrepreneurship Education written by Calvin A. Kent and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-09-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed an explosion in the number of entrepreneurship education programs in this country. In this comprehensive volume, 18 contributors survey and report on the latest developments in entrepreneurship education at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. The contributors explore what works and what doesn't, suggest ways to improve current programs, and propose solutions for areas not adequately covered by existing programs. The contributors conclude that many traditional models of entrepreneurship education must be discarded if it is to be effective in the years to come. In particular, they argue that entrepreneurship cannot be taught--as it often is now--in non-entrepreneurial settings by teachers who are not themselves entrepreneurial. They demonstrate that such highly structured programs which minimize student involvement and creativity will fail to produce the entrepreneurs of the future. Thus they issue a call to educators nationwide to recognize the unique characteristics and contributions of entrepreneurs and to reorganize themselves to accommodate, cultivate, and perpetuate the process of entrepreneurship. The book begins with a discussion of the essential features of entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurship and education interface with each other. The contributors go on to discuss entrepreneurship on college campuses. They show how the entrepreneurship curriculum in schools of business has evolved from a course in small business management to full-blown programs in entrepreneurial studies and consider how programs should be designed for non-traditional students--potential and practicing entrepreneurs not currently in college. The contributors also look at how entrepreneurship can be integrated into a variety of secondary school courses in social studies as well as those in business and vocational education programs. They highlight new directions in vocational entrepreneurship education and look at the special problems involved in entrepreneurship education for the urban and at-risk student. Finally, the contributors address entrepreneurship education at the elementary level. Arguing that most young children are quite entrepreneurial in nature but lose that characteristic by the time they reach high school, the contributors discuss what can be done to keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive through the elementary grades.
Book Synopsis Environmental History of Water by : Petri S. Juuti
Download or read book Environmental History of Water written by Petri S. Juuti and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Water Development Report 2003 pointed out the extensive problem that: 'Sadly, the tragedy of the water crisis is not simply a result of lack of water but is, essentially, one of poor water governance.' Cross-sectional and historical intra-national and international comparisons have been recognized as a valuable method of study in different sectors of human life, including technologies and governance. Environmental History of Water fills this gap, with its main focus being on water and sanitation services and their evolution. Altogether 34 authors have written 30 chapters for this multidisciplinary book which divides into four chronological parts, from ancient cultures to the challenges of the 21st century, each with its introduction and conclusions written by the editors. The authors represent such disciplines as history of technology, history of public health, public policy, development studies, sociology, engineering and management sciences. This book emphasizes that the history of water and sanitation services is strongly linked to current water management and policy issues, as well as future implications. Geographically the book consists of local cases from all inhabited continents. The key penetrating themes of the book include especially population growth, health, water consumption, technological choices and governance. There is great need for general, long-term analysis at the global level. Lessons learned from earlier societies help us to understand the present crisis and challenges. This new book, Environmental History of Water, provides this analysis by studying these lessons.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Internationalization by : John K. Hudzik
Download or read book Comprehensive Internationalization written by John K. Hudzik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a timely insight into the internationalization of higher education institutions. The internationalization of higher education is a global phenomenon, but with substantial variation in how it is made operational in individual institutions. Comprehensive Internationalization focuses on desirable practices in institutions and their actual approaches to implement a more integrated, strategic, or comprehensive global engagement across their core missions: teaching, research, and service. Part I of the book investigates a wide range of issues governing the internationalization of institutions: Outlining the origins, meaning and evolution toward more strategic and comprehensive forms of internationalization; building an understanding of the meanings of comprehensive internationalization, as well as common aspirations, when linked to different types of institutions; understanding the rationales and motivations for internationalization and intended results; creating an institutional vision and culture to support comprehensive internationalization; and implementing key strategies for successful internationalization in terms of practical actions and programs and results, including identifying and ameliorating barriers, engaging organizational change, assessing outcomes, and obtaining resources. Part II of the book offers case stories from institutions across the globe which describe varying pathways toward more comprehensive internationalization. Institutions were chosen to reflect the diversity of higher education and approaches to internationalization. An analysis of the cases uncovers similarities and differences, as well as common lessons to be learned. With contributions from mainland Europe, Australia, the USA, the UK, Latin America, Singapore and South Africa, the global application of the book is unparalleled. Comprehensive Internationalization will be of vital interest to a wide variety of higher education institutional leaders and managers as they address the problems and solutions for institutional internationalization available to them in a rapidly changing educational world and a 21st Century global environment.

This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Inequality – examining our present while understanding our past. Social Inequality and Social Statification in US Society, 1st edition uses a historical and conceptual framework to explain social stratification and social inequality. The historical scope gives context to each issue discussed and allows the reader to understand how each topic has evolved over the course of American history. The authors use qualitative data to help explain socioeconomic issues and connect related topics. Each chapter examines major concepts, so readers can see how an individual’s success in stratified settings often relies heavily on their access to valued resources–types of capital which involve finances, schooling, social networking, and cultural competence. Analyzing the impact of capital types throughout the text helps map out the prospects for individuals, families, and also classes to maintain or alter their position in social-stratification systems. Learning Goals Upon completing this book, readers will be able to: Analyze the four major American classes, as well as how race and gender are linked to inequalities in the United States Understand attempts to reduce social inequality Identify major historical events that have influenced current trends Understand how qualitative sources help reveal the inner workings that accompany people’s struggles with the socioeconomic order Recognize the impact of social-stratification systems on individuals and families
