Book excerpt: Improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, and help mitigate climate change. Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

And though Haylie had been to murder scenes before, as a Texas Ranger. But it had been years and she forgot how overwhelming the smell could be. Haylie couldn't imagine losing a child. Not for the first time in her career, Haylie felt like breaking down and crying. She knew that it could've just as easily happened to her children. But she couldn't imagine it. It hurt too much. It seems like a great day for a family picnic when Haylie, the sheriff, gets a call that changes everything. Lake Alamo, a town that hasn't seen a murder since in twenty years (to the day) is suddenly shaken by the news that one of their own has been found dead in her home. Though she's on vacation, Haylie leaves to start investigating, though it only seems to lead to dead ends. Feeling it's their duty to help their sister and save the town they love, Rachel and Kayla chip in to bring the murderer to justice. The sisters have to work together to find the killer, someone who has been living right under their noses the whole time, and they have to do it before it's too late.

Book excerpt: IN A PEACEFUL NEW ENGLAND VILLAGE, TERROR LIES LURKING BENEATH THE SURFACE... Phillipsport, Maine seems to be the perfect place for novelist Rick Sychek to settle in to. A small seaport village, it is quaint and peaceful, just what Rick needs in order to write his next novel. On his drive into town Rick runs over what appears to be a large crab in the road. About the size of a common house cat and sporting a segmented tail that resembles the stinger of a scorpion, it is unlike any crustacean he or anybody else in town has seen before. Within the next day the town is literally besieged by hundreds of the creatures -- which Rick calls Clickers due to the sound their claws make as the click together -- as they ravage and plunder anything unlucky enough to get in their way. NOW THE WAVE OF TERROR BEGINS... Hundreds of Clickers literally beach themselves in a wave of terror that ends in horror and death for some....but it brings the town together collectively in a fight to drive the creatures back. Rick joins his new friends in fighting the creatures off only to discover that the Clickers aren't merely here to ravage and pillage. They are being driven up on the shores of this New England by instinct. For something is hunting the Clickers. Something far worse than any of them could ever imagine...

Book excerpt: The acclaimed travel writer chronicles a year of train travel across China in a revealing travelogue that “gives the reader much to relish and think about” (Publishers Weekly). The author of the train travel classics The Great Railway Bazaar and The Old Patagonian Express, takes to the rails once again in this account of his epic journey through China. The always irascible, infectiously curious author “is in top form as he describes the barren deserts of Mongolia and Xinjiang, the ice forests of Manchuria and the dry hills of Tibet. He captures their otherworldly, haunting appearances perfectly. He is also right on target when he talks about the ugliness of China's poorly planned, hastily built cities” (Mark Salzman, The New York Times). Theroux hops aboard a train as part of a tour group in London and sets out for China's border. He then spends a year traversing the country, where he pieces together a fascinating snapshot of a unique moment in history. From sweeping and desolate natural landscapes to the dense metropolises of Shanghai, Beijing, and Canton, Theroux offers an unforgettable portrait of a magnificent land and an extraordinary people.

