Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think that 1 and 2 Corinthians are somebody else’s mail, then you need to think again. Paul wrote them for you and he wrote them for me. Right from the outset, his goal was far bigger than the city walls of Corinth. He copied them to “all the saints throughout Achaia” and to “all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” They are God’s message to believers in any local church in any place at any time. They describe the kind of church God can use. God inspired the Bible for a reason. He wants you read it and let it change your life. If you are willing to take this challenge seriously, then you will love Phil Moore’s devotional commentaries. Their bite-sized chapters are punchy and relevant, yet crammed with fascinating scholarship. Welcome to a new way of reading the Bible. Welcome to the Straight to the Heart series.

Book excerpt: The community Paul founded in Corinth gave him both joy and grief, for he was to encounter problems there of disunity, sin, and arrogance including the rejection of his own apostolic authority by some of his flock. His two epistles to the Corinthians come straight from the heart, as he appeals to them to live in peace, in righteousness, in generosity, and not to resist his God-given authority. His Corinthian correspondence abides as a lasting legacy and a challenge for all churches everywhere. About the Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series: This commentary was written for your grandmother and for your plumber. That is, it was written for the average layperson, for the nonprofessional who feels a bit intimidated by the presence of copious footnotes, long bibliographies, and all those other things which so enrich the lives of academics. Working from a literal translation of the original Greek, this commentary examines the text section by section, explaining its meaning in everyday language. Written from an Orthodox and patristic perspective, it maintains a balance between the devotional and the exegetical, feeding both the heart and the mind.

They knew that what they said would be unpopular - both then and now - but they also knew that it was God's Word and the only remedy for the problems that were facing the people of God. As a result, Christians today can still discover what God says to a Church in trouble. The truth isn't always popular, but Jeremiah and Ezekiel show us that it's glorious. God inspired the Bible for a reason. He wants you read it and let it change your life. If you are willing to take this challenge seriously, then you will love Phil Moore’s devotional commentaries. Our love lives will only work God’s way too, as Solomon celebrates in his risqué Song of Songs. Sadly, Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes in his old age as a record of what happened to him when he failed to follow his own advice. He warns us from experience that life really does only work God’s way. In Reading the Bible Supernaturally, best-selling author John Piper teaches us how to read the Bible in light of its divine author. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love. With insights into the biblical text drawn from decades of experience studying, preaching, and teaching Scripture, Piper helps us experience the transformative power of God's Word—a power that extends beyond the mere words on the page. Ultimately, Piper shows us that in the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something supernatural happens: we encounter the living God.

Book excerpt: In Paul's letters to the Corinthian church, the pastoral issues of a first-century Christian community stand out in bold relief. And as the apostle responds to these challenges, the fathers lean over his shoulder, marveling and commenting on his pastoral wisdom. Best known among these patristic commentators is Chrysostom, whose seventy-seven homilies on the two Corinthian epistles are a treasury of exposition and application. The fragmentary works of Didymus the Blind and Severian of Gabala give us samples of Greek exegesis from the Alexandrian and Antiochene schools. The partial work of Theodore of Mopsuestia was long valued in the church, and the comments of Theodoret of Cyr are notable for their sensitivity to the intertextuality of Scripture. Then there are Origen and Pelagius, whose notable errors need not obscure their brilliant insights into Scripture. But pride of place in this volume goes to the unknown fourth-century commentator now dubbed Ambrosiaster. His excellent commentary on 1 and 2 Corinthians was previously unavailable in English translation. This Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume opens a whole new way of reading these New Testament texts. The pastoral and theological interpretation of the fathers offers spiritual and intellectual sustenance to those who would read Paul again with open minds and hearts.

