Book excerpt: Originally titled "L'Attaque du moulin", The Attack on the Mill is an 1889 novella by Émile Zola, translated by William Foster Apthorp. The aim of the novella was to promote the ideals of Naturalism, by treating the events of the Franco-Prussian War in a realistic and often unheroic way, in contrast to officially approved patriotic views of the war. Émile Zola (1840 – 1902) was an influential French novelist, the most important example of the literary school of naturalism, and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. More than half of Zola's novels were part of a set of 20 books collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Zola from the start at the age of 28 had thought of the complete layout of the series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable (that is, legitimate) Rougons and the disreputable (illegitimate) Macquarts for five generations.

Book excerpt: Abbe Mouret's Transgression Emile Zola - "Abbé Mouret's Transgression" (La Faute de l'Abbé Mouret), written in 1874, is perhaps the most powerful and poetic of all Zola's tales; it is that in which fantasy bears the greatest part, and in which "naturalisme" for a while disappears. The opening chapters describe a profligate and almost pagan village in Provence, and here "naturalisme" is at home, and in its proper place. The fifth novel in Zola's "Rougon-Macquart" series, "Abbé Mouret's Transgression" is the sequel to "The Conquest of Plassans," in which we are first introduced to the main character, the neurotic young priest Serge Mouret. He becomes the parish priest for the village of Artauds, where the villagers have no interest in religion. This test to his faith brings the priest to a nervous breakdown. As he begins to recover he finds that he has lost all memory of who or where he is. This novel pits the faith of religion against the universal desires of love and sexuality. Presented here in this edition is the "Suppressed English Edition" originally published in France in the late 19th century.

The happiness and peace of the protagonists is wrecked when Prussian soldiers enter their village. Zola excells himself in the in-depth portrayal of human emotions and feelings. Book excerpt: "Ashamed and traumatized by way of a forbidden love affair, ABBÉ MOURET'S TRANSGRESSION, penned through Émile Zola, unfolds within the secluded confines of a provincial French seminary. This novel, a part of Zola's "Rougon-Macquart" series, revolves around the conflicted existence of François Mouret, a young priest. He falls prey to the repressive environment of the seminary and succumbs to a forbidden passion for a fellow servant, Albine. Their clandestine courting blossoms amidst a lush, idyllic lawn, symbolizing nature's defiance against the group's strict moral code. As the story progresses, Mouret's transgressions intensify, culminating in a fervent include of sensual pleasures and a rejection of his religious calling. Zola explores the human psyche's complexities, delving deep into the outcomes of suppressing one's goals and the charm of surrendering to the primal instincts. The novel serves as an effective commentary on the war among the natural, instinctual self and the oppressive constraints of societal norms and religion. In ABBÉ MOURET'S TRANSGRESSION, Émile Zola masterfully combines vivid imagery with a profound exploration of human goals and their outcomes, imparting readers a concept-upsetting and fascinating narrative that challenges traditional morality and sheds mild on the darker corners of the human soul."

Book excerpt: La Débâcle is a novel by Émile Zola published in 1892, the penultimate in Les Rougon-Macquart series. The story is set against the background of the political and military events that ended the reign of Napoléon III and the Second Empire in 1870, in particular the Franco-Prussian War, the Battle of Sedan and the Paris Commune. The novel has been translated as The Debacle and The Downfall. The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing tried to read the novel in French in February 1896, through "intervals of rage", but without specifying what was the cause.

Viciously anticlerical in tone, it follows on from the horrific events at the end of La Conquête de Plassans, focussing this time on a remote Provençal backwater village. Unusually for Zola, the novel contains very few characters and locations, and the level of realist observation compared to outright fantasy is most uncharacteristic; however, the novel remains extraordinarily powerful and readable, and is considered one of Zola's most linguistically inventive and well-crafted works.

Book excerpt: Serge Mouret, the younger son of Francois Mouret, is ordained to the priesthood and appointed Cure of Les Artaud, a squalid village in Provence, to whose degenerate inhabitants he ministers. He has inherited the family taint of the Rougon-Macquarts, which in him takes the form of a morbid religious enthusiasm bordering on hysteria. Brain fever follows, and bodily recovery leaves the priest an amnesiac. Dr. Pascal Rougon, his uncle, hoping to save his reason, removes him from his accustomed surroundings and leaves him at the Paradou, the neglected demesne of a ruined mansion-house near Les Artaud, where he is nursed by Albine, niece of the caretaker. The Abbe falls in love with Albine, and, oblivious of his vows, breaks them...
