Book excerpt: With the implementation of intense, short pulsed light sources throughout the last years, the powerful technique of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) became feasible for a wide range of experiments within femtosecond dynamics in correlated materials and molecules. In this thesis I investigate the potential to bring RIXS into the fluence regime of nonlinear X-ray-matter interactions, especially focusing on the impact of stimulated scattering on RIXS in transition metal systems in a transmission spectroscopy geometry around transition metal L-edges. After presenting the RIXS toolbox and the capabilities of free electron laser light sources for ultrafast intense X-ray experiments, the thesis explores an experiment designed to understand the impact of stimulated scattering on diffraction and direct beam transmission spectroscopy on a CoPd multilayer system. The experiments require short X-ray pulses that can only be generated at free electron lasers (FEL). Here the pulses are not only short, but also very intense, which opens ...

Particular attention is paid to studies of Nd2CuO4. A charge transfer excitation is observed when the incident photon energy is tuned in the vicinity of the copper K-edge. It is shown that the presence of resonant enhancements is controlled by the polarization dependence of the excitation process and by the overlap between a given intermediate state and the particular excitation being studied. This latter observation has shed light on the non-local effects present in certain intermediate states.

Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the dynamics of many-electron systems is of fundamental importance to all disciplines of condensed matter physics. A very effective access to electron dynamics is offered by inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) spectroscopy. The double differential scattering cross section for IXS is directly related to the time-dependent two-particle density correlation function, and, for large momentum and energy transfer (Compton limit) to the electron momentum distribution. Moreover, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) enables the study of electron dynamics via electronic excitations in a very selective manner (e.g. selectively spin, crystal momentum, or symmetry), so that other methods are efficaciously complemented. The progress of IXS spectroscopy is intimately related to the growing range of applications of synchrotron radiation. The aim of the book is to provide the growing community of researchers with accounts of experimental methods, instrumentation, and data analysis of IXS, with representative examples of successful applications, and with the theoretical framework for interpretations of the measurements.

Book excerpt: The intriguing physical properties presented in some complex oxides of transition metals draw attention not only in fundamental research but also in applications, for instance, superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, multiferroicity. The strong electronic correlation is at the origin of these behaviours. The thesis is a contribution to both the experimental effort to determine the electronic structure of strongly correlated systems and the critical assesment of the theoretical models describing them. Experimentally, the work of is devoted to the investigations of the low-energy excitations (d-d excitations, charge transfer, ...) of the ground state by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The experiments have been performed on the SEXTANTS beamline of SOLEIL synchrotron (France) using the high resolving power AERHA spectrometer. The analysis of the data has been focused on the determination of the the crystal field of the transition metal involved using the crystal field multiplets theory. Two systems have been investigated: the multiferroics RMnO3 (R = Tb, Dy) and the ferromagnetic Mott insulator Lu2V2O7.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides are presently the focus of much attention in condensed matter physics because of the diverse phenomena exhibited by these materials. Examples include antiferromagnetism, superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The origin of these phenomena lies in the strong electron correlations present in these materials which place them between the well understood limits of band insulators and simple metals. The presence of these correlations makes these materials hard to handle theoretically, and there is a need for more detailed experimental work, in particular in regard to the electronic structure and excitations.

Book excerpt: In this thesis chemical and epitaxial degrees of freedom are used to manipulate charge and spin ordering phenomena in two families of transition metal oxides, while taking advantage of state-of-the-art resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) methods to characterize their microscopic origin in a comprehensive manner. First, the relationship of charge density wave order to both magnetism and the "pseudogap" phenomenon is systematically examined as a function of charge-carrier doping and isovalent chemical substitution in single crystals of a copper oxide high-temperature superconductor. Then, in copper oxide thin films, an unusual three-dimensionally long-range-ordered charge density wave state is discovered, which persists to much higher temperatures than charge-ordered states in other high-temperature superconductors. By combining crystallographic and spectroscopic measurements, the origin of this phenomenon is traced to the epitaxial relationship with the underlying substrate. This discovery opens new perspectives for the investigation of charge order and its influence on the electronic properties of the cuprates. In a separate set of RXS experiments on superlattices with alternating nickel and dysprosium oxides, several temperature- and magnetic-field-induced magnetic phase transitions are discovered. These observations are explained in a model based on transfer of magnetic order and magneto-crystalline anisotropy between the Ni and Dy subsystems, thus establishing a novel model system for the interplay between transition-metal and rare-earth magnetism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key ideas in the condensed matter physics at a low energy scale is to treat an interacting many-body electron system in terms of weakly interacting emergent particles, namely elementary excitations. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has emerged as a powerful tool to study elementary excitations, thanks to the exciting instrumentation improvement and the advent of X-ray synchrotron radiation facilities. By tuning the incident X-ray photon energy to the resonance condition of a specific element, RIXS can resonantly enhance the scattering cross section between the incident photon and the elementary excitation in the material, enabling element-specific measurements. In this dissertation, we investigated magnetic excitations in the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films. Besides a similar crystal structure, the infinite-layer nickelate is nominally isoelectronic to the high temperature cuprate superconductors. At this early stage, it is important to experimentally study the similarities and differences between cuprates and nickelates, particularly the respective electronic and magnetic structures. Here, by utilizing the high-resolution RIXS, we found that the parent compound of the infinite-layer nickelate is not a charge-transfer material, like cuprates. Instead, it is probably closer to a Mott compound with an additional coupling with rare-earth metallic states. Furthermore, we also found a branch of dispersive magnetic excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV in the parent compound nickelates. Although these modes are significantly damped, they are reminiscent of the spin-wave of strongly coupled, anti-ferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice. Upon doping, the spectral weight and energy decrease slightly, while the modes become overdamped. The dispersion, doping dependence, damping effect of the magnetic excitation, and the added complexity due to the presence of the rare-earth metallic pockets, together with its comparison with the magnetic excitation in cuprates, will be discussed.
