Book excerpt: The Cambridge Prehistory of the Bronze and Iron Age Mediterranean offers new insights into the material and social practices of many different Mediterranean peoples during the Bronze and Iron Ages, presenting in particular those features that both connect and distinguish them. Contributors discuss in depth a range of topics that motivate and structure Mediterranean archaeology today, including insularity and connectivity; mobility, migration, and colonization; hybridization and cultural encounters; materiality, memory, and identity; community and household; life and death; and ritual and ideology. The volume's broad coverage of different approaches and contemporary archaeological practices will help practitioners of Mediterranean archaeology to move the subject forward in new and dynamic ways. Together, the essays in this volume shed new light on the people, ideas, and materials that make up the world of Mediterranean archaeology today, beyond the borders that separate Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stone and Bronze Ages in Italy and Sicily For attempting to give to English readers an account of the prehistoric civilizations of Italy no apology can be needed: it has too long been the cry of our archaeologists that no such attempt has been made. For carrying out the task in a manner much less complete than might have been desired I can only plead that circumstances have required its completion within a short and limited time. Naturally a considerable part of the book consists in the presentation in an English form of work already done by Italian archaeologists. The appearance in the Bullettino di Paletnologia Italiana of Professor G. A. Colini's three magnificent brochures on the paleolithic, eneolithic and bronze ages respectively, marks a new era in the study of Italian prehistoric archaeology, and any later work on the same periods must in some sense be based upon them. I have therefore had not the slighest hesitation in adopting the main lines of Professor Colini's classification of the material of the three periods in question, at the same time making the necessary modifications required by later discoveries. The literature of the subject is very considerable and widely scattered. Those who require a short summary of the prehistoric periods in Italy will read Pigorini's article, Le pin antiche civilta dell' Italia. Those who are interested especially in the ethnological side of the question will find it fully dealt with in Modestov's book, and those who desire to see the material fully illustrated will consult Montelius's vast and, as yet, unfinished work. The lake-dwellings are well treated by Munro, though, owing to the rapid progress of discovery, some of his work is even now out of date. Book excerpt: This book takes an innovative approach to detecting regional groupings in peninsular Italy during the Late Bronze Age, a notoriously murky period of Italian prehistory. Applying social network analysis to the distributions of imports and other distinctive objects, Emma Blake reveals previously unrecognized exchange networks that are in some cases the precursors of the named peoples of the first millennium BC: the Etruscans, the Veneti, and others. In a series of regional case studies, she uses quantitative methods to both reconstruct and analyze the character of these early networks and posits that, through path dependence, the initial structure of the networks played a role in the success or failure of the groups occupying those same regions in later times. This book thus bridges the divide between Italian prehistory and the Classical period, and demonstrates that Italy's regionalism began far earlier than previously thought.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the European Bronze Age is a wide-ranging survey of a crucial period in prehistory during which many social, economic, and technological changes took place. Written by expert specialists in the field, the book provides coverage both of the themes that characterize the period, and of the specific developments that took place in the various countries of Europe. After an introduction and a discussion of chronology, successive chapters deal with settlement studies, burial analysis, hoards and hoarding, monumentality, rock art, cosmology, gender, and trade, as well as a series of articles on specific technologies and crafts (such as transport, metals, glass, salt, textiles, and weighing). The second half of the book covers each country in turn. From Ireland to Russia, Scandinavia to Sicily, every area is considered, and up to date information on important recent finds is discussed in detail. The book is the first to consider the whole of the European Bronze Age in both geographical and thematic terms, and will be the standard book on the subject for the foreseeable future.

European archaeology had made remarkable progress in the early twentieth century and this volume offers a clear impression of the understanding of European prehistory as a whole. Broken into six topics with additional prologue and epilogue, the text traces out the early foundations of human culture in Europe, covering the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages, as well as offering specific focuses on trade routes, and migration and conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bronze Age was a formative period in European history when the organisation of landscapes, settlements, and economy reached a new level of complexity. This book presents the first in-depth, comparative study of household economy and settlement in three micro-regions: the Mediterranean (Sicily), Central Europe (Hungary), and Northern Europe (South Scandinavia). The results are based on ten years of fieldwork in a similar method of documentation, and scientific analyses were used in each of the regional studies, making controlled comparisons possible. The new evidence demonstrates how differences in settlement organisation and household economies were counterbalanced by similarities in the organised use of the landscape in an economy dominated by the herding of large flocks of sheep and cattle. This book's innovative theoretical and methodological approaches will be of relevance to all researchers of landscape and settlement history.
