Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Persons and Places in Europe This suggests that the many things which young people need to know about the countries of the world, could be gained more easily from illustra tive stories than from condensed statements of bare facts. And numerous stories of this kind are to be found stored away in volumes uninteresting to most young readers and inaccessible to all but a few. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Hero Stories I have sometimes wondered if every one realized how startlingly independent and isolated a historical fact is to a child. It has happened before his remembrance, and that alone is enough to put it into another world. It is outside of his own little experience. It has appeared to him by no familiar road, but from the unknown regions of space. This is especially true in the study of the history of our own country. The wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on the map, the tale of the long voyage that preceded the discovery or the settlement, remove it from the European background which to older readers gives reality to the account of the beginnings and progress of civilization in the New World. Not only to bring together stories of some of the interesting events of European history, but to choose those events which have relation to the story of the United States, those which lead up to it and explain it; to picture scenes in the history of the chief nations of Europe and to make familiar the names of some of the prominent figures in those scenes; to show with what equipment of knowledge and tradition and achievement the founders of this country left their European homes; - in short, to give to the child in his degree an approximation to the background for the study of our country's history which a wide reading gives to the man - such is the object of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding the Worth-While in Europe For this reason I have little to say of the great cities which I have found very much like each other and like our own, but I do aim to show the way to some of those places in every land to see which will surely make of the trip a pleasant memory. Many of these are included in every well planned European tour, but some are not, and take my word for it and be not afraid to turn aside sometimes from the beaten track, for in the odd corners of the earth are often found its greatest beauties. Book excerpt: The cultural phenomenon of exhibiting non-European people in front of the European audiences in the 19th and 20th century was concentrated in the metropolises in the western part of the continent. Nevertheless, traveling ethnic troupes and temporary exhibitions of non-European humans took place also in territories located to the east of the Oder river and Austria. The contributors to this edited volume present practices of ethnographic shows in Russia, Poland, Czechia, Slovenia, Hungary, Germany, Romania, and Austria and discuss the reactions of local audiences. The essays offer critical arguments to rethink narratives of cultural encounters in the context of ethnic shows. By demonstrating the many ways in which the western models and customs were reshaped, developed, and contested in Central and Eastern European contexts, the authors argue that the dominant way of characterizing these performances as “human zoos” is too narrow. The contributors had to tackle the difficult task of finding traces other than faint copies of official press releases by the tour organizers. The original source material was drawn from local archives, museums, and newspapers of the discussed period. A unique feature of the volume is the rich amount of images that complement every single case study of ethnic shows.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern European History America 'has come to realize how ignorant she has been of Euro pean history and of European conditions and how heavily that ignorance has cost her. Not only her citizens but also her official leaders, high and low, have frequently revealed, during the appalling crises of the last five years, a lamentable and dangerous lack of comprehension of things vital to their own welfare and to the welfare of the world. As a nation we have successfully muddled through the great entanglement of our times, but it is not safe for nations, any more than for individuals, to muddle, since the issue may not always be happy, and is at any rate always purchased at too high a price. It ought to be clear even to the blind, after the events of the past five years, that the destinies of America and Europe are not dis connected but are inextricably intertwined and will remain so. Whether we like it or not makes no difference with the situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thunder Over Europe In writing a book of this description much informa tion not readily available to the public is required. To obtain it the author frequently must request from the governments concerned certain privileges and facilities for observation and investigation. Yet, by the acceptance of such privileges, and the social courtesies which usually accompany them, the author places himself under an implied obligation. Thus, if he criticizes the policy of a government which has aided him, or expresses opinions which are unpalatable to it, he is accused of ingratitude and bad taste. If, on the other hand, he seeks to retain the good-will of a government by ignoring or white washing unpleasant facts, he breaks faith with those who buy his books. The question arises then: should he de ceive his readers by refraining from criticism; or should he state the facts bluntly, as he sees them, regardless of whose toes he treads on? It has always seemed to me that an author's paramount obligation is to his readers. They buy his books on the assumption that he will tell them the unvarnished truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from We Four: Where We Went and What We Saw in Europe The Centennial Exposition - the glorious triumph of '76 and Philadelphia - was over; the immigration of country friends had ceased; the exodus of foreigners had commenced; and a dulness fell upon us like the plague of darkness that had fallen upon Egypt when their foreigners wanted to return to their own country. Suffering as we did from this terrible spirit of unrest, we looked around, seeking something to occupy our minds, and there, before us, was Utopia, - the most magnificent of cities, - the Paradise of the earth, as Monsieur A., with all a Frenchman's vivacity of appropriate gestures, said, "I kiss my hand to thee, Paris, la belle ville!" Yes! to quiet that perturbed spirit we decided to visit the Exposition to be held in Paris in 1878, and planned and anticipated and talked, while our friends looked scornfully on and concluded it would all end in plans, anticipation, and talk. But we patiently bided our time. "Who is meant by We?" I hear somebody ask. Allow us to introduce ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Modern Europe Outwardly, Europe of the Middle Ages presented a sad contrast to the magnificence of an Empire which was fading to remoteness year by year. The ugly towns did not attempt to hide their squalor, when dirt was such a natural condition of life that a knight would dwell boastfully upon his contempt for cleanliness, and a beauty display hands innocent of all proper tending. The dress of the people was ill-made and scanty, lacking the severe grace of the Roman toga. Furniture was rudely hewn from wood and placed on floors which were generally uneven and covered with straw instead of being paved with tessellated marble. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Political Pilgrim in Europe IN these days everybody is writing his memories. Dis appointed politicians decline to be forgotten. Successful and unsuccessful generals refuse to be neglected. People of all sorts and conditions insist on being heard. The most intimate affairs Of a life are laid bare in order to arrest public attention. Intolerable to most is the fear that the world will go past him. Nobody will willingly let himself die. This is the conclusion to which one is driven by the publication during the last two years Of a vast mass of autobiography. I am writing my own memoirs - two years Of them. It never would have occurred to me unaided that they could be of the slightest interest to anybody. Friends have listened to my stories with interest, and public meetings on several occasions have, by their silence and attention during the telling, Shown a' certain pleasure in their recital but only the insistence of a valued few has induced me to put some Of them into a book. These are not the most interesting experiences of my life. The four years Of the war could reveal much more, and better, if it were possible to write about those times. I doubt if I could - fully. The big experiences of life are seldom even spoken about, much less put down in black and white. Things happened during the war which are as sacred as the birth of a child or the death of a lover. The twelve years of agitation for woman suffrage, during which time I addressed more than two hundred public meetings a year in as many different towns, were packed full of incident, grave and gay, which a little quiet thought might dig out of the recesses Of the mind. They were gallant days, full of fine friendships. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
