Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, there thrives a folk tradition with links to both the past and future. Colcha embroidery is a traditional Spanish colonial style of textile, bed covering, or wall hanging dating from the early nineteenth century. In the first book to consider this craft, Suzanne MacAulay provides a detailed account of this folk art tradition that is both old and constantly renewing itself, presenting a sensitive portrayal of artists and the contexts in which they live and work. Stitching Rites reveals how art, history, and memory interweave in a rich creative web. Based on archival research and on extensive interviews with artists, the book reveals the personal motivations of the embroiderers and their relationships with their work, with each other, with their community, and with outsiders. Through stitchers like Josephine Lobato and the San Luis Ladies Sewing Circle, MacAulay shows how colcha creation is bound up in a perpetual round of cultural commentary and self-reflection. MacAulay includes detailed descriptions of changes in stitching techniques, themes, and styles to show the impact of a wide range of outside influences on the lives of the artists and on the art form. She also provides a discussion of New Mexican Carson colchas and their place in the collector market. By focusing on the individual creative act, she shows how colcha embroidery is used to record how a stitcher's memories of her life are intertwined with the history of her community. Through this picture of a community of embroiderers, MacAulay helps us to understand their stitching rites and sheds new light on the relationship between Hispanic and Anglo cultures.

Book excerpt: Provides an up-to-date overview of the Polish and international experience in the area of thin coal seam mining with an emphasis on implementation of the plow technology in mining. The implementation of the plow technology in Poland is performed by young engineers for whom the automated extraction system presents itself as a great challenge showing the direction of future developments: a production mining face manned by a skeleton crew, fully utilizing the potential offered by the information technology. They create new ways and means of running the production processes, which are successfully used together with the new generation plows. Successive generations of young mining engineers entering their careers are equipped with a new type of ability and, most of all, awareness which is characterized by a new understanding of reality, in which "real" is what is on the screen. They are the guarantee that this direction of research and the drive towards minimizing human involvement in the underground production chores will receive increasing focus and will remain the area of development. The experiences to-date of three mines (KWK Zofiówka, KWK Jas-Mos, and LW Bogdanka SA) show that there is a real potential for the Polish companies to join in the research aimed at developing new plow installations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wound and the Stitch traces a history of imagery and language centered on the concept of woundedness and the stitching together of fragmented selves. Focusing particularly on California and its historical violences against Chicanx bodies, Loretta Victoria Ramirez argues that woundedness has become a ubiquitous and significant form of Chicanx self-representation, especially in late twentieth-century print media and art. Ramirez maps a genealogy of the female body from late medieval Iberian devotional sculptures to contemporary strategies of self-representation. By doing so, she shows how wounds—metaphorical, physical, historical, and linguistic—are inherited and manifested as ongoing violations of the body and othered forms of identity. Beyond simply exposing these wounds, however, Ramirez also shows us how they can be healed—or rather stitched. Drawing on Mesoamerican concepts of securing stability during lived turmoil, or nepantla, Ramirez investigates how creators such as Cherríe Moraga, Renee Tajima-Peña, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, and Amalia Mesa-Bains repurpose the concept of woundedness to advocate for redress and offer delicate, ephemeral moments of healing. Positioning woundedness as a potent method to express Chicanx realities and transform the self from one that is wounded to one that is stitched, this book emphasizes the necessity of acknowledgment and ethical restitution for colonial legacies. It will be valued by scholars and students interested in the history of rhetorics, twentieth-century Chicanx art, and Latinx studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apparel and textile industries have always been at the mercy of rapidly changing styles and fickle customers who want the latest designs while they are still in fashion. The result for these businesses, often forced to forecast sales and order from suppliers with scant information about volatile demand, is a history of stock shortages, high inventories, and costly markdowns. But, as the authors explain in A Stitch in Time, technological advances in the 1980s paved the way for a new concept in retailing--lean retailing. Pioneered by companies like WAL-MART, lean retailing has reshaped the way that products are ordered, virtually eliminating delays from distribution center to sales rack by drawing on sales data captured electronically at the checkout counter. Armed with up-to-the-minute data about colors, sizes, styles, and geographic sales, apparel and textile companies now must be able to respond rapidly to real-time orders efficiently based on new approaches to distributing merchandise, forecasting, planning, organizing production, and managing supplier relations. A Stitch in Time shows that even in the face of burgeoning product proliferation, companies that successfully adapt to the world of lean retailing can reduce inventory risk, reduce costs, and increase profitability while improving their responsiveness to the ever-changing tastes of customers. Based on the success of these practices in the apparel industry, lean retailing practices are propagating through a growing number of consumer product industries. A richly detailed and resonant account, A Stitch in Time brilliantly captures both the history and future of the retail-apparel-textile channel and offers bold insights on the changes and challenges facing retailers and manufacturers in all segments of our rapidly changing economy.

Book excerpt: Be creative, de-stress and brighten up your world with these twenty-four embroidery projects for crafters of all skill levels. With projects ranging from things you could complete in an afternoon to others that you can take your time over, enjoy every step of the making process as you focus on feeling good through being creative. The finished makes will bring colour and joy to your home, workspace and wardrobe. The projects in this book allow you to craft your creative time by selecting makes according to timescale. Choose one of the “crafternoon makes” if you want that sense of joy at finishing something, a “medium makes” project for the days where you have a little more time for crafting, or for something to really take your time over you could stitch one of the longer “pick me up” projects. Each project includes step-by-step instructions, beautiful photos and inspirational ideas for how to make each project your own. So take time to be creative with this colourful, feel-good craft book! Praise for Colourful Fun Embroidery “With clear, precise instructions, Celia's book on creative embroidery is just what is needed!” —Books Monthly (UK) “Fulfilling a tall order for embroidery that generates glee, UK crafter-author Albans tries her hardest to infuse some lightness of embroidery into daily life with bright colors, perky sayings, and displayable projects. Her two dozen projects range from brooches and necklaces to banners and patchwork, each indicating the time needed to finish. Every design supports a beginning needleworker. . . . And though some projects have a very British feel (such as buntings to top a cake), many will appeal to U.S. tastes. A stitch in time might provoke some smiles. Other appendixes include embroidery materials, embroidery stitch guide, template information, and craft suppliers (primarily in the UK).” —Booklist
