No additional infrastructure is required—the water systems are in place, naturally. But once the natural environment has been disrupted by human development, stormwater becomes an issue that requires intervention and ongoing management. Sustainable Stormwater Management, by leading expert Tom Liptan, provides landscape students and professionals with a green approach to landscape design. The hardworking book includes comprehensive information on how to design, install, and maintain a landscape for sustainable stormwater management. It addresses stormwater in the urban environment, relevant environmental and economic policies, and shares case studies of exemplary projects from around the world.

However, decentralized storm-water management systems are still under-utilized and acceptance among citizens and professionals is still lacking. Yet management of this issue will be essential for the sustainable development of cities in the future. Thus acceptance of the systems must be improved. The main question that needs to be answered is how can sustainable storm-water management be integrated with urban design in order to create safe, liveable, sustainable, and attractive cities? This manual, developed by the Hafen City University of Hamburg, provides an overview of a Water Sensitive Urban Design approach and creates principles for a successful strategy focused on the topics: Water Sensitivity, Aesthetics, Functionality, Usability, Public Perception and Acceptance, as well as Integrative Planning. It furthermore presents an international selection of case studies ranging from small scale (site level) up to large scale (city level), demonstrating the WSUD principles in the context of the temperate climates.

Book excerpt: As urbanisation progresses, urban environments have been confronted with many challenges, such as air pollution and stormwater disaster. The latter has been especially damaging in recent years, as vulnerable places suffer from inundating onslaughts of surface run-off following hurricanes and heavy rainfall. This book analyses the implementation of stormwater management practices. It presents the systematic theory behind these methods, and provides multiple case studies showing how drainage development can create a sustainable urban environment. SELLING POINTS: * Analyses methods of stormwater management * Suggests how these methods might be effectively applied 400 colour

The Martin County Community Redevelopment Agency strives to be a leader in Florida to encourage a built environment that reflects sustainability, ultimately resulting in a positive impact on the quality of life for its residents and continued opportunities for its businesses. The Stormwater Design Toolkit is a plain language document outlining best stormwater management practices which enhance both the built and natural environment in our region. As an educational tool, this book seeks to inspire audiences of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about stormwater, the best management practices, and innovative design strategies. The Toolkit demonstrates innovative engineering and best management practices that can be “modularized” to provide alternative approaches, urban strategies and innovative methodologies toward treating and managing stormwater. Various tools found within the Toolkit can be combined to create effective “treatment trains” designed to maintain and treat stormwater runoff. Each tool has the ability to be used as a piece of the development puzzle assisting a property owner to evaluate the capacity of a piece of land and the value of each tool's potential.Funding and support for this project is provided by South Florida Water Management District and a successful partnership with Martin County Redevelopment Agency.

The project concluded that the vegetated open spaces (including parks, greenways, and self-organizing conservation areas), right-of-ways, and parking lots of the Tumblin Creek watershed could form a connected LID network. Designers and developers can leam from the strategies discussed in this project to create sustainable urban environment with LID networks in the future.

Book excerpt: This book explains how with careful planning and design, the functions and performance of constructed wetlands can provide a huge range of benefits to humans and the environment. It documents the current designs and specifications for free water surface wetlands, horizontal and vertical subsurface flow wetlands, hybrid wetlands and bio retention basins; and explores how to plan, engineer, design and monitor these natural systems. Sections address resource management (landscape planning), technical issues (environmental engineering and botany), recreation and physical design (landscape architecture), and biological systems (ecology). Site and municipal scale strategies for flood management, storm-water treatment and green infrastructure are illustrated with case studies from the USA, Europe and China, which show how these principles have been put into practice. Written for upper level students and practitioners, this highly illustrated book provides designers with the tools they need to ensure constructed wetlands are sustainably created and well manage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates sustainable storm water management in an alpine case study in the eastern part of Innsbruck. Firstly the focus lies on the ecological properties of concepts such as Low Impact Development (LID), Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) especially with regard to the site conditions in the study area. Through a literature research no specific impediments which would hinder an potential implementation could be detected. However there are still general obstacles that discourage a more intensive utilization. In the practical part the Urban Biophysical Environments & Technologies Simulator (UrbanBEATS), a dedicated software for the planning of sustainable storm water management, is used to detect suitable types and locations for the elements of sustainable storm water management in the study area. In a further step the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is applied in order to assess the hydrological performance in quantitative terms. The performance during five different storm events are recorded and show a peak runoff reduction up to 4.26% in the total system, a peak fooding reduction up to 20.28% and a fooding volume reduction up to 17.49%.
