Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Luther Burbank and His Plant School Educational methods have changed. Fifty years ago the education of children was on the theory that they were all naturally bad, while to - day it has dawned upon teachers and also the public that there are both good and bad ten dencies in every child, and that education should not at tempt to make children over according to rule. They should be led to love and cherish and cultivate the best tendencies, while the undesirable ones will fade from neglect and lack of encouragement. Mother Nature teaches many a lesson not to be learned in school. True education should pro mote a happy, development along the natural tendencies rather than provide punishments for not bending to arbi trary rules to be obeyed. To be sure, discipline is needed, but it should be along natural lines of development, rather than by the too arbitrary Thou shalt, and thou shalt not. A child should fully realize that greatly upon his own actions and character depend his own happiness or punish ment, thus fewer laws and rules would be necessary. Mod ern educational methods rely more upon a fundamental love of nature and of our fellow-travellers through life than upon force, punishment, and the ability to learn certain generally accepted forms of words and phrases. Download or read book The Garden of Invention written by Jane S. Smith and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wide-ranging and delightful history of celebrated plant breeder Luther Burbank and the business of farm and garden in early twentieth- century America At no other time in history has there been more curiosity or concern about the food we eat-and genetically modified foods, in particular, have become both pervasive and suspect. A century ago, however, Luther Burbank's blight-resistant potatoes, white blackberries, and plumcots-a plum-apricot hybrid-were celebrated as triumphs in the best tradition of American ingenuity and perseverance. In his experimental grounds in Santa Rosa, California, Burbank bred and cross-bred edible and ornamental plants-for both home gardens and commercial farms-until they were bigger, hardier, more beautiful, and more productive than ever before. A fascinating portrait of an American original, The Garden of Invention is also a colorful and engrossing tale of the intersection of gardening, science and business in the years between the Civil War and the Great Depression.

Book excerpt: Luther Burbank's 1911 Plant catalog This fascinating 1911 catalog from Luther Burbank's 'Experiment Farms' shows the results of his initial successes in modifying numerous fruits and other plants. It describes in great detail some of the most famous Burbank developments in horticulture; like his Abundance cherry and several types of Plumcots. It also list numerous decorative plants he either developed or popularized. If you are interested in Burbank's work this early plant catalog is a must-read! Luther Burbank was probably America's most famous botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his lifetime. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He even developed a spineless cactus (useful for cattle-feed) and the plumcot. Student's of Burbank would be wise to also examine the other books he wrote and co-wrote, on his methods and results, including his eight-volume How Plants Are Trained to Work for Man (1921), Harvest of the Years (with Wilbur Hall, 1927), Partner of Nature (1939), and Half-Hour Experiments with Plants.

Book Synopsis Half-Hour Experiments with Plants by : Luther Burbank
Download or read book Half-Hour Experiments with Plants written by Luther Burbank and published by Sierra Skies. This book was released on 1922-01-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardening tips from the" Plant Wizard" himself Luther Burbank was probably America's most famous botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his lifetime. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He developed a spineless cactus (useful for cattle-feed) and the plumcot. This booklet was probably produced by the publisher of his multi-volume masterpiece on plants and his specific gardening techniques as a way to sell a less expensive 'teaser' book to entice serious gardeners to buy his more expensive titles. It briefly details some of his famous plant inventions, and his background. It mostly covers his core experimental techniques for hand-pollenization and grafting that enabled him to do the hundreds and hundreds of experiments that led to his numerous plant discoveries. Burbank's most successful strains and varieties include the Shasta daisy, the fire poppy (note possible confusion with the California wildflower, Papaver californicum, which is also called a fire poppy), the "July Elberta" peach, the "Santa Rosa" plum, the "Flaming Gold" nectarine, the "Wickson" plum (named after agronomist Edward J. Wickson), the freestone peach, and the white blackberry. A natural genetic variant of the Burbank potato with russet-colored skin later became known as the Russet Burbank potato. This large, brown-skinned, white-fleshed potato has become the world's predominant potato in food processing. Student's of Burbank and his methods would be wise to also examine the other books he wrote and co-wrote, on his methods and results, including his eight-volume How Plants Are Trained to Work for Man (1921), Harvest of the Years (with Wilbur Hall, 1927), Partner of Nature (1939), and the 12-volume Luther Burbank: His Methods and Discoveries and Their Practical Application.
