Book excerpt: In the United States at mid-century, in an era when there were few opportunities for women in general and even fewer for African American women, Jackie Ormes blazed a trail as a popular artist with the major black newspapers of the day. Jackie Ormes chronicles the life of this multiply talented, fascinating woman who became a successful commercial artist and cartoonist. Ormes's cartoon characters (including Torchy Brown, Candy, and Patty-Jo 'n' Ginger) delighted readers of newspapers such as the Pittsburgh Courier and Chicago Defender, and spawned other products, including fashionable paper dolls in the Sunday papers and a black doll with her own extensive and stylish wardrobe. Ormes was a member of Chicago's Black elite in the postwar era, and her social circle included the leading political figures and entertainers of the day. Her politics, which fell decidedly to the left and were apparent to even a casual reader of her cartoons and comic strips, eventually led to her investigation by the FBI. The book includes a generous selection of Ormes's cartoons and comic strips, which provide an invaluable glimpse into U.S. culture and history of the 1937-56 era as interpreted by Ormes. Her topics include racial segregation, cold war politics, educational equality, the atom bomb, and environmental pollution, among other pressing issues of the times. "I am so delighted to see an entire book about the great Jackie Ormes! This is a book that will appeal to multiple audiences: comics scholars, feminists, African Americans, and doll collectors. . . ." ---Trina Robbins, author of A Century of Women Cartoonists and The Great Women Cartoonists Nancy Goldstein became fascinated in the story of Jackie Ormes while doing research on the Patty-Jo Doll. She has published a number of articles on the history of dolls in the United States and is an avid collector.

Book excerpt: The definitive biography of the coaching legend who left his indelible handprint on the lives of his players, students, coaches, and family. With excerpts from Torchy's unpublished manuscript, "I Live by the Scoreboard," son, Bo, traces the steps in his wonderful journey. TORCHY CLARK is remembered as one of the most successful high school football and basketball coaches in the state of Wisconsin. His prized pupil at Appleton Xavier in both sports was legendary Rocky Bleier who won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Today, Torchy's Xavier legacy lives on as the on-campus gym bears his name, the Gene "Torchy" Clark Gym. In 1969, the Oshkosh, Wisconsin native and former Marquette University basketball player (1947-51), moved his family to Orlando, Florida to start the program at UCF. Torchy's magnificent run of success continued winning five Sunshine State Conference Championships (in eight years) and coaching the Knights to the 1978 NCAA Division II Final Four in Springfield, Missouri winning 24 consecutive games. He amassed a 274-89 record and is the school's all-time leader in wins. Torchy is an inaugural member of UCF's Athletic Hall of Fame (1998). The devoted husband to Claire and father of five was a man of deep, committed faith. His love for the Lord resonates throughout the chapters. Torchy's humble, down-to-earth, yet intense, demanding work ethic and teaching style created a "culture of excellence" in every program he led. With detailed research through meaningful and poignant interviews, the iconic figure comes to life. Torchy, who won 82 percent of his games in his career shares his secret to coaching mastery and explains his philosophy of the word "obligation" in a team setting. A champion of the underdog, Torchy Clark was truly a winner on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Read about this one-of-a-kind, humble coach and the humorous, fascinating, and compelling stories of his enduring legacy. The Torch Will Never Go Out

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

Book excerpt: Torchy is a comic strip and, primarily, a series of comic books featuring the ingenue Torchy Todd, created by the American "good girl art" cartoonist Bill Ward during 1944. The character was ranked 97th of the 2011 Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list. After Bill Ward's drafting into the World War II military, the artist created the tall, blond, busty ingenue Torchy Todd for the base newspaper of Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, where Ward was deployed. The comic strip in which she featured soon became syndicated to other Army newspapers worldwide. Torchy made her comic-book debut as main character of a backup feature of Quality Comics' Doll Man #8 (Spring 1946). Her feature was later published in all but two issues through #30 (September 1950), resuming in #35 (August 1951) through #47 (October 1953), as well as in Modern Comics #53–102 (Sept. 1946 – Oct. 1950). A solo series, Torchy, had six issues (Nov. 1949 – Sept. 1950), some with art by Gill Fox. Several Torchy stories, including some Fort Hamilton comic strips, were reprinted in Innovation Comics' 100-page, squarebound trade paperback Bill Ward's Torchy, The Blonde Bombshell #1 (Jan. 1992). Others have been reprinted in The Betty Pages #1 (1987); AC Comics anthology Good Girl Art Quarterly #1 (Summer 1990), #10 (Fall 1992), #11 (Winter 1993), and #14 (Winter 1994), and in AC's America's Greatest Comics #5 (circa 2003). Comic Images released a set of Torchy trading cards in 1994. Ward drew an original cover featuring Torchy for Robert M. Overstreet's annual book The Comic Book Price Guide (#8, 1978). Torchy Todd is a ditsy but goodhearted young blond woman who frequently finds herself in humorous, mildly risqué encounters with lustful men. Featuring the Good Girl Art of Bill Ward! The_Complete_Torchy feature from Quality's Modern Comics, Doll Man and Torchy Comics between September 1946 and October 1953. Torchy stories are from Doll Man #8, 9, 11, 12, 14-30, 35, 37; Modern Comics #53-102, Torchy Comics #1-6.
