Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Sketches for the Young HE would be an inattentive reader of Mrs. Stowe's writings who did not see how irresistibly she would be drawn not only to the portraiture of children but to stories for their pleasure. She was distinctly a domestic woman and She was, moreover, so acutely sensible of the world of nature, loving its flowers, trees, and all animate and inani mate objects, that her active mind and intelligent sympathy could scarcely fail to seize upon this material when she came to write for the instruction or the diversion of that part of humanity which lives nearest the earth. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the phenomenal popularity of Sketches by Boz and The Pickwick Papers, Dickens produced two short volumes of Sketches of Young Gentlemen and Young Couples, in response to the appearance of Sketches of Young Ladies by 'Quiz'. Each volume purports to dissect the characteristics of familiar types such as 'The Bashful Young Gentleman', 'The Literary Young Lady', and 'The Couple who Coddle themselves'. Whimsical, satirical, witty and exuberant, the sketches ridicule the behaviour of their subjects with perfect comic effect, rendering Mr Whiffler, Mrs Chopper and their companions instantly recognizable. They offer intriguing glimpses of courtship rituals and relations between the sexes at the outset of the Victorian era, and fascinating evidence of a writer learning his craft and refining his style. This edition includes the original illustrations by Phiz, and an introduction that examines the appeal of the sketch, a literary genre in which Dickens excelled throughout his career.

Book excerpt: Almost all of us would agree that the experience of art is deeply rewarding. Why this is the case remains a puzzle; nor does it explain why many of us find works of art much more important than other sources of pleasure. Art and Knowledge argues that the experience of art is so rewarding because it can be an important source of knowledge about ourselves and our relation to each other and to the world. The view that art is a source of knowledge can be traced as far back as Aristotle and Horace. Artists as various as Tasso, Sidney, Henry James and Mendelssohn have believed that art contributes to knowledge. As attractive as this view may be, it has never been satisfactorily defended, either by artists or philosophers. Art and Knowledge reflects on the essence of art and argues that it ought to provide insight as well as pleasure. It argues that all the arts, including music, are importantly representational. This kind of representation is fundamentally different from that found in the sciences, but it can provide insights as important and profound as available from the sciences. Once we recognise that works of art can contribute to knowledge we can avoid thorough relativism about aesthetic value and we can be in a position to evaluate the avant-garde art of the past 100 years. Art and Knowledge is an exceptionally clear and interesting, as well as controversial, exploration of what art is and why it is valuable. It will be of interest to all philosophers of art, artists and art critics.

Book excerpt: A story inspired by artist Paul Klee's quote, "A line is a dot that went for a walk" WHAT PAUL MADE is a story about friendship, creativity and the innocence of a child's imagination. Readers will follow a young Paul on a visual journey turning a simple stroll into a adventure full of color, nature, curiosity and joy. Together with his dot, Paul returns home to discover his imagination created something wonderful. The story ends with an informative artist bio and a creative prompt bringing readers full circle into their own dot inspired creation! Famous for merging "inner" and "outer" worlds into his compositions, artist Paul Klee's artistic life began with a childhood filled of music, nature and poetry. As a young man, Klee decided that visual expression was the creative path that interested him the most. It was then that Paul began a lifelong adventure of creating and developing his own unique vision through artistic study, practice and experimentation. Throughout his career, Klee remained dedicated to color theory practice while he experimented with materials and Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Abstract Expressionist, Cubist and Futurist concepts. Paul Klee eventually became an instructor at the Bauhaus and Düsseldorf Academy and was a member of the artistic movement called the Die Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider).
