Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Croesus, Cyrus and Babylon From Herodotus Professor Church's charming Stories from the ancient classics have established their right to a place among English classics, and their special fitness for the reading Of young pupils will be appreciated in every school where knowledge and culture have the preference above discipline and drill. Of his stories from Herodotus two are given without abridgment in this number, the story Of Croesus and the story of Cyrus, constituting about one half of the volume entitled Stories Of the East. In these stories, says Professor Church, I have kept as close to my original as I could, but I do not profess to have translated it. Book excerpt: The Greeks called him Cyrus, the Elder, due to his magnanimous efforts to bring the Middle East together and establish a solid administration and bureaucracy. To this day, he still inspires us thanks to his tolerance and eloquent ruling. He was a pioneer of human rights and laid out rules that spearheaded freedom and equality. Cyrus was recognized as a polytheist who favored worshipping many gods at a time. He turned from one god to another, according to his agenda and circumstances. He prayed to a god who could fulfill his desire and lead him to victory, which was noted during his rule in Babylonia. The former Babylonian ruler did not allow his people to worship their god and imposed hard labor, making life unbearable for thousands, but when Cyrus overtook the throne, he allowed Babylonia's people to follow their religion and worship their god, which increased their trust and admiration in Cyrus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Cyrus the Great and His Empire, author F.G.Ghamsari writes the story of equality, freedom, and the establishment of human rights (600-530BC). Two thousand five hundred years later, equality remains a conflict and justice does not exist. Unfairness is the way of life and persecution of innocents with a guilty conviction feeds the corrupted regimes of many countries. Black Lives Matter is indicative that even acclaimed the greatest nation ever, the United States, needs to improve the conditions of equality and human rights. The story began when the king ordered an infant to be put to death but by help of a shepherd, that child stayed alive and became a king, named Cyrus, who changed unjust rules. Violence against a defeated nation for rulers was haughty as Nebuchadnezzar leader of Babylon wrote, “I ordered one hundred thousand eyes pulled out...” He was proud to bring fifteen thousand Jew prisoners to Babylon. Cyrus came and averted these tyrannies. Whether we believe words of the Holy Bible or trace his actions, the result would be the same that Cyrus, “the Messiah”, was to carry on a “Divine Mission”, benefiting humanity forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his time, Cyrus was proclaimed the greatest leader of his era and, perhaps, of the ancient world. Much of what we know about him comes from pieces of the Old Testament, the Babylonian Chronicle, and the writings of ancient historians Herodotus and Xenophon. Through these writings from his friends and foes, we gather a view of this extraordinary man. Though he can be compared to Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan for his military accomplishments, Cyrus was also a master at diplomacy and tact. He welded together groups of people as disparate as Afghani tribesmen and Turkish farmers, creating the first world empire known in the Western world. His legacy in the Middle East lives on, for he was the leader who initiated the Persians' and Iranians' national destinies more than 2,000 years ago.

Book excerpt: This volume, dating from 1850, covers Cyrus the Great (d. 530 BC), founder of the Persian Empire, from his early years and ascension to the throne to the Oracles, the conquests of Lydia and Babylon, the restoration of the Jews, and more. Cyrus was the founder of the ancient Persian empire -- a monarchy, perhaps the most wealthy and magnificent which the world has ever seen. Of that strange and incomprehensible principle of human nature, under the influence of which vast masses of men, notwithstanding the universal instinct of aversion to control, combine, under certain circumstances, by millions and millions, to maintain, for many successive centuries, the representatives of some one great family in a condition of exalted, and absolute, and utterly irresponsible ascendency over themselves, while they toil for them, watch over them, submit to endless and most humiliating privations in their behalf, and commit, if commanded to do so, the most inexcusable and atrocious crimes to sustain the demigods they have thus made in their lofty estate, we have, in the case of this Persian monarchy, one of the most extraordinary exhibitions. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: Abbott is an excellent story teller and historian. Though short, his series on history serves as an excellent primer. (Patrick Trester) About the author: Jacob Abbott (November 14, 1803 - October 31, 1879) was an American writer of children's books. On November 14, 1803, Abbott was born in Hallowell, Maine to Jacob Abbott II and Betsey Chandler. He attended the Hallowell Academy. Abbott graduated from Bowdoin College in 1820. At some point during his years there, he supposedly added the second "t" to his surname, to avoid being "Jacob Abbot the 3rd" (although one source notes he did not actually begin signing his name with two t's until several years later). Abbott studied at Andover Theological Seminary in 1821, 1822, and 1824. He taught in Portland academy and was tutor in Amherst College during the next year. From 1825 to 1829 Abbott was professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Amherst College; was licensed to preach by the Hampshire Association in 1826; founded the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston in 1829, and was principal of it in 1829-1833; was pastor of Eliot Congregational Church (which he founded), at Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1834-1835; and was, with his brothers, a founder, and in 1843-1851 a principal of Abbott's Institute, and in 1845-1848 of the Mount Vernon School for Boys, in New York City. He was a prolific author, writing juvenile fiction, brief histories, biographies, religious books for the general reader, and a few works in popular science. He wrote 180 books and was a coauthor or editor of 31 more. He died in Farmington, Maine, where he had spent part of his time after 1839, and where his brother, Samuel Phillips Abbott, founded the Abbott School. His Rollo Books, such as Rollo at Play, Rollo in Europe, etc., are the best known of his writings, having as their chief characters a representative boy and his associates. In them Abbott did for one or two generations of young American readers a service not unlike that performed earlier, in England and America, by the authors of Evenings at Home, The History of Sandford and Merton, and The Parent's Assistant. To follow up his Rollo books, he wrote of Uncle George, using him to teach the young readers about ethics, geography, history, and science. He also wrote 22 volumes of biographical histories and a 10 volume set titled the Franconia Stories. (wikipedia.org)

Book excerpt: A defeated king stands on top of a pyre. His conqueror, the Persian ruler Cyrus, signals to his guards; they step forward and touch flaming torches to the dry wood. Croesus, once the wealthiest man of the ancient world, is to be burned alive. As he watches the flames catch, Croesus thinks back over his life. He remembers the time he asked the old Athenian philosopher, Solon, who was the happiest man in the world. Croesus used to think it was him. But then all his riches could not remove the spear from his dying elder son's chest; could not bring his mute younger son to speak; could not make him as wise as his own chief slave; could not bring his wife's love back; could not prevent his army from being torn apart and his kingdom lost. As the old philosopher had replied, a man's happiness can only be measured when he is dead. The first coils of smoke wrap around Croesus' neck like a noose...
