Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Hormone Research, Volume IV: Steroidal Activity in Experimental Animals and Man, Part B focuses on protection against irradiation damage, anti-mammary tumor activity, anti-androgens, steroids, and anti-progestational compounds. The selection first offers information on the thermogenic properties of steroids and anabolic steroids, as well as characteristics of steroid pyrogen action in man; species specificity of steroid pyrogen action; clinical significance of thermogenic steroids; and relative activity of anabolic steroids in animals and man. The book also ponders on anti-androgens and anti-progestational compounds. The manuscript examines steroids in reactivated prostatic cancer and tumorigenesis in experimental animals. Discussions focus on treatment and nature of relapse, cooperative study program, mammary and pituitary tumors, testicular interstitial cell tumors, and neoplasms of the female genital tract. The text then elaborates on inhibition of tumor growth by steroids and the effect of corticoids and ACTH on the induction of gastric ulcers in laboratory animals. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in steroidal activity in man and animals.

Book excerpt: Biological Activities of Steroids in Relation to Cancer covers the proceedings of the conference sponsored by the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, and the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The text focuses on the influence of steroids on medical approaches to the cure of cancer, including steroid chemistry, estrogen metabolism, and mammary cancer. The selection first offers information on steroids growth and cancer, advances in steroid chemistry, and the physiology and pharmacology of steroids affecting tumor growth. Discussions focus on rapid development of mammary cancer, pituitary functions, androgens, estrogens, and progestins. The book also ponders on the binding of steroid hormones by plasma proteins; the effects of steroids on the levels of the plasma 17-hydroxycorticosteroids and the serum protein-bound iodine; and the metabolism of dehydroisoandrosterone. The text evaluates studies on estrogen metabolism, biochemical parameters of estrogen action, and enzymatic transport of hydrogen by estrogenic hormones. The manuscript also elaborates on the fate of steroid estrogens in target tissues, effect of steroids on calcium dynamics, and steroids and experimental mammary cancer. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers interested in the use of steroids in treating cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Springer has been publishing an impressive series of textbooks of pharmacology which have set standards in medical science. Surprisingly, an extensive overview of the current state of the art in research on estrogens and anti estrogens was still lacking. The present two volumes on estrogens and anti estrogens provide a comprehensive review of a field of research in which remarkable progress has been made over the past few years. New insights into the mechanisms of steroid hormone action resulted in a tremendous number of pUblications from which new principles of preventive and therapeutic appli cations of estrogens and anti estrogens emerged. Although various electronic data bases provide easy access to this copious information, there was a clear necessity for a monograph-style textbook which assesses and summarizes current knowledge in this rapidly expanding field of research. It should be noted, however, that, due to this dynamic development, it is barely possible to comprehensively update every aspect of basic and clinical knowledge on estro gens and antiestrogens. Thus, the intention of the editors was to provide the reader with an overview of the "classic" and most recently explored areas of research and stimulate future interests in basic and applied endocrinology. Estrogens were among the first steroid hormones described in the scientific literature. Since they were first isolated, since the chemical, synthesic and pharmacological characterization of naturally occurring estrogens and, later on, of orally active derivatives, estrogen research has produced continu ously hallmark results in reproductive endocrinology worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of drugs in food animal production has resulted in benefits throughout the food industry; however, their use has also raised public health safety concerns. The Use of Drugs in Food Animals provides an overview of why and how drugs are used in the major food-producing animal industriesâ€"poultry, dairy, beef, swine, and aquaculture. The volume discusses the prevalence of human pathogens in foods of animal origin. It also addresses the transfer of resistance in animal microbes to human pathogens and the resulting risk of human disease. The committee offers analysis and insight into these areas: Monitoring of drug residues. The book provides a brief overview of how the FDA and USDA monitor drug residues in foods of animal origin and describes quality assurance programs initiated by the poultry, dairy, beef, and swine industries. Antibiotic resistance. The committee reports what is known about this controversial problem and its potential effect on human health. The volume also looks at how drug use may be minimized with new approaches in genetics, nutrition, and animal management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the United States Food and Drug Administration's most difficult tasks is the assessment of risk-benefit ratios for a broad spectrum of therapeutic and prophylactic drugs. Furthermore, it is now widely recog nized that no drug, chemical or even natural substance is completely devoid of risk. Nowhere has this issue been the subject of more controversy than with steroidal contraceptive drugs. Regulated as a special class of products because of their prophylactic use in healthy individuals for prevention of pregnancy rather than for treatment of disease, steroid contraceptives drugs undergo more extensive animal safety tests than any other pharmaceutical agent. This view also contemplates the availability of alternative contraceptive measures posing fewer risks, but the use of less effective methods must take into consideration the hazards associated with pregnancy itself. In April 1983, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Insti tutes of Health in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Population Council, and the Agency for International Development sponsored a three-day workshop to evaluate current guidelines for preclinical safety studies of contraceptive drugs in light of our extensive knowledge of the side effects of marketed products. The meeting included presenta tions by experts in the fields of comparative metabolism, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, carcinogenicity, toxicology, coagulation, lipid metabolism, epidemiology and pathology at a meeting of the Fertility and Maternal Health Drugs Advisory Committee of the National Center for Drugs and Biologics, Food and Drug Administration.

Book excerpt: Newer Methods of Nutritional Biochemistry: With Applications and Interpretations, Volume I, provides graduate biochemistry students and medical scientists with a compilation of biochemical procedures which have extensive applications in nutrition research. To this end, several approaches to further exploration of protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism and the interrelationship with enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are covered in some detail. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book discusses proteins and amino acids; utilization of dietary proteins; intestinal absorption; diet and tissue enzymes; and rates and the kinetics of enzyme formation and destruction in the living animal. It considers vitamins B1, B2, B6, niacin, and ascorbic acid; vitamin B12 and intrinsic factor; carbohydrates; fats, fatty acids, and sterols; minerals; and biostatistical methods for nutritional and metabolic investigations.
