Book Synopsis Brain Mechanisms and Spatial Vision by : D.J. Ingle
Download or read book Brain Mechanisms and Spatial Vision written by D.J. Ingle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984-12-31 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains chapters derived from a N. A. T. O. Advanced Study Institute held in June 1983. As the director of this A. S. I. it was my hope that some of the e1ectrophysiologists could express the potentialities of their work for perceptual theory, and that some perceptionists could speculate on the underlying "units" of perception in a way that would engage the imagination of physio logists. The reader will have to be the judge of whether this was achieved, or whether such a psychophysiological inter1ingua is still overly idealistic. It is clear that after the revolution prec~pitated by Hube1 and Weisel in understanding of visual cortical neurons we still have only a foggy idea of the behavioral output of any particular species of cortical detector. It was therefore particularly unfortunate that two persons who have made great strides in correlating interesting facets of cat cortical physio logy with human psychophysics (Max Cynader and Martin Regan of Dalhousie University) were unable to attend this meeting. Never theless, a number of new and challenging ideas regarding both spatial perception and cortical mechanisms are represented in this volume, and it is hoped that the reader will remember not only the individual demonstrations but the critical questions posed by the apposition of the two different collections of experimental facts. Book Synopsis Early Visual Development, Normal and Abnormal by : Kurt Simons
Download or read book Early Visual Development, Normal and Abnormal written by Kurt Simons and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, there has been great expansion of our understanding of the development of vision in early life. New techniques and technologies have provided unprecedented insights into the function of all the components of the visual system--optical, motor and neural--during this formative period. These insights have come from neurophysiological studies of animal models, electrophysiological and psychophysical studies of infants and young children, and clinical and other studies of such abnormal developmental conditions as amblyopia ("lazy eye"), nystagmus and prematurity. Despite this broadened scope of study of early visual development, there has never been a comprehensive single text or reference work definitively reviewing the entire field. This important work provides such an overview. Prepared under the auspices of the Committee on Vision of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council, its in-depth chapters are written by world authorities. Equally useful to the student or clinician looking for a convenient introduction to the field and to the researcher in seeking explicit detail, this book provides a new degree of integration of this diverse field.
Book Synopsis Binocular Vision and Stereopsis by : Ian P. Howard
Download or read book Binocular Vision and Stereopsis written by Ian P. Howard and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive survey of binocular vision, with an emphasis on its role in the perception of a three-dimensional world. The central theme is biological vision. Machine vision and computational models are discussed where they contribute to an understanding of living systems.
Book Synopsis Visual Perception and Cognition in infancy by : Carl Granrud
Download or read book Visual Perception and Cognition in infancy written by Carl Granrud and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are based on papers presented at the 23rd Carnegie Mellon Symposia on Cognition. At this exciting event, speaker after speaker presented new discoveries about infants' visual perception in areas ranging from sensory processes to visual cognition. The field continues to make significant progress in understanding the infant's perceptual world. Several advances have come from the development of new methods for exploring infant perception and cognition that have brought new empirical findings. Advances have also been made in understanding the mechanisms underlying perceptual development. Outstanding examples of this ongoing progress can be seen in the chapters of this volume.

Book Synopsis Development of Perception in Infancy by : Martha E. Arterberry
Download or read book Development of Perception in Infancy written by Martha E. Arterberry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developing infant can accomplish all important perceptual tasks that an adult can, albeit with less skill or precision. Through infant perception research, infant responses to experiences enable researchers to reveal perceptual competence, test hypotheses about processes, and infer neural mechanisms, and researchers are able to address age-old questions about perception and the origins of knowledge. In Development of Perception in Infancy: The Cradle of Knowledge Revisited, Martha E. Arterberry and Philip J. Kellman study the methods and data of scientific research on infant perception, introducing and analyzing topics (such as space, pattern, object, and motion perception) through philosophical, theoretical, and historical contexts. Infant perception research is placed in a philosophical context by addressing the abilities with which humans appear to be born, those that appear to emerge due to experience, and the interaction of the two. The theoretical perspective is informed by the ecological tradition, and from such a perspective the authors focus on the information available for perception, when it is used by the developing infant, the fit between infant capabilities and environmental demands, and the role of perceptual learning. Since the original publication of this book in 1998 (MIT), Arterberry and Kellman address in addition the mechanisms of change, placing the basic capacities of infants at different ages and exploring what it is that infants do with this information. Significantly, the authors feature the perceptual underpinnings of social and cognitive development, and consider two examples of atypical development - congenital cataracts and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Professionals and students alike will find this book a critical resource to understanding perception, cognitive development, social development, infancy, and developmental cognitive neuroscience, as research on the origins of perception has changed forever our conceptions of how human mental life begins.

Download or read book Fixing My Gaze written by Susan R. Barry and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the brain's capacity for change When neuroscientist Susan Barry was fifty years old, she experienced the sense of immersion in a three dimensional world for the first time. Skyscrapers on street corners appeared to loom out toward her like the bows of giant ships. Tree branches projected upward and outward, enclosing and commanding palpable volumes of space. Leaves created intricate mosaics in 3D. Barry had been cross-eyed and stereoblind since early infancy. After half a century of perceiving her surroundings as flat and compressed, on that day she saw the city of Manhattan in stereo depth for first time in her life. As a neuroscientist, she understood just how extraordinary this transformation was, not only for herself but for the scientific understanding of the human brain. Scientists have long believed that the brain is malleable only during a "critical period" in early childhood. According to this theory, Barry's brain had organized itself when she was a baby to avoid double vision - and there was no way to rewire it as an adult. But Barry found an optometrist who prescribed a little-known program of vision therapy; after intensive training, Barry was ultimately able to accomplish what other scientists and even she herself had once considered impossible. Dubbed "Stereo Sue" by renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, Susan Barry tells her own remarkable journey and celebrates the joyous pleasure of our senses.