But even in quiet Nordic towns, strange things can happen in the dead of winter. Eager to retire, insurance company owner "Pinky" Hofstead had grand plans to announce the appointment of his new president at an all-employee winter weekend retreat. But after a night of snowmobiling in sub-zero weather, Hofstead is found the next day—as cold and stiff as a piece of dried lutefisk. Puzzled by how Hofstead's body could be lying beneath a concrete loon with his snowmobile abandoned fifty feet away, Otter County Sheriff Palmer Knutson and his upstart rookie detective suspect that this is more than just an accident. With possible motives of greed, ambition, and jealousy, could any of the four employees or their spouses be cold-blooded enough to ice the boss? Uffda! There's a murderous chill in the air!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings a variety of new approaches and contexts to modem and contemporary women's writing. Contributors include both new and well-established scholars from Europe, Australia, the USA , and the Caribbean. Their essays draw on, adapt, and challenge anthropological perspectives on rites of passage derived from the work of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. Collectively, the essays suggest that women's writing and women's experiences from diverse cultures go beyond any straightforward notion of a threefold structure of separation, transition, and incorporation. Some essays include discussion of traditional rites of passage such as birth, motherhood, marriage, death, and bereavement; others are interested in exploring less traditional, more fluid, and/or problematic rites such as abortion, living with HI V/AIDS, and coming into political consciousness. Contributors seek ways of linking writing on rites of passage to feminist, postcolonial, and psychoanalytic theories which foreground margins, borders, and the outsider. The three opening essays explore the work of the Zimbabwean writer Yvonne Vera, whose groundbreaking work explored taboo subjects such as infanticide and incest. A wide range of other essays focus on writers from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. including Jean Rhys, Bharati Mukherjee, Arundhati Roy, Jean Arasanayagam, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, and Eva Sallis. Rites of Passage in Postcolonial Women's Writing will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of postcolonial and modern and contemporary women's writing, and to students on literature and women's studies courses who want to study women's writing from a cross-cultural perspective and from different theoretical positions. Pauline Dodgson-Katiyo is Head of Humanities at Sheffield Hallam University. Her research focus is on African literature (particularly Zimbabwean), contemporary women's writing, and postcolonial cinemas. Gina Wisker is Professor of Higher Education and Contemporary Literature at the University of Brighton, where she teaches literature, is the head of the centre for learning and teaching, and pursues her research interests in postcolonial women's writing.

Book excerpt: A special gift for the holiday season—a rumination on Christmas as conceived by Robert B. Parker. “Brann does a seamless job…Diehard Parker fans will be delighted.” —Publishers Weekly It’s December in Boston, and Spenser is busy planning the menu for Christmas dinner when he’s confronted in his office by a young boy named Slide. Homeless and alone, Slide has found refuge with an organization named Street Business, which gives shelter and seeks job opportunities for the homeless and lost. Slide’s mentor, Jackie Alvarez, is being threatened, and Street Business is in danger of losing its tenuous foothold in the community, turning Slide and many others like him back on the street. But it’s not a simple case of intimidation—Spenser, aided by Hawk, finds a trail that leads to a dangerous drug kingpin, whose hold on the at-risk community Street Business serves threatens not just the boys’ safety and security, but their lives as well. Unfinished at the time of his death, Silent Night was completed by Parker’s longtime agent, whose decades-long association with Parker’s work gives her unique insight and perspective to his voice and storytelling style. Her contribution also speaks volumes about their enduring friendship.

