Book excerpt: This report presents a complete analytic theory of the acousto-electric storage correlator, and experimental applications which demonstrate its versatility as a signal processor. Within the storage correlator, externally applied signals interact with the potentials associated with an acoustic surface wave traveling on a piezoelectric substrate. A spatially varying charge pattern is thereby stored in a linear array of semiconductor diodes. Application of a later reading signal yields the convolution or correlation of the reading signal and the stored charge pattern. A number of modes of both storing the charge pattern and reading it have been reported. The theory provides analytic predictions of the device performance for most of these modes of operation and most reported device structures. Experimental confirmation of the theory is given. Particular attention is paid to the transient characteristics of p(+)n diodes. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that their response is nearly equivalent to that of fast diodes (e.g., Schottky diodes) in this application. As a consequence, they may be charged quickly (in nanoseconds) and can retain their charge for long times (seconds).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correlation is a robust and general technique for pattern recognition and is used in many applications, such as automatic target recognition, biometric recognition and optical character recognition. The design, analysis and use of correlation pattern recognition algorithms requires background information, including linear systems theory, random variables and processes, matrix/vector methods, detection and estimation theory, digital signal processing and optical processing. This book provides a needed review of this diverse background material and develops the signal processing theory, the pattern recognition metrics, and the practical application know-how from basic premises. It shows both digital and optical implementations. It also contains technology presented by the team that developed it and includes case studies of significant interest, such as face and fingerprint recognition. Suitable for graduate students taking courses in pattern recognition theory, whilst reaching technical levels of interest to the professional practitioner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no respect for mere age in Science or Technology. Yet the cen tenary of the discovery, by the third Lord Rayleigh, that elastic waves can be guided by a surface, is memorable for the contradictions which it encompasses: Rayleigh's assessment of his classic 1885 paper as a rather minor mathematical development with a potential value only in seismology on the one hand; on the other the rediscovery of the subject in a totally that of electronic signal processing - which has led to its different fiel- explosive growth over the last twenty years. The new surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have proved to be per electronic components. Today almost all television receivers con vasive tain one or more SAW filters, sophisticated radars depend on SAW signal processing, and SAW devices have been incorporated in ultra-high perfor mance opto-electronic systems. With the objective of surveying these developments and attempting to predict those that can be foreseen, as well as marking the centenary of Lord Rayleigh's discovery, The Rank Prize Funds' Committee for Opto Electronics organised a symposium in London, in July 1985. It was held in the Royal Institution, London, where Rayleigh himself once worked and often lectured. The present volume is the tangible outcome of the symposium, In which international experts survey.ed their various fields, and presented the most exciting recent developments.

Book excerpt: Engineers, scientists, and technologists will find here, for the first time, a clear and comprehensive account of applications of ultrasonics in the field of process control. Using numerous examples of high-volume, low-cost applications, the author illustrates how the use of new transducer materials and designs, combined with microprocessor-based electronics, make technical and financial sense for concepts that only a few years ago might have been of interest only to academicians. Some of the important topics covered include coupling, acoustic isolation, transducer and sensor design, and signal detection in the presence of noise.

Book excerpt: Research in information, communications and signal processing has brought about new services, applications and functions in a large number of fields which include consumer electronics, biomedical devices and defence. These applications play an important role in advancing technologies to enhance human life in general. Recent Advances in Information, Communications and Signal Processing aims to give students, researchers, and engineers information pertaining to recent advances in these fields. In terms of research in signal processing topics, the two chapters included in this book have a strong emphasis on advances in algorithmic development in the biomedical, and human-computer interfaces domain areas. More specifically, the use of deep learning for placental maturity staging is discussed as well as the use of vibration analysis for localising impacts on surfaces for human-computer applications. In terms of communications signal processing, advances in new wireless communication such as NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access) and millimetre-wave antenna design for 5G cellular mobile radio, as well as innovations in LDPC (low density parity check code) decoding and networking coding, are featured.
