Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Journey is a Scripture-based fictional Christmas story. It deals with some of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The story traces the journey of the wise men from the east in search of the King, whose birth was portended by a bright star. The word journey in the title of the story signifies both the travel as well as the life-journey of the characters in the story. It describes how the lives of the wise men and the shepherds in the Judean wilderness intersect, and how their lives were affected by their visit to the manger in Bethlehem. A greater portion of the narrative includes how the life of a Bedouin shepherd boy was transformed by the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: Tillamook Passage is a novel for young adults. The story is historical fiction about the maritime trade of sea otter pelts and the Northwest coastal Indians. In 1788, the sloop Lady Washington, commanded by Captain Robert Gray, discovers native villages on a large, pristine bay which Gray names after the Indians: Tillamook. Barter with the natives, initially friendly, gives way to a surprise attack. During the ensuing battle, two young sailors become separated from the ship, and must hide from the marauding Indians. When their sloop vanishes into a foggy sea, they are marooned in a remote and primitive land. Their struggle, playing out against endless forests, rugged mountains and bountiful waters, is an epic tale of clashing cultures, fate, trust, and love. Tillamook Passage is a thrilling testament to the iron wills, brave hearts and sharp wits of the gritty jack-tars who came before us. Two worlds...one destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Seabrooks" is the first book in a three-part saga that I am writing. This three-part saga chronicles and depicts the Seabrook family as they struggle to maintain their position of neutrality in the Revolutionary War. The entire family, which consists of Betty, Henry, and John, is convicted to their well-entrenched views toward the war; that is that they wish for the war to end as quickly and peacefully as possible, and with the least amount of bloodshed and property damage as possible. And most important of all, they want to stay completely out of the entire affair. But they are tested by loyalists and patriots alike, and they have to resist temptations, pressures, and other factors that attempt to sway their opinions and ideologies. That is to say, both loyalists (as well as the British) and patriots want the neutralists to join their side because they both knew that it was the neutralists that held the balance of power, and thus, they held the key to victory. The Seabrooks are subjected to a series of events that test the integrity of their neutrality and their resolve to stay neutral. But eventually, a very significant event impacts the entire family and causes them to reassess their ideologies and political views in regards to the war. The saga focuses on the life of John Seabrook, who is the only son and child of Henry and Betty Seabrook. They are a strong and morally upright family, and they portray a typical and traditional family that was common during the Revolutionary War era. They are members of the roughly one third of the colonial Americans who wished to remain neutral in the war. These "neutralists," as I call them, took on a political view that emphasized not only staying uninvolved throughout the war, but they also desired a swift, bloodless, and peaceful resolution to the conflict; perhaps nowadays, one might refer to them as "pacifists."

Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book excerpt: Welcome to The Warren, where you'll meet Bumper, Roi, Anastasia, Gracie, and a few other rabbits as well. Each rabbit has a story to tell. Bumper loves his owner, the pretty woman with the long hair who calls him Little Bunny One. But when tragedy strikes and Bumper's lovely owner dies of cancer, he has to go live with a new owner, and he's scared. All rabbits are afraid of new things. He soon learns to love his new owner, but tragedy strikes again when his rear teeth start to hurt him and he has to go to the veterinarian. Going to the veterinarian means more new things that scare Bumper. But God means all things for our good, and he has something wonderful planned for Bumper. Roi is the most curious of rabbits, and he likes to solve puzzles. He likes to explore his owner's burrow. More than anything, he wants a girl bunny to be his soul mate. When he meets Anastasia, he knows he's met the one. But Anastasia is a wild rabbit, and she's weary of domesticated rabbits. When Roi does finally burrow his way into her heart, the two share one of the greatest loves ever known. It's heartbreaking then when Anastasia dies unexpectedly. But Gracie, another rabbit, just might be able to give Roi another chance at love. These stories show us that these furry, loveable creatures aren't so unlike us. Find hope and inspiration when you visit The Warren. Fred L. Tate served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-three years and now works in Hollywood as a stand-in for the actor David McCallum on the show NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He has owned many rabbits in his lifetime, and each rabbit inspired the stories in The Warren.

Book excerpt: "Nothing less than astonishing..."—Booklist (starred review) From a renowned international journalist comes a galvanizing international bestseller about mankind's oldest, most persistent, and most brutal problem—world hunger. There are now over 800 million starving people in the world. An average of 25,000 men and women, and in particular children, perish from hunger every day. Yet we produce enough food to feed the entire human population one-and-a-half times over. So why is it that world hunger remains such a deadly problem? In this crucial and inspiring work, award-winning author Martín Caparrós travels the globe in search of an answer. His investigation brings him to Africa and the Indian subcontinent where he witnesses starvation first-hand; to Chicago where he documents the greed of corporate food distributors; and to Buenos Aires where he accompanies trash scavengers in search of something to eat. An international bestseller when it first appeared, this first-ever English language edition has been updated by Caparrós to consider whether conditions that have improved or worsened since the book's European publication. With its deep reflections and courageous journalism, Caparrós has created a powerful and empathic work that remains committed to ending humankind's longest ongoing crisis.

Book excerpt: Whereas much has been written on the subject of art, the literature on the figure of the artist has been relatively scant. There are certainly countless biographies as well as essays dedicated to particular aspects of art - for example, the relationship between artists and their patrons - but there is no comprehensive text that puts together the pieces of the puzzle showing how the figure of the artist changed over the millennia. An Artist’s Story of Artists is an attempt to make good this lacuna by retracing the long and often fragmented path of the artist, from the Palaeolithic until this morning, more or less. During this journey, artists assumed and shed many guises. They were magicians, priests, legends, slaves, salaried workers, entrepreneurs, inventors, lunatics, revolutionaries, scientists, patrons and much else besides. They experimented with techniques and ideas, always aiming to find new ways to make art, and overcoming the boundaries determined by society, as well as those established by themselves. Highlights of this story are the complex relationships artists have always had with writing and literature, philosophy, technology, politics, religion and criticism, and the weighty stigma on manual work that for 5,000 years subdued them as they were regarded as halfwits who were good with their hands. This substantial work is divided into five phases, five great periods that witnessed the radical ways in which artists changed as they fought and lost battles among themselves and with society, and the ups and downs they experienced from being revered shamans reduced to reviled labourers, later raised to geniuses and then turned into doomed and damned artists. This book examines the role played by optical instruments, the reasons behind the origins of exhibitions, the paradoxes of art education, the clichés affecting artists, and the influences and interferences that have made them what they are today. The book finally examine
