Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange Wonder confronts Western philosophy's ambivalent relationship to the Platonic "wonder" that reveals the strangeness of the everyday. On the one hand, this wonder is said to be the origin of all philosophy. On the other hand, it is associated with a kind of ignorance that ought to be extinguished as swiftly as possible. By endeavoring to resolve wonder's indeterminacy into certainty and calculability, philosophy paradoxically secures itself at the expense of its own condition of possibility. Strange Wonder locates a reopening of wonder's primordial uncertainty in the work of Martin Heidegger, for whom wonder is first experienced as the shock at the groundlessness of things and then as an astonishment that things nevertheless are. Mary-Jane Rubenstein traces this double movement through the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Jacques Derrida, ultimately thematizing wonder as the awesome, awful opening that exposes thinking to devastation as well as transformation. Rubenstein's study shows that wonder reveals the extraordinary in and through the ordinary, and is therefore crucial to the task of reimagining political, religious, and ethical terrain.

Book excerpt: Here are wonders of the animal kingdom, bizarre social practices of the past and present, remarkable and compelling human achievements, and breath-taking tales of nature at its most unpredictable. The photographs do not lie, and this book proves the adage: Seeing is believing. The true details of the famous stories are here: What's really going on at Loch Ness; what does Roswell, New Mexico, tell us; and, what about that cloud that looked like Jesus during the Korean War? The surprising, little-known tales are here as well: the window washer who fell 47 floors and walked away; and, the Christmas burglar who got stuck in a chimney .As P.T.Barnum might say: Strange but True is a colossal compendium of crazy coincidences, peculiar people and astounding animals. Step right up!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monstrous births, rains of blood, apparitions of battles in the sky – people in early modern England found all of these events to carry important religious and political meanings. In An age of wonders, available in paperback for the first time, William E. Burns explores the process by which these events became religiously and politically insignificant in the Restoration period. The story involves the establishment of early modern science, the shift from ‘enthusiastic’ to reasonable religion, and the fierce political combat between the Whigs and the Tories. This historical study is based on close readings of a variety of primary sources, both print and manuscript. Burns claims that prodigies lost their religious meaning and became subjects of scientific enquiry as a result of political struggles, first by the supporters of the restored monarchy and the Church of England against Protestant dissenters, and then by the Whig defenders of the Revolution of 1688 against the Tories and the Jacobites. By integrating religious and political history with the history of science, An age of wonders will be of great use to those working in the field of early modern history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Henderson teaches us how to wonder anew with a new vision of science illuminated by a rich range of literature, philosophy, art, and music.” —Hugh Aldersey-Williams, author of Dutch Light We live in a world that is known, every corner thoroughly explored. But has this knowledge cost us the ability to wonder? Wonder, Caspar Henderson argues, is at its most supremely valuable in just such a world because it reaffirms our humanity and gives us hope for the future. That’s the power of wonder, and that’s what we should aim to cultivate in our lives. But what are the wonders of the modern world? Henderson’s brilliant exploration borrows from the form of one of the oldest and most widely known sources of wonder: maps. Large, detailed mappae mundi invited people in medieval Europe to vividly imagine places and possibilities they had never seen before: manticores with the head of a man, the body of a lion, and the stinging tail of a scorpion; tribes of one-eyed men who fought griffins for diamonds; and fearsome Scythian warriors who drank the blood of their enemies from their skulls. A New Map of Wonders explores these and other realms of the wonderful, in different times and cultures and in the present day, taking readers from Aboriginal Australian landscapes to sacred sites in Great Britain, all the while keeping sight questions such as the cognitive basis of wonder and the relationship between wonder and science. Beautifully illustrated and written with wit and moral complexity, this sequel to The Book of Barely Imagined Beings is a fascinating account of the power of wonder and an unforgettable meditation on its importance to our future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Truly Beyond Wonders Alexia Petsalis-Diomidis investigates texts and material evidence associated with healing pilgrimage in the Roman empire during the second century AD. Her focus is upon one particular pilgrim, the famous orator Aelius Aristides, whose Sacred Tales, his fascinating account of dream visions, gruelling physical treatments, and sacred journeys, has been largely misunderstood and marginalized. Petsalis-Diomidis rehabilitates this text by placing it within the material context of the sanctuary of Asklepios at Pergamon, where the author spent two years in search of healing. The architecture, votive offerings, and ritual rules which governed the behaviour of pilgrims are used to build a picture of the experience of pilgrimage to this sanctuary. Truly Beyond Wonders ranges broadly over discourses of the body and travel and in so doing explores the place of healing pilgrimage and religion in Graeco-Roman society and culture. It is generously illustrated with more than 80 drawinsg and photographs, and four colour plates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more exciting prophecies concerning the Messiah is Isaiah 9:6, and it is very full and very pregnant in its meaning. Here we read the well-known nativity verse concerning the advent of the Messiah as a child born, (his blessed incarnation), and then the varied designations given to that child in his titles. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” There are seven designations in this verse, (including being, 1) born a child and 2) being a son), all of which could be turned in books themselves (and have been). To choose one title to speak on is very difficult. Jeremiah Burroughs, in this work, has chosen the term, “wonderful,” the third in the list, to consider. This work by Burroughs will help the Christian discern some of the sparks of Christ’s wonder in his various offices and works. Jesus is truly wonderful. From Isaiah 9:6 he will cover that Christ is the great wonder of the world. That Christ is wonderful in his offices of Prophet, Priest and King. That Christ is wonderful in his miracles. That Christ is wonderful in his death, resurrection, ascension and present intercession. That Christ is wonderful in the glory of the Father (in two parts) and then concludes with an application. This work is a great encouragement to have our eyes set on the wonders of Christ, and to contemplate daily the person and work of Christ, as God has given us his word to discern him and see him as wonderful.
