Book excerpt: After all, I think I had more real delight in the noble public parks and gardens of London than in palaces and cathedrals They were all wonders and novelties to me-for, to our misfortune and discredit, -we have nothing of the kind in our country. To see the poor little public squares in our towns and cities, where a few stunted trees seem huddled together, as though scared by the great red-faced houses that crowd so close upon them, one would think that we were sadly stinted and straitened for land, instead of being loosely scattered over a vast continent, many times larger than all Great Britain

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Legends of Travel and History, for Children The English government, with all its faults, has always been wise and generous toward the people in regard to their out-door comfort and pleasure. It does not mean that they shall be stifled for want of air, or cramped for room to exercise in. Everywhere over the kingdom, the traveller sees shady parks, pleasant gardens, breezy downs, and wide heaths, Open to the public, and as much for the enjoyment of the poor as the rich. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Land and Sea: Incidents of Travel, With Chats About History and Legends It is proposed by the author to have some chats with the young people on various subjects relating to history and the natural physical wonders of the world, introducing incidents of travel and several interesting tales translated from foreign languages. The chats will be arranged in chapters-h0ping by this system of short readings not to weary the young reader. The fragmentary letters were compiled from correspond ence with her children, relating to scenes and incidents coming under her observation during her sojourn abroad. There is no attempt at elaborate description, only salient points receiving attention, the object of the letters being to furnish in a familiar, conversational manner information most likely to interest or amuse the reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of Christopher Columbus for Little Children He remembered in his readings of the book of Marco Polo's travels that the people whom he had met were heathen who knew little about the dear God who had made the world, and nothing at all about His son, Christ Jesus, and as Christopher Columbus loved very dearly the Christian religion, his mind became filled with a longing to carry it across the great seas to this far-away coun try. The more he thought about it the more he wanted to go, until his whole life was filled with the one thought of how to get hold of some ships to prove that the earth was round, and that these far-away heathens could be reached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Travels You have here, my good friends, sundry moral and entertaining stories, invented by the monks of old, and used by them for amusement, as well as for instruction; from which the most celebrated poets, of our own and other lands, have condescended to draw their plots. The improvements and refinements of this age will naturally lead you to condemn as absurdities, many of the incidents with which these tales abound. Considering the knowledge of the present day, you are justified in so doing. But I pray you to bear in mind that few qualities are more dependent on time, than probability and improbability. When you read these tales, you must, for the time, retrace your steps to the age in which they were written; and though the tale may seem absurd to us of this day, yet, if it was calculated to impress the minds of those for whom it was invented, and to whom it was told, its merit was great, and therefore deserving of due praise. A giant or a magician was as probable to the people of the middle ages, as electricity to us. I pray you bear this in mind whilst you judge of these tales. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Other Lands When you have been playing in the hot sun, nothing tastes quite so good as a. Drink of cold water. Ahmed and Hada live in a country far, far hotter than ours. Yet when they are thirsty they can have only a sip of luke-warm water from a goat-skin. To reach the 'near est well, they must travel miles and miles over the burning sands. This hot dry land where they live is called Arabia. The sea touches it for four thousand miles, but fresh water is very, very scarce. Arabia has almost no rivers except some which run underground. In some parts of Arabia rain seldom falls, and even the ocean breezes that blow across this big neck of land in western Asia are warm and dry. You wonder why anyone chooses to live in such a place, but about five million people do live there. Some of the people live in villages in houses of sun-dried brick, but many have no home but a tent. Ahmed and Hada live in a tent made of goat-skin. It is broad and low and has two rooms, one for Hada and her mother, and the other for Ahmed and his father. Sometimes Ahmed's beautiful horse, Selim, wanders into the tent too, and makes himself quite at home. Ahmed's father Hassan, owns many horses. They are smaller than our horses, but beautifully formed. They can travel a long time with out needing a drink. The Arabs are very fond of their horses and treat them like members of the family. Ahmed does not always ride on his horse. Sometimes he rides on a camel. Although Father Hassan has no house, he is a rich man. He owns many camels besides his horses and flocks of sheep and goats. He is a chief, too, which means that he rules over his tribe. But how can Father Hassan's animals get enough to eat in so dry and sandy a country? This is the reason. Arabia is not all desert. There are green spots here and there where the cattle can graze. When they have eaten the grass in these places, the family must move on. The word Reynard means strong in counsel or keen-witted. It is this characteristic which has caused the fox to be the chief actor in folk-tales of all lands and to continue to live in lands occupied by men and dogs.
