Book excerpt: Southern California artist Steve Roden is known as more than a painter; his internationally acclaimed, multi-media sound-driven works use musical scores that offer him a set of options to compose a segment of painting, sculpture, or other formal composition. This template results in a startlingly diverse array of images, objects, sounds and spaces. Roden's every artwork, whatever its form, is both familiar yet utterly unexpected. He's an eccentric virtuoso whose paintings look abstract, but only in the way that a chair, a tree, a face or even a Pop-Tart becomes abstract the longer you look at it. This catalog of a 20-year mid-career survey of Roden's work includes an illustrated essay by curator Howard N. Fox and a CD with the four soundtracks from Roden installations.

Book excerpt: Concrete Invention is focused on the development of geometric abstraction in Latin America (Montevideo, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Caracas) throughout the decades of the thirties and seventies in the twentieth century. It includes theoretical essays about the movement, personal reflections by contemporary artists, and a visual section featuring specific themes (geometry, illusion, dialogue, vibration, universalism). It ends with a questionnaire given to well-known theorists about the continuity, value and influence of geometric abstraction in the present. Resembling an artist's book, it includes a fold-out piece by artist José León Cerrillo, which forms a play on words with the publication's title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ear-opening reassessment of sonic art from World War II to the present Marcel Duchamp famously championed a "non-retinal" visual art, rejecting judgments of taste and beauty. In the Blink of an Ear is the first book to ask why the sonic arts did not experience a parallel turn toward a non-cochlear sonic art, imagined as both a response and a complement to Duchamp's conceptualism. Rather than treat sound art as an artistic practice unto itself-or as the unwanted child of music-artist and theorist Seth Kim-Cohen relates the post-War sonic arts to contemporaneous movements in the gallery arts. Applying key ideas from poststructuralism, deconstruction, and art history, In the Blink of an Ear suggests that the sonic arts have been subject to the same cultural pressures that have shaped minimalism, conceptualism, appropriation, and relational aesthetics. Sonic practice and theory have downplayed - or, in many cases, completely rejected - the de-formalization of the artwork and its simultaneous animation in the conceptual realm. Starting in 1948, the simultaneous examples of John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer initiated a sonic theory-in-practice, fusing clement Greenberg's media-specificity with a phenomenological emphasis on perception. Subsequently, the "sound-in-itself" tendency has become the dominant paradigm for the production and reception of sound art. Engaged with critical texts by Jacques Derrida, Rosalind Krauss, Friedrich Kittler, Jean François Lyotard, and Jacques Attali, among others, Seth Kim-Cohen convincingly argues for a reassessment of the short history of sound art, rejecting sound-in-itself in favor of a reading of sound's expanded situation and its uncontainable textuality. At the same time, this important book establishes the principles for a nascent non-cochlear sonic practice, embracing the inevitable interaction of sound with the social, the linguistic, the philosophical, the political, and the technological. Artists discussed include: George Brecht John Cage Janet Cardiff Marcel Duchamp Bob Dylan Valie Export Luc Ferrari Jarrod Fowler Jacob Kirkegaard Alvin Lucier Robert Morris Muddy Waters John Oswald Marina Rosenfeld Pierre Schaeffer Stephen Vitiello La Monte Young

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unprecedented look at the contemporary collective's theatrical art, charting their performances and exploring their social and creative commitments The first monographic publication on the art collective My Barbarian (Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade) offers new insights into the work of this singular group of performers. My Barbarian has used performance to theatricalize social issues, adapting narratives from modern plays, historical texts, and mass media; this volume accompanies a major retrospective celebrating the group's twentieth anniversary. An overview essay relates their work's formal qualities to several historical moments over this span: the club era following September 11, 2001; postcolonial theater after the 2008 financial collapse; and political theater responding to the pressing issues of today. Other contributions read the collective's output through a lens of queer and other critical theory, and contextualize it within the twenty-first-century experimental performance scene. A richly illustrated visual chronology features texts on each of My Barbarian's past works written by the artists. Performances and video works are re-created using stills alongside photos, drawings, scripts, and personal materials drawn from the artists' archives, many never previously published.

Janfamily: Suggestions for Take Overs, their first book, is a manifesto of their philosophy: it is a how-to book, a list of proposals on how to relate to our own environment. By offering solutions to problems such as How to soften a challenge and How not to do what you did yesterday, we are invited to revisit the simple things in life that are often ignored or unnoticed. Janfamily: Suggestion for Take Overs is a humorous yet touching presentation of an innovative way of looking at the world.

Ricky Swallow: The Bricoleur brings together sculpture created since 2004, as well as several groups of watercolours, all which reveal the artist's keen interest in synthesising the mundane and the profound. Renowned for his expertly crafted wooden sculptures that bring to mind the still life tradition, Swallow's work underscores how memory, longing, and the passage of time are distilled within the humble objects of daily life. Swallow (born 1974, San Remo, Victoria, Australia) currently lives and works in Los Angeles, USA.
