Book Synopsis Thomas Salmon: An essay to the advancement of musick and the ensuing controversy, 1672-3 by : Benjamin Wardhaugh
Download or read book Thomas Salmon: An essay to the advancement of musick and the ensuing controversy, 1672-3 written by Benjamin Wardhaugh and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Salmon (1647-1706) is remembered today for the fury with which Matthew Locke greeted his first foray into musical writing, the Essay to the Advancement of Musick (1672), and the near-farcical level to which the subsequent pamphlet dispute quickly descended. Beneath the unedifying invective employed by Salmon, Locke and their supporters however, serious and novel statements were being made about what constituted musical knowledge and what was the proper way to acquire it. This volume is the first published scholarly edition of Salmon's writings on notation, previously available only in microfilm and online facsimiles.

Book Synopsis The Whole Duty of Divine Meditation by : Richard Allestree
Download or read book The Whole Duty of Divine Meditation written by Richard Allestree and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Allestree says, “meditation is a serious and solemn considering of heavenly things in the word of God, to the end that Christians may understand how much of God’s word concerns them, and that their hearts may be raised to holy passion and resolution to do what it says every day they live here on earth.” Godly meditation is part of the three legs to the stool of a Christian’s spiritual devotions. Spiritual devotions, or the three spiritual disciplines comprise Bible reading, prayer and pondering the word of God, or what we call godly meditation. This meditation is the musing and mental study of heavenly truths. It is working the practical truths of the Bible into one’s soul. In this, Christians are captivated with God’s disclosure of heavenly truths to them in the bible. In the bible God displays himself to them. God is the infinite First-being, worthy of all love for Himself, and communicates that love to His people. They in turn love him back. Loving him back includes thinking about him. Though Christians live in the world, they have communion with the God of heaven through the word of God, throughout the whole course of their lives. They do this through godly meditation. Allestree not only shows what meditation is, and how it is to be done, but gives the reader twenty-eight meditations so that he can enter into a profitable time of daily meditation by practical example. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Synopsis The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe by : Achiles Tatius
Download or read book The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe written by Achiles Tatius and published by Mint Editions. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe is an ancient Greek romance novel by Achilles Tatius. Considered an important predecessor to the modern novel, The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe has served as a model for such writers as Eusthathius Macrembolites and Alonso Nuñez de Reinoso. The novel remains central to scholarship regarding the tradition of Greek romance novels written within the vast Roman Empire, and has been translated into numerous languages throughout the centuries. Of particular interest is its uncommon usage of first person narration, as well as its employment of ekphrasis and mythological digressions, formulas now commonplace, albeit in varying ways, within modern novel writing. Clitophon is a young man engaged to be married to his half-sister, Calligone. When his distant cousin Leucippe comes to Tyre to visit family, however, Clitophon finds himself hopelessly in love with her. As his wedding day approaches, Clitophon struggles with whether to commit to his vows or follow his wayward heart. Before he can decide, however, a man intending to kidnap Leucippe accidentally takes Calligone to Byzantium instead, where she is forced into marriage with Kallisthenes, her captor. No longer tied to his vows, Clitophon pursues Leucippe, with whom he elopes after a period of rejection from her mother. Sailing from Tyre, they are shipwrecked during a violent storm. Washing up on the coast of Egypt, Clitophon is rescued while Leucippe is captured by a group of bandits who resolve to sacrifice the young maiden. The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe is a story of love at first sight, of trial and error, and the lengths to which lovers will go to live with and for one another. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Achilles Tatius' The Love of Clitophon and Leucippe is a classic of ancient Greek literature reimagined for modern readers.
