Book Synopsis Through the Eye of Time by : Michael Aram Tarr
Download or read book Through the Eye of Time written by Michael Aram Tarr and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first visual history of Arunachal Pradesh, a state in northeast India bordering on Tibet/China, Burma and Bhutan. Based on archival and field research, it illustrates a century and a half of cultural change in this culturally diverse and little-known region of the Himalayas. More than 200 photographs, half archival and half contemporary, reveal that tribal cultures in this remote mountainous region have been continually reacting to external forces and initiating internal innovations. The Introduction places the archival photographs in their wider context, emphasising the complexity of the colonial encounter and uncovering personal stories behind many of the images. The sequence of photographs, juxtaposing the historical and the contemporary, shows us the uneven and sometimes confusing mixture of past and present that is emerging in Arunachal Pradesh.

Book Synopsis The Indian Diary of Vera Luboshinsky (1938-1945) by : Vera Luboshinsky
Download or read book The Indian Diary of Vera Luboshinsky (1938-1945) written by Vera Luboshinsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Diary of Vera Luboshinsky narrates life at the Indian princely court of Bhopal, during the 1940s. Vera was the daughter of Professor M. J. Herzenstein, a member of the State Duma in pre-revolutionary Russia, and married to Count Mark Luboshinsky. After the Bolshevik revolution, they emigrated to Czechoslovakia where they met Hamidullah Khan, Nawab of Bhopal, an important political figure during the last decades of the British Empire and India's fight for independence. Impressed by Mark Luboshinsky's managerial abilities, the Nawab invited him to come to India to manage his estates. The couple spent seven years in India (winter 1938 - winter 1945). They stayed in and around Bhopal taking part in palace business or travelling across India accompanying the Nawab's family on long journeys. The Diary is a unique and completely unknown text to the Anglophone world: a rich primary source for historians of India's princely states, providing an interesting and uncommon depiction of the Nawab, his family, acquaintances, associates, and more generally, the life of Indians and foreigners in India during World War II. With literary flair, Vera describes not only her life in India, but also her intimate relationship with the Begum and British residents of Bhopal as well as meetings with well-known people like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Fatima Jinnah, or Anandamayi Ma, and Paul Brunton. Importantly, the Diary also offers an extremely rare Eastern European female voice in late colonial India: a voice that both submits to and transgresses the Orientalist moods of its time.

Book excerpt: Joy, beauty, harmony, peace, love – all the real aspirations of human life: what if someone told you that you can start having them in your life, just doing what you love, being who you are (even and especially in this covid-altered world and reality)? What if someone told you that you are the hero of your life? This book is about the journey of an ordinary, nice, friendly-neighbourhood, wannabe-writer (aren’t most of us?!), gloriously embracing herself, doing some things she loves best – walking, being outdoors in Nature, and watching people without getting pulled into their dramas. And she has watched and walked her way to this debut book. Through her retelling of her journey, she tells you with conviction that You are the Hero in your life, and your journey is to claim it. "The Indian philosophical system views a Hero as “DhIra” ...The DhIra’s journey is to develop discrimination, viveka, and move towards the ultimate good, dharma, by transcending the personal self.” – Raghu Ananthanarayanan, Author of ‘Leadership Dharma – Arjuna, the Timeless Metaphor’ and Chief Mentor at Ritambhara.

Download or read book Insider Outsider written by Preeti Gill and published by Manjul Publishing. This book was released on with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling and untold bunch of short non-fiction, essays and poems that address the issues faced by the North-Eastern states of India. The North-East is a complex mosaic of multiple ethnicities, languages, religions and tribes. Apart from the groups that lay claim to indigeneity, there are minorities here from communities that are majorities elsewhere in the Indian mainland. These are people who are typically viewed as outsiders in the North-East, though they may have been living there for generations. Theirs is something of a mirror image of the experience of North-Easterners in mainland Indian cities such as Delhi, who have often had to deal with an outsider tag they did not relish, in the capital of a country against which many of the picturesque, remote hills and valleys they called home saw armed insurgencies. These shared twin experiences of being simultaneously insiders and outsiders is the subject of this anthology. There are scholarly essays as well as personal accounts and a few poems. The result is a delightful mix that opens up a window to a part of the world that is still little-known and poorly understood, whose experiences may shed some light on global issues of migration and citizenship as embodied in the lives of ordinary people.
