Book excerpt: Sharon Terry tells the story of her family's struggle to escape poverty at the end of the Great Depression and how she became a registered nurse, married, divorced, remarried happily for forty years, raised four successful sons and overcame two separate cancers and two heart attacks. She was the youngest member of a family of seven children. Her beloved father died when she was nine years old, leaving her mother desperately providing for and holding together her family. Sharon describes her small town life in southern Indiana and her life as a teenager on a large farm outside the small Indiana farm community of Poseyville. Leaving southern Indiana for Indianapolis, she attends nurses training, works hard and frolics some, becoming a registered nurse. She marries and then discovers the sorrows of her failed marriage and her difficulties and joys raising three young boys as a single parent. Then she entered her happy, forty year marriage to her second husband. They move to Carmel, Indiana, where she has her fourth son. She recounts how the new family bonded, how the sons were educated and given tough love, became successful, married and produced eight grandchildren. She describes how she coped with two cancers and two heart attacks, showing the same strength, endurance, courage and good nature that her mother earlier showed through years of near poverty. Finally, she introduces the grandchildren and shows that there will be a future and that it will be good.

Book Synopsis How Molecular Forces and Rotating Planets Create Life by : Jan Spitzer
Download or read book How Molecular Forces and Rotating Planets Create Life written by Jan Spitzer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reconceptualization of origins research that exploits a modern understanding of non-covalent molecular forces that stabilize living prokaryotic cells. Scientific research into the origins of life remains exploratory and speculative. Science has no definitive answer to the biggest questions--"What is life?" and "How did life begin on earth?" In this book, Jan Spitzer reconceptualizes origins research by exploiting a modern understanding of non-covalent molecular forces and covalent bond formation--a physicochemical approach propounded originally by Linus Pauling and Max Delbrück. Spitzer develops the Pauling-Delbrück premise as a physicochemical jigsaw puzzle that identifies key stages in life's emergence, from the formation of first oceans, tidal sediments, and proto-biofilms to progenotes, proto-cells and the first cellular organisms.
Download or read book Surfing Spaces written by Jon Anderson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of surfing involves highly-skilled humans gliding, sliding, or otherwise riding waves of energy as they pass through water. As this book argues, however, this act of surfing does not exist in isolation. It is defined by the cultures and geographies that synergize with it – by the places, ideas, images, and other representations which at once reflect, create, and commodify this spatial practice. This book innovatively explores the spaces of surf and surf-riding, informed specifically by the perspective of human geography. Based on a range of critical turns within the social sciences, the book explores the locations, relational sensibilities, and transformative nature of surfing spaces, and examines how the spatial practice has been scripted by dominant surfing cultures. The book details how prescriptive (b)orders of access, entitlement, and marginalization have been created, and how, with the advent of new craft, media, and ideals, they are being actively challenged to redefine surfing spaces in the twenty-first century.