Book excerpt: A Game of Chances Two men, too many secrets, and even more situations trying to keep them apart. Can love really conquer all? A meeting brought on by seeming coincidence throws Marcus and Tanner together. After becoming friends, certain truths are revealed, leading to feelings of betrayal as well as a degree of danger. Tanner has more secrets than one man ever should, not the least of which is that he's an operative for a gray-ops organisation that's something of a family business. Sharing even that much information could kill more than just his friendship with Marcus. When one misstep on Tanner's part plants possible danger in Marcus' lap, he does what he needs to do. Marcus doesn't know that Tanner is after the man Marcus used to date, but he for damned sure finds out, and that's just the start of things. When a computer disc and men with guns come into play, Marcus has some decisions to make. Like whether he can forgive Tanner for making him love a lie... and how far Marcus is willing to go to secure his own happiness. A Game of Skills A lot of things happen within the confines of a grey-ops organisation whose services are offered to the highest bidder. Sometimes even love, though that may well be easier said than done. The last thing Simon is expecting when his latest Game goes thoroughly wrong is to be rescued by a man he doesn't know and an oddly intelligent child, but that's exactly what happens. He's pulled from the proverbial fire by the strange duo. That would have been fine if he hadn't developed some unexpected and unwelcome attraction to the man, Morgan. Morgan's been running for years, trying to keep his best friend, Ellie's, child from the clutches of what he's sure is a group Rico wants no part of. Helping Simon is barely tolerable. Developing feelings for the secretive man is less so. Between Simon's organisation, the Farmingdale Gentleman's Club, and whoever's after Rico, Morgan's pretty sure that he and Rico are screwed. When things come to a head, he has to make some hard choices, which might or might not involve Simon. A Game of Hearts What's the difference between a fling and a relationship? Three spies are about to find out. Morgan and Simon are settled and happy together, or as much as they can be given their high-octane positions as operatives of the Farmingdale Gentleman's Club. So why are they both having unexpected longings and thoughts about their teammate, River? Sure, he's gorgeous but he's a bit of a player, and neither Simon nor Morgan are willing to risk their relationship on a fling. Try as he might, River can't seem to resist his attraction to his team leader, Simon, or Simon's mate, Morgan. He also can't quite let himself intrude on their relationship until he receives a rather unique offer from the two men. It's a fairly casual arrangement, but when things get rocky on a Game in Prague, things come to a head. Can three very different men find a way to make love work? Easier said than done, especially when the past seems determined to complicate the future. A Game of Schemes What's to happen when a spy and his mark cross paths? Things get wild. When the two turn out to be old friends, all bets are off. The life of a grey-ops operative for a semi-secret organisation isn't always about guns and ticking bombs. Sometimes it's about something as simple as a snatch-and-grab. Sometimes it's as complex as discovering love where it's least expected. Sully's been living the life with the Farmingdale Gentleman's Club for five long years. After the Club saved him from a future as a cripple, he owes them. That's not to say that he doesn't love his work, because he does. Sometimes more than others. When an unexpected Game intrudes on Sully's holiday t

Book excerpt: "Told through interlocking narratives, this poignant debut novel captures a year in the life of a small Vermont town—but don’t let the pastoral locale fool you; this book is anything but sleepy. Moving effortlessly from the steamy to the heartbreaking, the novel handles themes such as poverty, first love, drug abuse, unplanned pregnancy, and lust with refreshing nuance." —Oprah Daily A vivid and moving portrayal of the intricate web of relations and fate in a small New England town, told with interlocking storylines in a unique and mesmerizing voice of uncommon power in this debut novel. May has arrived in the tiny hamlet of Glenville, Vermont, bringing with it currents of rejuvenation and rebirth. For 3 families, though, the year ahead will prove to be a roller coaster of life-changing events, promises, and tragedies. Liquid, Fragile, Perishable unspools via a chorus of unforgettable voices: an old-school Christian beekeeping family and newly transplanted New Yorkers; a trio of teenage girls and a deeply rooted family of ne’er-do-wells; and one woman who just wants to live alone in the woods. The shifting set of relations among the citizens of this community encompasses teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, poverty—and a cavalcade of thwarted dreams, young love in bloom, and poignant missed connections. This powerful debut is a subtle and beautiful story about the interlocking relationships among the residents of a small town out of Sherwood Anderson or Thornton Wilder—but with a very contemporary set of problems ... By turns sexy, shocking, and wistful, this coruscating debut conveys the hopes, the sadness, and the secrets of a whole great world. Told in a vivid style of complete distinction, the novel has a magic and a momentum all its own, giving a look into the aching, silent heart of America.

Book excerpt: When Anthony found Flo dead, locked overnight in one of the reading rooms of the university library, he knew it must have something to do with Mary Prestosa, a fourth-year graduating Philosophy student whom they had been investigating. Mary, who surprised her roommate one night by suddenly standing up from her bed, throwing the windows open, and jumping down headfirst to the dormitory grounds below. Mary, whose memory marked the trail of mysterious deaths and bizarre occurrences that followed her own fateful fall: the fifth-year Computer Engineering student who prowled the campus on all fours, thirsty for blood, believing he was a wolf; the revelation of an all-girls satanic cult; the demonic possession of a fourth-year student from the Department of Psychology; and now-Flo, dead. The students traced it all to Mary. They believed Mary didn't commit suicide. They believed Mary tapped into something dark, and released it, and was consumed. And Anthony was determined to pry out the truth.
