This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the Session of the California Legislature of 1915 This little book is the fourth Of a series of reviews of the work of the California Legislature. The first was issued after the adjournment of the session of 1909. It was followed by the reviews of the 1911 and of the 1913 sessions. The purpose of publishing these reviews is to place in the hands of the people of California data by which they may form their own opinion of, the course of their representative in Senate or Assembly. It is not contended that all the measures which were before the 1915 session are considered. But enough measures are considered that the reader may form some opinion of the part which his representative took in the work of the session, the attitude he assumed, and the considerations which governed his course as a legislator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the Session of the California Legislature of 1913 No attempt has been made to deal with all the important subjects considered during the session. A better idea of the Legislature's record, the conditions under which it worked and the governing influences, can be had by thorough consideration of a few typical measures, than by brief and necessarily incomplete treatment of a considerable number. This view gov erned the preparation of the Stories of the 1909 and the 1911 sessions. It has been followed in writing the Story of the Session of 1913. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the Session of the California Legislature of 1911 Because of this, conditions have arisen which were not thought of when the State Constitution of 1879 was adopted. But reapportionment must be made under the provisions of the 1879 Constitution. The 1911 Legisla ture was frankly unable to deal with the new problems presented, and adjourned without a reapportionment bill having been passed. The subject of reapportionment is treated in detail. Download or read book The Enigma of the Aerofoil written by David Bloor and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do aircraft fly? How do their wings support them? In the early years of aviation, there was an intense dispute between British and German experts over the question of why and how an aircraft wing provides lift. The British, under the leadership of the great Cambridge mathematical physicist Lord Rayleigh, produced highly elaborate investigations of the nature of discontinuous flow, while the Germans, following Ludwig Prandtl in Göttingen, relied on the tradition called “technical mechanics” to explain the flow of air around a wing. Much of the basis of modern aerodynamics emerged from this remarkable episode, yet it has never been subject to a detailed historical and sociological analysis. In The Enigma of the Aerofoil, David Bloor probes a neglected aspect of this important period in the history of aviation. Bloor draws upon papers by the participants—their restricted technical reports, meeting minutes, and personal correspondence, much of which has never before been published—and reveals the impact that the divergent mathematical traditions of Cambridge and Göttingen had on this great debate. Bloor also addresses why the British, even after discovering the failings of their own theory, remained resistant to the German circulation theory for more than a decade. The result is essential reading for anyone studying the history, philosophy, or sociology of science or technology—and for all those intrigued by flight.
Book Synopsis Hendrik Petrus Berlage by : Hendrik Petrus Berlage
Download or read book Hendrik Petrus Berlage written by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. Although his Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century, Berlage's writings are highlighted here. Bringing together Berlage's most important texts, among them "Thoughts on Style in Architecture", "Architecture's Place in Modern Aesthetics", and "Art and Society", this volume presents a chapter in the history of European modernism. In his introduction, Iain Boyd Whyte demonstrates that the substantial contribution of Berlage's designs to modern architecture cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the aesthetic principles first laid out in his writings.

Download or read book The Dry Years written by Norman H. Clark and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the event of its publication in 1965, Murray Morgan wrote, The Dry Years, which might be subtitled The Fall and Rise of John Barleycorn, is a delightful blend of scholarship, narrative exposition and wit. ...Clark is knowing and acid about alcohol as a class problem. he points out that the drys were usually led by upperclass types whose peers would derive benefit by better habits in the working class. He does not, however, fall into the trap of attributing the attitudes of the reformers to hypocrisy. The drys were awash with sincerity. ...It is one of the many merits of this delightful book that Norman Clark does not rub our noses in the fact that though times change, problems remain. In this substantially updated edition of the classic story of a regions experience with Prohibition, Norman Clark reviews to the present the political history of liquor control in Washington State, and issue taken seriously in the state and the nation as those of black slavery, wage slavery, and child welfare. He traces the effect of social change upon liquor morality through nearly two hundred years of efforts to make the use of alcohol compatible with the American view of social progress.
