Book excerpt: Knickerbockers History of New York By Washington Irving This, then, broke upon me as the poetic age of our city; poetic from its very obscurity, and open, like the early and obscure days of ancient Rome, to all the embellishments of heroic fiction. I hailed my native city as fortunate above all other American cities in having an antiquity thus extending back into the regions of doubt and fable; neither did I conceive I was committing any grievous historical sin in helping out the few facts I could collect in this remote and forgotten region with figments of my own brain, or in giving characteristic attributes to the few names connected with it which I might dig up from oblivion. Book excerpt: "Knickerbocker's History of New York, From the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty" is a work of history, disguised as satire, which was published in 1809 by the American writer Washington Irving under the pseudonym Dietrich Knickerbocker. The full title of the work is "A history of New York, from the beginning of the world to the end of the Dutch dynasty. Containing, among many surprising and curious matters, the unutterable ponderings of Walter the Doubter, the disastrous projects of William the Testy, and the chivalric achievements of Peter the Headstrong, the three Dutch governors of New Amsterdam: being the only authentic history of the times that ever hath been published." Irving draws an unflattering image of the settlers of the colony New Nederland and the Dutch are drawn as lazy pipe smokers of little minds. The work is considered a satire on the political leadership of the United States. Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington and Oliver Goldsmith, and several histories of 15th-century Spain, dealing with subjects such as the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846.

These were unaware that Washington Irving acquired invented the person completely and positioned the advertisements himself. Knickerbocker's purported manuscript, A History of New York, was Irving's own. Told from Knickerbocker's viewpoint, A History of New York is a chronicle of New York's fifty years under Dutch guideline in the 1600s that has fast and loose with the reality, to uproarious impact. Book excerpt: Knickerbocker's History of New York is a satire on self-important local history and contemporary politics. Prior to its publication, Irving started a hoax akin to today's viral marketing campaigns; he placed a series of missing person adverts in New York newspapers seeking information on Diedrich Knickerbocker, a crusty Dutch historian who had allegedly gone missing from his hotel in New York City. As part of the ruse, Irving placed a notice-allegedly from the hotel's proprietor-informing readers that if Mr. Knickerbocker failed to return to the hotel to pay his bill, he would publish a manuscript Knickerbocker had left behind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of New York IT is the purpose of this story of the State of New York to indicate in outline rather than in detail the stages of growth through which the Commonwealth, from a purely mercantile venture in a newly-discovered world, advanced to its present imperial position in a sisterhood of sovereign States. Against the background of historic facts is thrown this record of a hypothetical Knickerbocker family, the members of which never attained to the eminence of power, wealth, or official station, but remained through all the stages of national de velopment ever the same simple folk active workers in their humble sphere but, with thousands like them, factors in the advancing career of a mighty State. Fragmentary as such sketches must necessarily be, the author trusts that they may serve to emphasize, in a novel way, certain historic happenings in the various epochs that mark the con tinual progress of the Empire State from its day of small things. If these, in turn, shall awaken in American readers a deeper interest in the more comprehensive histories of their nation, or of the States that stand as its component parts, the purpose of the author will have been fully served. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of New York: A Story for All Young People The bayonets gleamed brightly in the sun, as their steady rows came up the avenue. A strong squad of blue-coated policeman marched in advance to clear the way, and behind them marched the band. "Ur-r-r-ur-rub-a-dub-dub-boom-bomb-ur-rr-whang-clang!" for at that moment the shrilling of the fifes and the roll of the drums were lost in a clash of cymbals and in a storm of martial music. That grand burst of sound lasted only for a minute or so, and then a tune which Barry Redding knew seemed to find wings and to spread them and fly up above all other noises, so that it could make itself heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a New York House Green into Broadway, where Mr. Dolph kept on bowing, for half the town was out, taking the fresh morning for marketing and all man ner of shopping. Everybody knew Jacob Dolph afar off by his blue coat with the silver buttons, his nankeen waistcoat, and his red checked Indian silk neckcloth. He made it a sort of uniform. Captain Beare had brought him a bolt of nankeen and a silk kerchief every year since 1793, when Mr. Dolph gave him credit for the timber of which the Ursa Minor was built. And everybody seemed willing to make ac quaintance with young Jacob's London-made kerseymere breeches, of a bright canary color, and with his lavender silk coat, and with his little chapeau de Paris. Indeed, young Jacob was quite the most prominent moving spec tacle on Broadway, until they came to John Street, and saw something rolling down the street that quite cut the yellow kerseymeres out of all popular attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of Mulberry Street: Stories of Tenement Life in New York City Since I wrote How the Other Half Lives I have been asked many times upon what basis of experience, of fact, I built that ac count of life in New York tenements. These stories contain the answer. They are from the daily grist of the police hopper in Mul berry street, at which I have been grinding for twenty years. They are reprinted from the columns of my newspaper, and from the magazines as a contribution to the discussion of the lives and homes of the poor, which in recent years has done much to better their lot, and is yet to do much more when we have all come to understand each (fiher. In this discussion only facts are of value, and these stories are true. In the few instances in which I have taken the ordering of events into my own hands, it is chiefly their se quence with which I have interfered. The facts themselves remain as I found them. J. A. R.
