We learn the truth about what drives some of these characters to live on the edge of the law and to go as far as they do to get what they want. For some, it is merely a matter of gaining respect or boosting their reputations, for others it is a case of striving for survival. Each of these elite characters is different, and each has a unique tale to tell, yet all of them have one thing in common - they inhabit a world that few of us would dare to venture into.

Book excerpt: Bouncers. Reviled, feared and admired in equal measure, yet rarely are their voices heard. What they can't tell their customers, their bosses or the cops, they have now told Julian Davies and Terry Currie. From the nervous first-nighter to the hardened veteran, here are the unforgettable voices of dozens of door staff from across the UK and abroad: the drugs, girls and gangs; the door wars, reprisals and straighteners; the sex-mad groupies and broken marriages; the hardmen, nutters, cowards and bullies; the tragedies, the camaraderie and the grim humour of a dangerous, thankless job. With tales from the bow tie-and-knuckleduster days of the Sixties to the huge security firms of today, BOUNCERS tells it like it is working the doors of pub and club land.

Book excerpt: This book provides a critical engagement with the idea of the ‘security society’ which has been the focus of so much attention in criminology and the social sciences more broadly. ‘Security’ has been argued to constitute a new mode of social ordering, displacing the ‘disciplinary society’ that Foucault saw as characteristic of the liberal era. He saw a ‘control society’ (or ‘risk society’) characteristic of Neo-Liberalism, in which the deviant behaviour of particular individuals, as less important than general attempts to offset risk and reduce harm. Dodsworth argues that much of this literature is extraordinarily present-ist in orientation, denying the long history of attempts to mitigate risk, prevent harm and manage security which have always been a part of the government of order. This book develops a ‘critical history’ of security: a thematic analysis of debates about security and aspects of the security society which puts contemporary arguments and practices in dialogue with the texts and practices of the past. In doing so the book develops a cultural analysis of the meanings of security and the way these meanings have been articulated in particular practical contexts in order to understand how the promise of security has so effectively captured the imagination and channeled the effective engagement of people throughout the modern period.

Told with humour and insight, it looks back across the decades at the life of this close knit, notorious East End family. Maureen Flanagan, a then 20 year old hairdresser started visiting the Kray family home in Vallance Road each week to give the twins’ mother, Violet, her weekly shampoo and set. Over the cups of tea and the rollers and hairpins, Violet began to confide in ‘Flan’ about her life, her incredible pride in her twins, the celebrities who visited her at their humble East End home - and her troubled relationship with her husband.
