Book excerpt: This 496-page publication is a transcription of Stewart County, Tennessee election records for the period 1804-1879. Over 35,000 names of voters and elected officials are included. The primary sources of the transcribed records are original election returns, created in each of the county's 12 civil districts, in a total of 89 local, state and national elections between 1840 and 1879. These returns were prepared and signed by district election Judges and Clerks, showing the names of each voter participating in each election. Additionally, election results from the county's State Militia elections for the period 1804-1840 are included in this book. Election returns are a great complement to census records, as they can document a person's residence in the county between census years. They are also a great complement to tax records, which largely survive for the county: many people who voted in elections are not found in the county's surviving tax records, and for the time period covered by this book, the payment of a poll tax was not a requirement in order to be able to vote in an election. Additionally, election records survive for years in which the county's tax records do not, namely 1813-1826, 1844, 1845 and 1867-1876.

It is the first-ever compilation of early tax lists for the county, and includes 4 tax lists that have survived but have never been microfilmed (1806, 1807, 1839 and 1840). The book contains an every-name index, with over 4,000 names and 100 place names. Tax lists are an excellent alternative to census records, since tax lists were compiled every year, and listed all white males aged 21-50, all landowners and all taxpayers. The earliest census available for Stewart County is 1820, but there are 9 tax lists prior to 1820 that have survived in whole or in part. Tax records can often pinpoint birth years and are an excellent source for proving residency in a county.

A few of the marriage entries from the 1893-1910 period, however, include a permission slip signed by one or both of the bride's parents, since permission was required when the bride was under 16 years of age.The 1893-1910 records also include the name of the groom's bondsman on the marriage bond. Due to the high dollar value on Tennessee marriage bonds - $1,250.00 - the bondsman was often a close friend, neighbor or kinsman of the groom, which can be a helpful genealogical clue.

The missing minutes have been reconstructed by painstaking research at the Stewart County Archives, using Loose Records and Docket Books to reconstruct the activity of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions during the period of record loss. Special items in the 1819-1828 series of minutes include: - The depositions given at the February 1820 term regarding a land dispute at the mouth of Wolf River, where Memphis now stands.