Book excerpt: The epistle of Paul that we know as 1 Corinthians is a letter to a church in trouble. One of the believers in Corinth wrote Paul asking a series of questions about the lack of unity, sex and marriage, eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols, the use and misuse of spiritual gifts, women in the church, contention in their love feasts and the resurrection of the dead. The letter revealed a church that was deeply flawed, but Paul answered with characteristic graciousness. He corrected their errors and, even though some of their problems were cultural and specific to Corinth, he provided deep and comprehensive explanations for the advice he gave. These discussions helps us think deeply about these issues in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul's answers are just as pertinent and applicable to the church today as they were to ancient Corinth. In both cases, Paul's and ours, the customs of antagonistic cultures have forced their way into the life and practices of the Church and Christian believers. After the church received Paul's first letter, they were visited by other false teachers who criticized Paul and began leading the church astray. This prompted Paul to send them a second letter in which he explained his philosophy of ministry, and discussed such ministerial concerns as freedom, personal rights and financial giving. He expressed his concern for those who were trapped in a lifestyle of sin and enumerated godly principles as to how believers should live in a time of persecution. Paul presents himself as a servant of Christ and a true apostle. He is a model for the believer aspiring to excellence in Christian service. Second Corinthians is the deepest and most personal letter that we have from Paul. This Study Guide for LIFE is a perfect companion to explain difficult portions of Paul's letters, to focus the reader's attention on what Paul really said and to expand that teaching into practical application. Study Guides for LIFE are ideally suited for use by individuals and small groups. Both the beginning believer and the professional minister will benefit from these guides. This Study Guide for LIFE offers three specific tools: 1) explanatory notes which offer insight into difficult or controversial passages; 2) searching questions which direct you back to the text for answers, and 3) probing questions that expand the context, and challenge you to apply the truths in these books to your own culture. Our goal is that you will know what the text says, what it means and will be able to apply it to your own situation appropriately. Through these tools, you will discover and understand the purpose, power and passion of Paul and the proper functioning of the New Testament church. It is our hope that you will be able to use these discoveries to fine-tune your Christian experience and enhance your own intimacy with Jesus Christ and the unique expression of His life in you. The Study Guide is appropriate for the study efforts of individuals, small groups or teachers preparing to explain these letters. Whether you are a curious seeker or a professional minister, the Study Guide for LIFE will direct your studies into the efforts of the apostles as they continue the work of Christ to establish His church. May it also stir your own heart to expand the influence of Christ in yourself, your circle of friends and into the uttermost parts of the earth. For in this day Jesus is purifying the church and gathering in the last of the lost in anticipation of His soon return to establish His Kingdom on earth.

Book excerpt: The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a unique twenty-eight-volume series encompassing all of Scripture and offering contemporary readers the opportunity to study for themselves the key writings of the early church fathers. Arranged by the books of the Bible, each portion of commentary allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture, rendered throughout the series in English in the ecumenically accepted Revised Standard Version of the Bible. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture does what very few of today's students of the Bible could do for themselves. With the aid of computer technology, the vast array of writings from the church fathers - including much that is available only in the ancient languages - have been combed for their comment on Scripture. From these results, scholars with a deep knowledge of the fathers and a heart for the church have hand-selected material for each volume, shaping, annotating and introducing it to today's readers. Each portion of commentary has been chosen for its salient insight, its rhetorical power and its faithful representation of the consensual exegesis of the early church. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is an ecumenical project, promoting a vital link of communication between today's varied Christian traditions and their common ancient ancestors in the faith. On this shared ground we listen as leading pastoral theologians of the church's first several centuries gather around the text of Scripture and offer their best theological, spiritual and pastoral insights. Today the historical-critical method of interpretation has nearly exhausted its claim on the biblical text and on the church. In its wake there is a wide-spread yearning among Christian individuals and communities for the wholesome, the deep and the enduring. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture seeks not to replace those excellent commentaries that have been produced in the twentieth century. It supplements them, framing them with interpretive voices that have long sustained the church and only recently have fallen silent. It invites us to listen with appreciative ears and sympathetic minds as our ancient ancestors in the faith describe and interpret the scriptural vistas as they see them. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a postcritical revival of the early commentary tradition known as the glossa ordinaria, a text artfully elaborated with ancient and authoritative reflections and insights. An uncommon companion for theological interpretation, spiritual reading, and wholesome teaching and preaching.

Book excerpt: Were it not for problems in the church at Corinth, we might never have had Paul's teaching on marriage and celibacy, supernatural gifts, the resurrection and, above all, his sublime description of Christian love. We have just two of the four letters he wrote to them. They reveal his major concerns for his converts - to see them mature as individuals and to integrate them properly into Spirit-filled fellowships. Follow-up was essential to New Testament evangelism. In the second, Paul reveals more than ever of his personal experience, his constant perils, his feelings (delight and disappointment), his reactions to rivals, his humiliations and his boasting - in short, the inner life of the apostle.
